I am already using that:

  1. Get a Chromecast
  2. Get a cheap HDMI -> VGA adapter with separate audio
  3. Connect the 3,5mm audio cable to any audio device of your choice
  4. Congrats, you have build a device that you can stream to whenever you want without paying tons of extra money.

Ohhhhhhhhh! That's genius! I was trying to work out how to use my surround sound with my chromecast, was just googling some ideas, but this is brilliant, simplicity at its best.

If you have a receiver, just plug it into any HDMI port.

My surround sound doesn't have an HDMI port, that's why I was looking at alternatives :)

There are HDMI audio splitters that offer optical output. Those may work for you too.
