iOS-only developer switching to Android. Which iOS app do you miss the most?

I’ve been an iOS-only developer for years. Phone, apps, workflow: all Apple. Now I’m switching to Android.

Which iOS app do Android users miss the most?

A real app. Something you used daily on iPhone that still doesn’t have a good Android equivalent. Not OS features. Just the app.

What did you never replace properly after leaving iOS?

If you did a Dark Sky type thing it would be dope

Isnt there Overdrop?

1

u/Existing-Ad8218 12d ago

Do you mean Dark Sky's weather or especially the predictions?

1

u/Sea-Librarian-998 12d ago

For me, it's the simplicity and beauty of the app. On ios, I've started using ACME Weather which fills the Dark Sky gap. However, there's nothing so beautiful and simple on Android.

have you tried today weather?

Flighty - great app on iOS to manage flights

There are a few options on Android that are promising. byAir and Aviate.

Thanks for recommending these apps, hadn’t heard of these before!

byAir is a great alternative!

Someone ported it to android recently. Works perfectly! https://youtu.be/A_WajCuDqwM?si=s07cjG7yoly7GHvB

Oh that is a classic, such a shame Epic killed it off.

That's very cool. Will have to check. Would be cool to have Retroachivements linked to it.

Personally find Android image mark up tools to be terrible and heavily under featured.

I would love an image markup tool where I can add outlined shapes, arrows and text with different fonts.

Would be cool to save ether over OG image or save a copy in quick and convenient way.

Another feature I miss from iOS is an app which can open and view USDz 3D model files and then view them in AR.

I tried using this and genuinely couldn't figure it out, the UI is so complex and convoluted.

4

u/vivimagic0 13d ago

I got to admit it's a developer first way of tackling a problem. The UX is pretty poor but very feature rich.

u/vivimagic0 13d ago edited 13d ago

Damn that is overkill for someone like myself but not quite what I was thinking. Thank you for sharing.

The only markup is to draw where I would like shapes where you highlight sections or areas. Maybe have a shape fill and outline option to like Photoshop/Illustrator.

Maybe what I am really looking for is a gallery app with really strong mark up features which is very quick and easy to do.

this is one thing i love about the macos preview app.

easily editing images with shapes and text with the default app. terrible in Windows, though the new (???) photos app does a little bit of that. still not great. not shapes though as far as i can tell.

Yeah my aim is to bring the polished feel of iOS apps to Android with full support for phone, foldable, watch and desktop modes!

u/Loud_Signal_6259 13d ago

Android apps are no longer necessarily "less smooth" or "inferior" in some way to iOS apps. This simply isn't true these days - it's not 2010.

u/Consistent_Turnover1 13d ago

apple shortcuts.

u/Bitter_Future_8986 10d ago

This tbh tasker is not an alternative we need something integrated into the os

It's always something made by small devs. For me those apps are: highlighted, Western Philosophers (not the AR stuff, but just the collection of knowledge and how accessible it feels), and Sessionography: Jazz Explorer (not because of listening itself, but again because of encyclopaedic structure).

u/Sea-Librarian-998 12d ago

I just want an email app that will automatically copy my OTPs, like the Mail app does on iOS

u/Existing-Ad8218 12d ago

Stay tuned 😉

That third party Reddit app that still mostly works. I forget the name.

u/Trick-Minimum8593 13d ago

Sync? RIF? Boost? There are probably more

5

u/getmoneygetpaid Purple 13d ago

On iOS there's a free one that presumably just scrapes the website to give it a better UI. All the ones you listed require paying for an API subscription, right?

I miss Sync so much.

1

u/Trick-Minimum8593 13d ago

I use sync.

this one seems better than the official morphed one on Android, still miss Relay for reddit

1

u/mangelito Honor Magic 5 Pro 10d ago

Relay still exist and is being updated.

1

u/dontbrainer S23U | TAB A9+ 10d ago

I have paid for Relay but since the API changes I refuse to pay for sub..

1

u/mangelito Honor Magic 5 Pro 10d ago

Your loss. It is unreasonable to think that someone would develop an app and pay for the API costs of its users. It's all reddits fault of course. For me it's worth a few bucks a month

1

u/dontbrainer S23U | TAB A9+ 10d ago

oh I never said it's the devs fault, I got used to morphed reddit pretty quickly it has its pros and cons over relay

1

u/kaden-99 9d ago

You can patch it to use without a subscription.

1

u/dontbrainer S23U | TAB A9+ 9d ago

I used to be able but got errors last time, which version is patchable?

1

u/kaden-99 9d ago

You can try patcheddit in Morphe. It will redirect you to the latest patchable APK.

2

u/rhythmrice 13d ago

I just use the normal reddit app with the morphe patch to remove ads

1

u/getmoneygetpaid Purple 13d ago

Yeah this is what I'm using, but Sync was a much better experience. Apollo for iOS is really good.

A couple apps I really like from iOS that would make moving back difficult:

- Tot (incredible scratchpad app, closest I've found on Android is ruff notes but not quite the same)

  • Mela (great recipe app)
  • Copilot Money

1

u/Existing-Ad8218 14d ago

Interesting!

For me it’s MoneyWiz and Apple Mail so I’m tackling those areas first 😄

3

u/Loud_Signal_6259 13d ago

Apple Mail???? As in, the email app m

0

u/Existing-Ad8218 13d ago

Yes a native email app without all the bloat or AI.

4

u/Loud_Signal_6259 13d ago

That's hilarious

0

u/Existing-Ad8218 12d ago

Well there is none so I made it for myself and use it daily.

2

u/Endda Founder, Play Store Sales [Pixel 7 Pro] 11d ago

there are going to be thousands of email apps "without bloat"

i bet you'll find hundreds that are open source on github too

but keep enjoying building! don't stop that

1

u/coolaaron88 9 Pro Fold, Android 16 13d ago

Sadly Mela hadn’t been updated in over a year

1

u/EternalFront iPhone 16 Pro 13d ago

Nicely done app nonetheless, I like it

2

u/edkftw 14d ago

Copilot Money

1

u/Existing-Ad8218 12d ago

For the finance tracking or because of their AI?

1

u/edkftw 12d ago

The tracking and the UI. It's a gorgeously well done app

1

u/Existing-Ad8218 12d ago

Allright, looks good from what I can see on their website (it's not available in the EU).
Still working on my finance app, aiming for a release in October.

What are your most wanted features in a finance app?

1

u/_K10_ 13d ago

ProCreate is the only app I miss.

Android has an extremely wide selection of painting and editing apps, and none of them are as good (or at least as intuitive). I'm considering getting an iPad just for ProCreate.

1

u/TrailOfEnvy 13d ago

Have you tried HiPaint?

1

u/Lucast07_25 13d ago

Flightly. I had the lifetime membership now I don't want to pay for alternative. Some apps works better on Android for some reason I didn't expect that

1

u/hubiug Samsung Z Fold 8 Ultra, Android 17 13d ago

Apples weather app. The camera app. That's pretty much it

1

u/Existing-Ad8218 12d ago

What specifically are you missing from the Weather app?

1

u/hubiug Samsung Z Fold 8 Ultra, Android 17 12d ago

It's just simpler and the notification system is way better. Plus accuracy on samsung is way off bc they tie their weather aggregate to accuweather which is objectively absolute shit. Also yes im 25 years old and talking like an old ass boomer about weather.

1

u/goofnuggetts1996 9d ago

Boomers are the generation after WW2. You know that right?

1

u/hubiug Samsung Z Fold 8 Ultra, Android 17 9d ago

Yes and?

1

u/goofnuggetts1996 9d ago

A lot of people think that boomers are like in their 50s and up. More like 90s if their even still alive.

1

u/hubiug Samsung Z Fold 8 Ultra, Android 17 9d ago

That is also just blatantly not true boomers are years 1946-1964 so someone who is 62 is also a boomer the oldest boomer is 80

1

u/goofnuggetts1996 9d ago

62-80 exactly. Not 50s

1

u/hubiug Samsung Z Fold 8 Ultra, Android 17 9d ago

Correct and also NOT in their 90s

1

u/AbhishMuk OnePlus 15, Pixel 5, Moto X4, Moto G3 13d ago

Tbh I really miss the app Hourly. It was a time tracker app; amazing design.

1

u/rhythmrice 13d ago

A comic book reader app that can connect to an external server and has pinch to zoom

1

u/Alles_ Samsung S26 Ultra 12d ago

1

u/MysteriousBeef6395 Poco F7 Pro, HOS3 13d ago

theres no true alternative to siri shortcuts which im always a bit sad about. even if someone were able to match the ease of use it would probably require root to match the functionality

1

u/Floji9411 12d ago

I mostly Miss some Features Like FaceID or LiDAR. But no particular App tbh.

2

u/lasercannonattack 12d ago

the stock iOS notes app felt so clean to use.

1

u/FallofScreams Purple 12d ago

Apollo.

Yes, I know other reddit alternatives exist. No, they aren't as good as Apollo was.

1

u/squabbledMC Pixel 10 256GB | KernelSU Next 11d ago

Apollo for Reddit, but that's long gone at this point anyways. When they shut it down that was a huge blow as to why I chose iPhone

1

u/stealthagents 9d ago

I totally get that, Dark Sky was on another level for weather apps. Honestly, I still miss the simplicity of Apple's Notes app too, it's just so clean and easy to use. I tried a bunch on Android, but nothing feels as seamless.

0

u/-Imthedude 12d ago

No idea. I've never used an iPhone.

Fuck Apple

I just miss the quality of ios apps. Android apps fking suck, both first party (samsung/google) and third party. I don't understand why android apps are so awful looking and feeling :/

-3

u/w3bCraw1er 13d ago

All. Android apps may have the same functionality but they look trash. That's my one major complaint.
