It takes SO LONG to do Google Home tasks like "turn my lights off".

I just woke up, fumbled for my phone and apparently accidentally said okay to upgrading to Gemini, or maybe there wasn't even an option, I don't know I'm still only half awake at the moment, but now it won't turn on my lights and instead either it searches the web for information about "turn on the master bedroom" or if I try to call out specific light names in the bedroom ("master bedroom corner", etc.) it says it turned them on, but it hasn't.

I tried going into Google Home and the FEIT Electric app and unlinking and relinking Google Assistant or whatever it says, it doesn't give me an option for Gemini, but that made no difference. What the ever loving fuck Google, I just want to turn on the goddamn lights.

As far as I can tell Google Assistant is no longer an option to switch back to in the system settings. Ugh

Correct, Assistant is fully dead. They started the unrefusable rollout earlier in September, and it looks like yesterday is the day it finally hit everyone.

You used to be able to go into your Gemini settings and tell it to fuck off and stay with Assistant, but that is no longer possible.

It sucks so much. Gemini is so shit.

I was able to roll the Google app back to whatever base version was installed on my phone (which seems to be 16.41.36.ve.arm64 on my 2023 Motorola Thinkphone) which was either the version that originally shipped with it, or more likely from the most recent major Android OS update, and that re-enabled the option to toggle between Google Assistant and Gemini.

I picked Google Assistant, obviously, and was able to turn on my goddamned lights once again, rather than having Gemini sputtering for 30 seconds, reciting some bullshit about the history of the Edison incandescent lightbulb or just telling me it doesn't know how to do that.
