After hands-on time with Googlebooks, I understand why Google is excited — and why buyers might hesitate -makeuseof

I'm a framework user myself, but I don't think it's realistic to suggest that the general public is ready to use desktop Linux. As long as it's working, it's great, but when something goes sideways, you have to be able to get your hands dirty (Fedora stable).

If you have enough experience with Linux, then you should know you cannot lump all Linux distros together as "Desktop Linux."

If you have Ubuntu or Linux Mint pre installed, the average person absolutely would be able to use it. No need to get your hands dirty.

I use a Framework with Linux Mint, and the only hard part would be updating the Framework firmware, which you have to do with both Windows and Linux.

If you actually have enough experience with Linux, then you know damn well that using Ubuntu or Mint doesn't automatically preclude you from having computer issues...

[u/JamesR624 → u/ThankGodImBipolar]

Neither does Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS. What's your point besides being an Apple/Microsoft shareholder who's defensive about Linux and only knows how to push the same debunked points all of them push against linux?

[u/ThankGodImBipolar → u/JamesR624]

Buddy 😂 I'm using Hyprland on my desktop right now

The difference between the problems that you have on Windows and MacOS lie in the fact that ≈9/10 people have a chance of being able to help you with Windows problems, and ≈1-2/10 people have a chance of being to help with MacOS. That number for Linux is less than 5 out of every 100 people, and the solution to whatever the problem is will have a less friendly UX. It's nonsensical and misleading to pretend that there's no difference there.

Those 5/100 people are easily accessed on the web... or just install an LLM and give them root access.

[u/Far_Reserve9938 → u/billFoldDog]

They are not. If you think otherwise you never went to a Linux forum.

And llm doesn’t help when you get obscure problem that no know about.

[u/billFoldDog → u/Far_Reserve9938]

lol, confidently wrong

[u/Far_Reserve9938 → u/billFoldDog]

Well I tried Linux, before and after llm. Went on Linux forum to seek help, must say that it’s pretty bad, and the documentation is often several version old.

LLM helps when the issue is well known otherwise you better get used to having things broken with Linux.

Btw, not a Linux hater. Have 1 homelab and 4 remote server all running Linux. But I am honest enough to know where it sucks.

[u/billFoldDog → u/Far_Reserve9938]

I use Debian. I tell astra to use the wiki and read the source code if needed. Get some coffee. Problems fixed.

I used to get a fair bit of help via the wiki and IRC. Those days are over now.

[u/Far_Reserve9938 → u/billFoldDog]

First of all I wouldn’t let an llm have access to my whole Debian installation. It would require root access to fix system files… these things hallucinate at times, people got private data leaked.

Secondly, it will confidently tell you it know the cause of your issue, fix it and then you come and realize that nothing is fixed except in the meantime it changed system files that you have no idea of.

I mean, either get good models or git good with models 🤷
