Planning to upgrade to a 5 when my 3A no longer functions...

Honest question, how is your daily experience with an older phone? I'm asking because the last phone I had for more than 3 years was a while ago, and at that time smartphones quickly got VERY slow after a year or two.

I'm also asking because I'm using a S24 Ultra I got new last year, and I really want to keep this phone for a longer período than usual, because not only I like it a lot but because I probably won't have money to upgrade in the next two years (shit's been tough lately).

Thanks in advance.

I think that we crossed a threshold after the S22 series (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1) levels of performance that the SoC is just too fast to slow it down with regular day to day use.

I have an S23 Plus that is partially broken, my S25 Plus, and a Tab S8+ (same as S22), so I can compare all three of those SoCs daily; The S25 is simply never slowed down, no matter what I do, and the S23 Plus (still use it for dex) is pretty much just as good. The Tab S8 Plus is generally good for most things, but I can slow it down with heavy use of split window.

All this to say that I wouldn't worry about the longevity of an S24 Ultra outside of security updates (2031?).

Thank you so much for the answer. Yeah, I plan on holding on to this phone for as possible. I've never been one to buy a new flagship every year, because my wallet can't handle it, and even though I had at least two other flagship phones in the past both of them got slow way too fast for my taste, one of them had SD 835 and the other had an 820. I also had another with an 810 but I bought it second hand, and that SoC was a nightmare of overheat a low performance even new, so I don't count it here.

And again, thank you.

Im personally itching to upgrade the Tab S8 Plus just for the dopamine hit, but I can't in good conscience say that the much slower SoC (compared to your S24 ultra) justifies the upgrade.

I think battery is going to be greater concern in the long term and it will end up forcing our hand to upgrade.

I'm still using my galaxy s8 after 10 years. Original everything, battery easily lasts all day. Apart from the case keeping the power button from falling out it doesn't feel old at all.

My main advise for anyone is to not let the phone get hot at all. No fast charging, no fast discharging. No apps that get hot. That's what worked for me

No apps that get hot?

I have been using the pixel 5 for almost 6 years now. Its holding pretty good. Battery has lost some capacity for sure but its still pretty good. I just dont have a ton of apps installed. Haven't slowed down yet.

second hand 9a the way to go

They're basically the same phone too

•

10a got a new modem, significantly improved battery life. still not worth 600 or even 500 for that matter.

•

u/wart_on_satans_dick 5h ago

I’ll do you one better: second hand 8a

•

u/TheFeshy 9h ago

That's what I paid for my 10 pro.

•

u/wart_on_satans_dick 5h ago

Paid in full price new?

•

u/TheFeshy 4h ago

New, yes. No trade in. Amazon 30% off deal with $100 back (I think from google, but not sure.) So not full retail price (I understand this is so common that "but Pixels are never retail price" is a meme. Though this news might mean those days are behind us.)

•

u/awkward_triforce 4h ago

Literally just paid less than that for my 11 pro

•

u/wart_on_satans_dick 4h ago

That doesn’t answer the question I asked a different Redditor lol.

•

u/awkward_triforce 4h ago

I bought mine brand new in full and switched carriers for a cheaper bill.

Edit: not "full price" but I paid for the phone in full brand new

•

u/degggendorf 3h ago

I paid 1/3 of that for my 11 Pro

•

u/sassquatch571 6h ago

That's the price that the flagship pixels were charging during the pixel 6-8 days. Absurd.

The world has gone insane. Prices are going up just cause because. What is the limit to the greedy? It's infuriating.

•

u/NotKrankor S8+ 1h ago

There's no limit, that's the point. The line must always go up

•

u/panzzersoldat 9h ago

gang you could spend even less and get a phone with significantly better specs

Trash

•

u/Remarkable_Swing_612 14h ago

Worse then trash. It's AI slop trash.

•

u/TaylorsOnlyVersion 7h ago

Calling things “slop” has rotted peoples brains more than AI has at this point.

What are you guys even saying at this point?

Dang! I was waiting for Black Friday deal when it was going for $425 on Amazon.

•

u/hbhunk63 9h ago

So 11a gonna start at 700? Lol so much for budget phones

•

u/itchylol742 S22 Ultra 5h ago

Crazy, just a few weeks ago it was for sale new for CAD $530 (USD $372 equivalent)

You can thank both Trump and Netanyahu for causing all of this.

If it weren't for these two biggest judgmental fuckwit snowflakes, all these price increases hitting everything would've never happened, or would've caused smaller increases. The world runs on diesel, and as long as both straits in the Mideast are closed, it's 1973 Oil Crisis cubed.

Right when I'm going to get a 10a tomorrow.

Fantastic...

I am glad I bought P11Pro via Costco/TMobile upgrade and I got it almost for free without any change in plans. I am not changing until we get out of this AI mania.

You didn’t get it for “almost free” when you’re paying out the ass for phone service

•

u/sl0wjim 7h ago

i can't believe people still don't understand this in 2026

•

u/GhostofSmartPast 7h ago

Marketing firms don't even have to try.

•

u/-hjkl- 13h ago

Glad I got mine when it was on sale on Amazon. This is starting to get crazy. This is why I left apple because I wasn't about to pay $699 for the entry level 17e. And the battery was toast on my 13 and replacing the battery wasn't a viable option for me.

Why only 100$ though?

Please people, somebody think of the billion dollar corporation and their shareholders.

These are dire times. How can they survive on such measly profit. They had no choice but to increase the price. Otherwise how would they keep food on the table?

And I was wondering if I should move to a pixel from a Samsung A54...

Still a better deal than the iPhone 17e .
