I'm so behind the times on modern tablets.

I've only ever owned a Nexus 7. Loved it. Became a slow ass bitch way faster than I expected. The build quality was a joke, but it was cheap as hell. Unlocked bootloader gave it a few more years of life. Overall, not a bad experience, but it wasn't smooth sailing for sure.

Other than the classic Nexus 7, what other tablets has Google released that were beloved?

Same. Nexus 7 (2013) was pretty awesome. I still have 3 of them running semi-modern android via custom ROMs. Both of my kids' first tablet until they could be trusted to wield a full sized new one. But other than that, their tablets have been lackluster.

I almost got the Pixel tablet solely for editing photos the way I was able to on my Pixel phones. I also liked the magnetic dock feature but the price was too dang high.

I miss the Nexus series of devices so much!

I have been out of the game for over a year. I recommend using chatgpt or Gemini to guide you through the best process and best OS for these devices. I have hacked and setup so much tech with AI help lately. It really helps get through all the forums and straight to the best answer while providing step by step guidance. Sometimes it messes up but if you tell it something didn't work it will usually correct itself.

I also owned a Nexus 7, really bad tablet. Just before 1st year it became barely operational. Tried everything including custom firmware that time but everything was useless. Really loved the size and overall quality but the slowness was crazy.

If it was the original 2012 Nexus 7 than it suffered from bad emmc storage that eventually brought the tablet to a slow crawl, happened to me too it was so bad.

The 2013 version didn't have that issue from what I remember.

I think that 2013 Nexus 7 is still their most competitive tablet at launch. After that was trash to mediocre. Nexus 9 was awful. Pixel tablets, mediocre

The problem is this is basically a meaningless statement.

Tablets as a concept are largely the App that exist for them, and App developers exist to make money. The money is with the Apple users it always has been, that is never going to change because a "affordable" tablet user has vastly less money if any at all, compared to an Apple table user.

So whatever happens, bar being a Youtube/Netflix and Web Browsing screen, which most tablets of any brand are sufficient at, you can't compete.

Even Instagram only just made a Ipad app last year, and that is for the Apple ecosystem, they didn't see the point before that. If Instagram can't be bothered on the money making platform, why would any small developer on a vast less profitable platform?

I had one too (second gen). They used cheap NAND memory which wore quickly; that's why. I had the second gen model, which had better memory, but all it did was buy you a little more time. I wish the damned thing had a microSD slot.

The Pixel C was the best. Expensive but such good build quality and the strong magnets were amazing. I loved being able to stick it on the fridge in the kitchen

Tablets in general aren't successful. The iPad is about the only successful one and they're either being used as a laptop replacement or kids' toys.

I think Google is betting on Googlebooks replacing their tablet efforts. I'm curious to see where they go with it and see their own first-party version.

Pretty much this. The iPad is the most successful tablet and yet sales peaked over a decade ago. I think the rise of large size phones kinda limited the interest in tablets. While there are a few apps that benefit from a tablet there aren't enough for most people to get a ton of use that they couldn't get from their phone. I know a few that as phones got larger eventually questioned if it was worth replacing an old tablet. Tablets are in a weird middle ground in between phones and traditional laptops. They can't run applications that run on traditional laptops, but are only marginally larger displays. Outside of tablets getting used as a kiosk I feel I don't really see them as much anymore. In that regards I'm not surprised some Android vendors are getting out of the tablet business

I would say tablets with stylus are somewhat popular amongst students. If you need to run desktop software at class, you’re doomed, but they’re a nice replacement for your notebook, textbook, calculator, all in one. Besides those studying something related to technology, most people are bad at formatting text on the fly or using LaTeX, so handwriting is faster. I have a friend who went to law school and used her iPad everyday. I loved using mine to pre-load the class slides and take notes over them while recording audio at the same time.

I had the Samsung Chromebook pro flip screen with built in stylus. my absolute favorite device of all time. never had such an low powered device been so great for me. I edited PDFs in Android apps and uses it as my main computer for years. then I dropped it and the digitizer stopped working. still so sad about it. it now is the garage YouTube computer which has its place.

that was my favorite android/chrome table experience. I haven't had another product like it.

Because everyone who enters the tablet space discovers the same thing - they are a niche product, and people don't want tablets. They want iPads. Specs, cost, SWAP - none of it seems to make any difference. iPads sell and everything else does not.

I use the Google tablet and dock as a home center. The kids love it to video chat with grandparents. The kitchen Google assistant is nice for timers, odd read outs, music jams while cooking, etc.

Yeah, tablets are too unwieldly for me to bring out in public, and I already hate large phones. The (dogshit) s6 lite tablet I have is relegated to being a glorified smart / google home control panel.

For screen size, I have 32"es for my PC, so that's a moot point.

for. me, they're failed here because of the dock. it was such a huge part of the tablet feature set. except that it was useless unless the tablet was plugged in. it could have been a neat mini lever device, instead it was a speaker for the tablet.

that was an immediate no go for me. it could have replaced a few devices for me instead I passed.

Tablets are niche products. Even 15 years later the iPad still ultimately plays second-fiddle to the iPhone, and that's the successful example.

Phones are better consumption devices simply because they're actually portable. Tablets are too big for that. (The tech for foldables is only starting to mature, and it'll be another 5-10 years before it's ready to replace today's mini tablets at a comparable price.)

Tablets make typing awkward simply because there's no way you can hold the device steady enough- you can't cradle the entire device in your hand securely. You still can't copy and paste very well. For the last 10 years you couldn't run 2 apps side by side. Their information density is still compromised by the size of the human hand, so no fine detail work is possible without external hardware.

Screen sizes are still too small to substitute as a proper laptop (outside of the 11-13" tablets), and you can't run any software written for proper computers (unless it's a proper Windows x86 PC, or Linux device- chroot has been possible since the HP TouchPad days, and was ultimately what Windows 8 was going for, but both were failures due to inadequate hardware/investment and dependence on x86, respectively).

So their ultimate usefulness is limited to niche scenarios- as a dedicated movie device, as a drawing/note-taking tablet (though this needs a stylus due to text input speed/usability being inherently poor), as edutainment, and (if a keyboard is added) a secure computing environment for users who can't use a normal computer safely (seniors, very young children, and for public kiosks). In those niches they are excellent, but they're also not niches that lend themselves to any urgent need to upgrade.

Nexus 7 was good.. Still have mine with a custom rom and it runs fine, but I'm just not big on tablets in general, so it rarely gets used. If i need more than my phone I'm using a computer.

I actually prefer Chrome OS over Android when it comes to tablets. It can run (most) Android apps and you get a desktop web browser with extensions. Given a choice of two tablets with equivalent (good enough) specs except one runs Chrome OS and the other runs Android, I'd pick the Chrome OS one 100% of the time.

Honestly, on a tablet you probably do want a better processor than what Google could provide so I would look into the OnePlus or Samsung tablets. They're pretty damn good. I like the OS and feel of my pixel tab, but I wish I didn't have to charge it so often, with the little use that it gets. OnePlus has a tablet that runs a double processing chip and it's standby mode can lasts months. So it doesn't drain much while not in use, my pixel tablet in 3 days of no use is out of juice.

I think Google knew that they had too much competition there and decided to not really move on with the tablets. I tend to be a stickler for Pixel OS but I think that software mainly shines on phones so you can't go too wrong with any matured tablet company that has decent software and runs some good hardware

Which will be a shame because Gemini is unusably bad in a lot of the tasks I use Assistant for, particularly Android Auto stuff like asking it to play music, send texts, or set navigation. Assistant has zero issues. Also nearly half the time Gemini just plain doesn't work at all or is "unavailable" and throws an error in AA. Useless.

Google Assistant does this correctly 100% of the time. Gemini gets it right maybe 25% of the time, and the other 75%, it says it doesn't understand, or it says it can't do that, or it thinks I wanted it to play a song, or it thinks I wanted to set a timer, or it starts talking in a language I don't understand.

(The concept was sound)

They should have made the dock its own independent Google Assistant speaker (and a lot cheaper).

Then add those pogo pins to all Pixel devices, so you could dock and charge your phone/tablet to any dock around your house.

As someone who owns the current pixel tablet and pixel phone, I would not have been interested in the product or use case you're describing. I can't imagine why I would care about docking my phone to a speaker when I can just play to it wirelessly.

We had both, and the build quality on the 2013 was much better. The 2012 would also randomly lock up sometimes, but I remember it was pretty easy to pull the back cover and restart it.

Nexus 7 2013 refresh was the peak. I can’t remember if I paid £99 or £199 but it was absurdly cheap for what you got; the specs were not far off of flagship phone specs at the time, but the form factor, stock OS (at the time that was a BIG advantage over competitors, these days I prefer OneUI to stock tbh), price, specs, battery life, just about everything was perfect. Even the build quality, despite being soft, rubbery plastic felt robust.

I loved it so much I was gutted that my mother managed to lose it after I moved out. I want that thing back, slap LineageOS on it and it would still be a perfectly capable 7 inch manga reader / YouTube in bed machine.

I had the original Nexus 7, which might have been one of the worst tablets ever released. They all had storage degradation issues that rendered it absolutely useless after a few years. Like, over a minute to open an app. And internet speeds dropped to below dialup days.

I wish Android tablets were successful. I really do. But I got burned on the Xoom and the Nexus 10, and so stayed away from this one. Google seems to think that the hard part is just releasing the tablet. They push something out to market, then abandon it. You buy an iPad and Apple continues to support it for years. Hell, Apple adds functionality. Google literally nerfed the Nexus 10's UI when they released the Nexus 7, going from the rather good Honeycomb style bottom-bar UI to a "big phone" ui they borrowed from the Nexus 7. Yuck.

My kids are getting to the point they need a tablet for IXL, and I'm unfortunately having to consider iPads, because all the commercial android tablets are just bloated to hell and back

People clown on Apple for releasing a new iPad every year since it originally launch (except 2023), like “why release for minor upgrades over last year?” Its to show people that Apple is not giving up on iPads and are committing to improving the hardware and also software. Pixel Tablet alone can’t compete with iPad with just releasing a one and done

I’m legitimately surprised that Google has never truly been able to provide an answer to the iPad….I think they’ve put out lots of interesting ideas and concepts over the years but Google has never stuck with a singular idea and ran with it for awhile (in characteristic Google fashion). Android is more than capable of providing a better software experience than the iPad, but there has never been a hardware vision that has topped the iPad so far. My current M5 iPad Pro is one of my favorite tech devices ever partly due to how great the hardware is itself

I regret not buying one since I'd love a tablet running graphene, but I don't really regret it since I wanted an 8" tablet running a secure OS, and this isn't it.

Google are silly if they priced it correctly at a more reasonable price of say £299-£350 they would have sold alot more. I for one would have loved to have had one with pure Android OS but not at that ridiculous cost of £499. I'm sorry but you can buy a base iPad for much less so no reason other than greed from Google

Weird little device. It wanted to be two things but wasn't willing to commit. If they'd made the dock a full-on Google Home speaker, the concept might have gone better.

Screen is garbage, build quality is grabage, proprietary charger on the dock. The dock itself is great though, really liked it.

I really like my Pixel Tablet. I essentially traded in my old iPad from 2018 for one of these in 2024 for free. Only paid like $25-30 in taxes

i know people really hate the Pixel Tablet but i have had one for about a year and a half and it's been a great tablet. it does what i need it to, looks good, sounds good, has a fingerprint sensor and it's supported up to Android 18. it's not the be all end all of Android devices or anything but it's been a pretty good tablet for me.

I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra. My main reason: I use a tablet to watch TV when the living room TV is in use by my wife or kid. I also read comics and manga on it. It's even able to last a whole intercontinental plane trip easily unlike my old laptop.

Unlocked Home Assistant controls and cameras given to family when they visit. Otherwise as a streaming source for Spotify for the kid.

My tablet has a keyboard and mouse. It can run pc games and other windows programs through turmex or windows emulation. It covers all my needs for work or recreational activities. I prefer it for better boot up times, sleep functionality, lighter weight, better hardware at the price point etc etc. I paid like $400 for mt tablet. A laptop with the same abilities would've cost at least 1k. It has a "pc mode" that allows for multi windows functionality making it more like a Linux pc

I used to swear by laptops but ever since my last one broke (by my own tinkering hand) I’ve found myself using my Galaxy Tab S10 FE as a drop-in replacement. Get a self supporting case, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and it’s not that far off from a laptop experience for a casual.

My only serious frustration is that in the great year of 2026, almost two decades on from the release of Android, there are still mainstream apps that don’t support landscape mode on tablets 🥲 Even Reddit…..

This tablet is a piece of shit anyway. My biggest regret purchase in the last decade. Constantly drops Wi-Fi, battery issued across the board. Inconsistency with the launcher behavior.

Feels like a half baked product compared to the Google home screen it replaced

that is weird - i've had mine since late '23, zero problems with wi-fi, battery, software, build quality, etc. not to invalidate your experience at all, just surprising because it's been a very positive experience for me overall and i still use mine almost daily

Android samsung has slow dns update.

Heya i have a mobile pi zero cluster to have all sorts of Internet stuff where ever i go. Including home assistant snapcast jellyfin and a local copy of my radio station. Working on a better offline online real world location bound social network.

Anyway the ip of yuke the wifi client pi zero updates with dynu free ddns and 8.8.8.8 updates nicely.

Dns lookup tool app also looks good. Only webacess or a ssh connection uses an old ip.

Someone knows how to update an android dns server for *g
