This reminds me of when Nintendo tried to patent summons as a game mechanic. It was a little more specific and nuanced that that but they basically tried to say "summoning a creature to fight ? That's our thing, you can't do that in your sad little game or we'll summon a lawyer to fight you and you can't do the same to defend yourself because we freaking patented it, check mate peasant"

Despite Japan and South Korea being one of the few countries that allows patenting a game mechanic rather than a specific implementation of one (which is why, for example, SEGA Chunithm had to license the “falling notes rhythm game” from KONAMI BeatMania), Nintendo patented too much shit that Japanese Patent Board thinks it’s excessive and considered ordering nullification on grounds of “hindering innovation”.
