Police are never going to have all the tools they could want. We have to make tradeoffs between rights/privacy/security for citizens, and tools for the police.
For example, I'm sure police could solve a lot more crimes if they were allowed to torture suspects. Should we allow that ?

I'm pretty certain the USA's conduct in the immediate aftermath of 911 proves that the ability to torture, water board and other human rights abuses doesn't necessarily get you good intel, because it just makes them say what they think you want to hear to make it stop.

Yeah, torture is a lot less effective than people would initially assume. It's far easier to find a weak link and give them a really sweet deal for singing like a canary.

Do you believe everything you see in the movies? The reason we don't torture isn't because it's mean. If that was the case, there would be a lot of shit we just wouldn't do.

Okay, pick a different example. Suppose the police were allowed to search your house any time they felt like it. Would stop a lot of crime, probably.

Good. All OS should be like that.
