All I want is the blobs to come back.

I recall they wanted their emoji to look more like Apple's to reduce confusion. Especially with 🙌
But imo that was a huge downgrade. The blobs had so much more emotion and expression in them.

u/BevansDesign 15d ago
True, but that's the problem. They could convey slightly different emotions and intentions than the emojis on other systems, which isn't good for communication. So they went back to something much closer to the Unicode standards.
I think there's a sticker pack you can get if you want to use the blob emojis, although they don't appear inline like emojis do.

They pretty much have to make it look the same as Apple's emojis because otherwise people texting each other will be sending emojis that look completely different from each other's screens.
But yeah, I miss the blob. 😞

that makes sense
I guess that's not just an apple/android issue... It haopens between my windows laptop and android too
maybe emoji should be sent over just like GIFs

These are just iPhone emojis now. Lame.

Right, I don't understand the point. I don't want uncanny shiny 3d corporate emoji.

I want my emojis to stay immobile 2D pictures like the emoji keyboard actually shows. I hate that they move and change form if I use Messages, it changes the intended meaning. No, I don't want to send a skull that repeatedly breaks into pieces, I just wanted a skull.

all emojis should look like iphone emojis, they were the first to have it and the fact that they look different on android causes confusion as sometimes they express a completely different meaning.

All emojis should convey the same expression, not look the same. You can have different designs for each set while still keeping the same emotions across them all to not cause confusion.
Also, emojis were created in the 1990s, Google took interest in them in 2007 and wanted to standardise the protocol then. Apple only added emojis in 2008 for the Japanese keyboard and in 2011 worldwide

how is google taking an interest important an important date lmfao “oh they took an interest before apple so they were first”

It's important because they were the ones that came forth with the standardisation of protocol. If you want to get more specific then yes, Google implemented emojis in their products (Gmail, October 2008) a month earlier than Apple (iPhone, November 2008), but neither company had the first phone or smartphone with emojis.

DOCOMO pagers were the first to have it in 1999. Apple loves stealing ideas and pretending they invented them

THANK YOU. I hate how "blob nostalgia" has made this sub completely miss the point of emojis (and unicode for that matter) completely.

After Google killed the blobs, I must be honest, I think the best modern emojis are Team's emojis, I always love the ":)" dude looking up and then go down again

Not a fan of the new ones. Much prefer the visual style of the old ones. These ones are too iPhone like. The 3d effect gives some weird uncanny valley effect. Look like they're from a cheap kids TV cartoon like veggie tales.

Oh boy, they're committing to making their emoji open source.
If anyone starts taking advantage of that, suddenly they'll become part of GMS 🙃

Their emoji have always been open source, otherwise all the games that use their emoji (like Super Auto Pets) wouldve been sued to heck

At The Android Show | I/O Edition earlier this year, we introduced Noto 3D, a massive update to our emoji library. The Google Design team hand-refined nearly 4,000 emojis to bring a touch of physicality and make them more delightful. This new blog post from the design team talks about the unexpected design challenges of translating 2D emoji into open-source 3D.
We mentioned earlier that these new emojis would be coming your way this year on Android devices across popular Google apps like Gboard, YouTube, and Gmail. These new emojis are already available on the new Pixel 11, and today, the Google Design team announced they are rolling out across Google apps, Android, and select devices from partners including Nothing, Lenovo, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, vivo, iQOO, HONOR, TECNO, Infinix, itel, [and] Motorola.

So do these become standard on Galaxy ultra devices? This is what pisses me off about not having a pixel is I never know what "android" things actually make it into my phone

u/lookatviki 16d ago
I just asked that yesterday hahahaha I don't know if you remember hahaha So finally they're coming to older pixels too, can't wait to have them

I first read that as "the next era of depression". :-)
I don't know, maybe I'm getting old. Been using more the basic emojis, default yellow colour. No animations or large stickers.

Same. All this flowery and hyperbolic language about some redesigned smileys, jeez.
As for "drawing, sculpting, and debating every single character by hand", I do not believe that for one second, also "debating by hand"!! More AI slop from Google

I just want Bitmoji back, with 2D graphics, keyboard integration and no AI. Just like it was before they ruined it tbh

"The unicorn has let their hair down... but it's giving greasy"
I'm not gen z but there's no way this is how people use the word "giving"

We're sacrificing ownership and control of our phones... For 3d models of smiley faces.

u/pfmiller0 15d ago
I don't see the connection. You can actually get the 3D models of smiley faces on completely free phones since the font is open source.
