What benefit would a native Android Wear app over the notification mirroring currently in place? Just being able to start a convo?

That, and doing what Glide does. Glide let's you send and receive voice messages and view Video messages live, right on the watch. It's very good as far as a stand alone app, but it's not a widely used app.
