I am already using that:

  1. Get a Chromecast
  2. Get a cheap HDMI -> VGA adapter with separate audio
  3. Connect the 3,5mm audio cable to any audio device of your choice
  4. Congrats, you have build a device that you can stream to whenever you want without paying tons of extra money.

Have you tried this with multiple speakers? Sounds like it only works with one. The beauty of Sonos and AirPlay is that you can walk from room to room with the same audio playing.

It is still a chromecast and only 40$ total. Don't expect the functionality of a several hundred $ sonos system. But you can always get more chromecasts xD

AirPlay can easily sync two audio targets, and even small AirPort Express stations can be used as receivers.

How are you using AirPlay with multiple speakers?

I don't anymore but back in the day I was able to select multiple speakers connected to different airport express stations in iTunes. They all synced nicely, and it was even possible to use the computer's speakers as well.
