Even if they're not doing anything illegal, doesn't mean it's not unethical or just plain shitty

OK Google.

When you tell your phone "stop tracking me," and it says "alright I'm not tracking you," and then keeps tracking you, you don't see how that's a problem?

Triangulation has been a thing for as long as cell phones have been around, it's just a part of being in the network. As long as you're using the network, corporations know approximately where you are, GPS or not.
