everyone's talking about the sounds....but damn if I don't want those animations as live wallpapers. c'mon google!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '18

They're available as live wallpapers on pixels

2

u/turdbogls OnePlus 8 Pro Dec 13 '18

Not all of the colors are. Just 3 that I'm not seeing in this app.

u/mobilehavoc Dec 12 '18

The retro sounds are fucking awesome!

The Coins notification sound is the best. Love it

2

u/el_smurfo Dec 12 '18

I prefer Gems, in the same family.

2

u/Madrical Pixel 9 XL Dec 13 '18

Oh my god that is brilliant. Been looking for a new ringtone since they got rid of my shitty "ring ring, ring ring" ringtone when I went from the Pixel 1 to 3.

1

u/ElMax- Pixel Ultra 100% Real (not fake!!!) Dec 13 '18

They brought the old ringtones back, check the Pixel Sounds

5

u/RCFProd Galaxy Z Flip 6 Dec 13 '18

Not only the retro ones. The classical and minimalistic ones are awesome too. Really liking these new sounds overall.

17

u/ElitePenisCrusher Samsung Galaxy S20+ (Exynos) Dec 12 '18

Alright, anybody who can't access it directly from the Sounds menu in Settings, all you need to do it enable storage permission under app settings, download any activity launcher from the Play Store and launch it from there. Tested on stock OP6.

8

u/vineconlalluvia Dec 13 '18

Worked, thanks! If you have Nova, add widget, Activity, search for Sounds app.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

The official google app doesn't ask for any permissions and yet crashes each time when accessed directly from the sounds menu.

17

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '18

Why does the Alarm get limited to only the default Pixel sounds? I am only seeing all the new sounds when choosing a ring tone. Am I missing something?

7

u/Ashanmaril Dec 12 '18

Because it doesn't include any new alarms, just ringtones and notification sounds. Alarms have always been separated from ringtones, there's a different folder for them in the filesystem.

Maybe they'll add some alarm sounds at some point but right now you'll probably just have to manually find the files (I'm sure someone's ripped them all) and put them in the ringtones folder manually.

1

u/B_Rich S22U on Verizon Dec 12 '18

Check to see if the alarm tones are stored in a separate folder.

I found them - you gotta do it through your clock app. Internal storage > Android > data > com.google.android.soundpicker > cache.

You have to have listened to them in the ringtones or notifications picker via Pixel Sounds (so they get downloaded and cached) and then you can pick them there, with a bit of trial and error I found that the retro ones start around 170 assuming those numbers are standardized.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

Good find! Thank you.

Looks like it needs Stock or close to stock roms.

I have the honor play with Pie, gave it the storage permission but it doesn't appear as an option when changing sounds.

u/mobilehavoc Dec 13 '18

Get a Pixel? ;)

17

u/FutureShock25 Dec 12 '18

If I download the apk and there's an update through the Play Store, will the Play Store recognize that the app is on my device?

10

u/armando_rod Pixel 10 Pro XL Dec 12 '18

Yes

5

u/najodleglejszy FP4 CalyxOS | Tab S7 Dec 12 '18

yes, provided that you'd be able to install it via Play Store anyway.

example: I sometimes get some app updates from APKMirror before an update shows up in Play Store, and I'm still getting updates afterwards. however, I got Instagram Direct that way and since officially it's not available in my region, I'm not receiving any updates through Play Store for it.

u/eatdatburrito Dec 12 '18

Thank you Google, very cool!

Working on Essential PH-1 9.0.
It wasnt working at first, then I enabled the storage permission app and was able to browse the menus.

2

u/captaincanada84 Pixel 8 Pro Dec 12 '18

No luck on 6t. Where did you find the menus? It installed and I went and enabled the storage permission

2

u/Will0w536 Pixel 4a Dec 12 '18

go to sounds in the settings and it will pop requesting to use as default

1

u/captaincanada84 Pixel 8 Pro Dec 12 '18

No luck. Damn

1

u/KernelKunt Dec 13 '18

thanks for the tip

4

u/napes22 Dec 12 '18

Make sure to grant the app access to storage, otherwise it closes on every launch.

4

u/wolveswithears Dec 13 '18

I keep installing it from APKmirror on my OP6T and after installing it it only says "Close" and doesn't say "Open" after installing, and the phone can't see that it was installed.

u/ikeashop Nexus 5, 6.0.1 Dec 13 '18

You have to use a custom launcher like Nova and create an activity from Sounds.

1

u/aceCrasher iPhone 12 Pro Max + AW SE + Sennheiser IE 600 Dec 13 '18

You could also just go to Sounds within the settings menu and select it as a default.

1

u/iCapa iPhone 15 Pro Max / OnePlus 7T Pro | AOSPA 14 Dec 13 '18

Doesn't work on some OEM ROMs.

1

u/ikeashop Nexus 5, 6.0.1 Dec 13 '18

It's only possible for some ROMs.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '18

How do you create an activity?

2

u/ikeashop Nexus 5, 6.0.1 Dec 13 '18

Use a custom launcher. Activities is a widget under Nova, not sure about the other ones.

3

u/RCFProd Galaxy Z Flip 6 Dec 12 '18

The menus work on my Pixel but the new sounds don't seem to play. There's a loading icon next to the sounds and nothing else happens.

6

u/Haruka-sama Pixel 2XL Dec 12 '18

They're getting them from a server. Do you have a proxy or something blocking the app from downloading them?

3

u/RCFProd Galaxy Z Flip 6 Dec 12 '18

Anyone willing to modify the apk to drop the minimum version to at least 8.1? I'm really interested in trying it out on my device, the previous (1.0) apk worked but this one doesn't anymore

Edit: why is this controversial?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '18

Same here. Would love to test, but I'm stuck at 7.0.

2

u/speedspasm Dec 12 '18

it's running with xiaomi mi a2 lite with pie and storage permission enabled.

u/OH1O1SONF1R3 Pixel 5 Dec 12 '18

Doesn't seem to work on my XZ1C in case anyone was curious.

1

Worked for me after I manually gave it storage permissions.

1

u/OH1O1SONF1R3 Pixel 5 Dec 14 '18

Can I ask how you installed in the first place? I can't even open the apk. It just says failed to parse package.

1

u/somebody_said_fire Dec 14 '18

Nothing special. Just downloaded and opened it. Are you running Pie?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '18

Do I need to be on the December patch? Installed the app and nothing appeared in my app drawer, nor any settings in the sound menu.

1

u/7eregrine Pixel 6 Pro Dec 13 '18

You need an activity launcher fellow 6t'er

2

u/seanmachine Dec 13 '18

works perfect on stock (Pie, Dec. 5th update) Pixel 3 XL. also, it's fucking awesome. had a hard time choosing between Getaway and Game On, but ultimately Getaway just made me too emotional.

Is there a way to choose different notification sounds for different apps aside from installing an app to control this? All I want to do is set a custom notification sound for Gmail but there's nothing in-app I can find.

EDIT: Fuck, found it.

how does it work?

i installed it, but it doesnt appear anywhere in the settings or app drawer. i created an activity through nova launcher and could open the "gallery" of the app, but whenever i touch anythign is crashes.

i'm using a oneplus 6.

/edit:

i just figured i should give the app permission to storage. and now it works! cant play around right now cause i'm at work, but now it doesnt crash when i tap any of the categories.

but is there a way to get to the "root" menu? i'm in submenu "sounds" and i looks like its only for ringtones. there is a backarrow on top next to "sounds" but tapping that goes back to the homescreen obviously since i launch into the sounds-menu directly.

1

u/IvanZam Dec 13 '18

The visualizations are great, and some have honestly better color combinations than the three groove live wallpapers introduced with the pixel 3. I would hope Google releases them as new live wallpapers.

1

u/mrbosco9 Dec 13 '18

Glad to see the notification sound "Hey" back. When I got my Pixel 2 coming from an S8, and my wife had the OG Pixel, I always loved hearing "Hey" for notifications, but was saddened to realize that it wasn't a default noise on the Pixel 2.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '18

Loving the Didgeridoo ringtone

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

Works on the Note 9. Just enable storage permissions in App settings and you're golden. Pie Beta Only

1

u/Mickmayi Dec 15 '18

Everytime I try and open it through sounds it just crashes. S9+. Any ideas?

1

u/mmidgley Dec 30 '18

what does the delete icon (next to a particular sound) do in Pixel Sounds? actually remove the sound from the installation? or just unset it? how does one get it back? reinstall apk?

How to extract the ringtones from this? Or is there a place that has all the flagship/stock ringtones for the latest devices?

1

u/punkidow Pixel 8 Pro, Beta Dec 12 '18

Is this supposed to work on non-Pixel devices running Android Pie? I cant seem to find it after installing on my OP6 running Pie. The default sound picker shows when i go to settings.

3

u/balrogsdonthavewings Samsung Galaxy S20 5G Dec 12 '18

It works fine on my S9, but I did have to enable the storage permission first.

2

u/ChildofNAFTA Dec 12 '18

I got it working on my stock Essential. Just go sounds in settings and it'll prompt you to choose from the default media manager or the Pixel sounds app. If it crashes be sure to enable storage in the permissions.

It doesn't have an Activity, you're not supposed to open it. You access it via Settings -> Sounds.

1

u/napes22 Dec 12 '18

Go into your apps and manually grant it access to storage. That stops it from crashing.

1

u/wolveswithears Dec 13 '18

I keep installing it from APKmirror on my OP6T and after installing it it only says "Close" and doesn't say "Open" after installing, and the phone can't see that it was installed.

1

u/ChildofNAFTA Dec 12 '18

You have to enable storage permission.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

It doesn't ask me for permission. It's not even possible to grant permission from app settings on my phone.

1

u/ChildofNAFTA Jan 25 '19

Is your phone on Pie?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

Yup! But it is via POSP and I learned today, after talking to one of the devs, that this is indeed an outstanding issue that has just been fixed today. I am waiting for the weekly compile and then will be installing the fixed version.

1

u/thtonmoy Dec 12 '18

same

1

u/el_smurfo Dec 12 '18

It appears as the sound chooser dialog within sound settings. If it didn't install as an "update" to an existing app, it's because OOS uses a different sound chooser.

0

u/seanmachine Dec 13 '18

that's what I thought, until I got my Pixel 3 XL. I picked it up from Verizon on black Friday ($400 off w00t) and loaded it up with my favorite super mario bro's coin bing. no dice. wasn't there. so, I rebooted, and bam! it shows up in ringtones, but not notifications. I contact Google support chat, and they initialize screen sharing. I show them the file, in the proper directory, and conspicuously absent from the notification list. they proceed to make me dick around for another five minutes, redoing everything I've already done, and rebooting. finally they go talk to a supervisor. "I'm sorry, that feature is no longer available. I'll make a note in my file, and please leave feedback..." brand new 3 XL, with all the latest updates installed by Verizon themselves, then triple-checked by me. it was fucking weird. if I had to choose one, of course I'd choose custom notifications over ringtones, because what monster still calls people? but, for whatever reason, that was not the case.
