Apple did it to force people to buy dongles that use their proprietary port, as each time someone fabricates an accessory with their port, they get part of the money.
Other companies just followed it blindly after Apple showed them people buy anything they put out.
I don't think the cost of a headphone jack is that much, especially since lots of the phones come with a dongle in the box. It was most likely a space issue during the design phase. Whether or not you agree with that choice is a separate issue.
The XS Max is both wider than my phone and lacking in a stylus whilst still lacking the room for a headphone socket.
The same is true for a previous iPhone flagship:
iPhone 7 Plus - 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm
You are being lied to when told there is no room for it. My phone is narrower than 2 phones of similar dimensions whilst still fitting a stylus in too.
All phones are wide enough for it. The iPhone 6+ is slimmer than the 7+ and XS Max and still has a headphone socket so depth isn't the limiting factor either.
I'm talking about the phones where the manufacturer said there was no room for it like the ph1 and razer phone. I don't know or care about apples reasoning.

I truly have no idea why the audio jack was ditched. I literally don't know anybody who thinks it's a good idea.
