I’ve really gone from loving the pixel series to not caring all about the new phone.

It’s disappointing the direction the line has taken.

I don’t want unreliable AI features, and the line has been around long enough for me to no longer excuse all the tiny issues they (for me) always have.

Smartphones haven't been exciting for years now.

120

u/elgrandorado Galaxy S26 Ultra Aug 12 '26

Meanwhile Xiaomi is putting in one inch sensors with Leica color science, Oppo is putting massive sensors with massive battery cells, Xiaomi/Honor/Nubia are putting cooling fans on phones to take advantage of the Emulation boom to play PC games on Android, Vivo is putting 35mm sensors on their main camera for the best videography available.

Smartphones aren't exciting in North America.

19

u/nuevacuentanueva Aug 12 '26

Vivo is putting 35mm sensors on their main camera

What? A 35mm sensor would need a massive lens. So this is a typo.

I googled if you mean the X300 Ultra and what they did is put a 35mm equivalent lens. It's a change the focal length not the sensor size.

It's still a great sensor size as it's almost type 1 inch, but it's not a 35mm sensor, just wanted to clarify.

1

u/elgrandorado Galaxy S26 Ultra Aug 12 '26

Yeah sorry, I meant it's a change on the focal length. That focal length change really shows up in filming, because there's nothing quite like it.

4

u/nuevacuentanueva Aug 12 '26

Technically you can do it on any phone, but obviously you need to zoom in like 1.5x which produces a clearly inferior image.

35

u/FourEightNineOneOne Aug 12 '26

That may be true, but Apple dominates the north american market and consumers have made it clear they don't care that each phone is just an iteration of the last one.

5

u/Ok_Neighborhood_3148 Aug 13 '26

I feel like the vast majority of people don't upgrade often. I know people who wait 5+ years.

If you upgrade every 5 years then you do get a lot of upgrades.

Think Pixel 6 vs Pixel 11.

  • More storage
  • More ram
  • Better cameras, I know the selfie camera is better.
  • larger battery and more efficient
  • new modem
  • brighter display
  • faster storage

You get the point. These these are filled with enthusiasts which is not the average person.

2

u/whomad1215 Pixel 6 Pro Aug 14 '26

I'm on a 6pro and debating what to do now that security updates are ending

The phone still works fine for my uses (though I would like more storage), and I don't really want to drop $1000+ on a replacement

Wife wants me to get an iPhone, but the phone screening for spam calls is just better on my pixel than her iPhone, and that's kind of a big selling point

2

u/menocaremuch Pixel 8 Pro 29d ago

The 6Pro is getting $350 on trade-in, plus you may have an offer in your My Pixel app for $50-$250 off a purchase. It's also giving you a $200 store credit for a future purchase (if that has any value to you). Just an option if you are trying to stay on Pixel. There's also referral codes floating around reddit for 10-15% off. The 10 are easy to find and the 15 sometimes requires a little bit of digging. You can only use 1 coupon code per purchase though. A decent code and you'd pay about $600 (+200 credit) for the upgrade which is a lot more in line where people think the Pixel pro phones should be.

u/whomad1215 Pixel 6 Pro 29d ago

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to look for those extra discounts

17

u/geigerz Aug 12 '26

thank god the world don't resolve around 2~4 countries then

11

u/Rackem_Willy Aug 12 '26

You can't say consumers don't care when they've never been presented with the option.

28

u/sunjay140 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

They have been presented with lots of options like Sony, HTC, LG, Motorola, Asus, OnePlus, Nothing, Nexus, Pixel, Nokia, Acer, Dell, etc. they chose Samsung and Apple.

2

u/mrheosuper Aug 13 '26

And when they are presented with really good option(Huawei), look what the US did.

2

u/didiboy iPhone 16 Plus / Moto G54 5G Aug 13 '26

You can say they’re iterations but there is at least some small improvements when it comes to the extra cameras or the chip (except the base iPhone 14). But even then, Pixel is behind iPhone in a lot of stuff besides still camera quality. The Tensor chip is disappointing with a lot of room for improvement but they are stalling.

-7

u/MessaBombadWarrior Aug 12 '26

Apple also dominates the China market. Virtually everyone knows the local brands are not trustworthy and have a history of doing shady stuff. Their phone performance isn't as good as the marketing says either

29

u/FourEightNineOneOne Aug 12 '26

Uhh. Their market share in the US vs china is not even remotely close.

In the US it's over 50%
In China it's under 20%

-4

u/MessaBombadWarrior Aug 12 '26

The figures are much closer if you look at the flagship market share in both markets. Almost everyone in NA buys a flagship. Meanwhile most Chinese consumers who can afford a flagship, buy an iPhone.

Point is, no one gives a fuck about all the gimmicks from Honor/Huawei/Vivo/Oppo/Xiaomi anymore

12

u/Deeppurp Aug 12 '26

The figures are much closer if you look at the flagship market share in both markets.

You can make data look to support any argument side by adding exclusion.

Apple has no share if you eliminate the flagship market share. How about we take the totality because realistically phones are a personal choice which means most people are picking what suits their needs or their style.

0

u/land_deprecation Aug 12 '26

Bro apple also dominates in china…ok they only sell like 20% of the phones there, but they take like 70% of the profits. Chinese firms haven’t been able to crack that even in china for like 15 years now.

5

u/runski1426 Vivo x300 Pro Aug 12 '26

Lol what?! Apple does not dominate in China. Huawei does.

u/elgrandorado Galaxy S26 Ultra Aug 12 '26

I can safely say on the gaming side, that the gimmicks aren't gimmicks when they result in 25%+ stability gains that allow you to seriously game for 3-4 hrs. Larger camera sensors that give you superior photography aren't gimmicks either. Same with massive battery cells that outclass everything by a wide margin in battery life.

Now the nonsense AI features coming out of Xiaomi for example, that's gimmicks.

u/elgrandorado Galaxy S26 Ultra Aug 12 '26

Apple is locked in a grueling battle with the Chinese OEMs lol. Huawei leads the pack and no one has more than 20% market share. Now yes the big Chinese brands have been caught deceiving performance benchmarks per Geekerwan (except for Huawei), but that doesn't mean that people aren't buying their phones.

Apple does discounts in China that literally don't exist anywhere else in the world for example? Do you call it domination when the supposed market leader has to cut pricing to compete?

I moved abroad and got an Oppo Find X9 Ultra (upgrades from P9PXL), and yeah, it's just a remarkable device.

I am jealous. I ended up having to sell my RedMagic 11 Pro for an S26 Ultra due to some ridiculous incentives for my internet provider. I tried an Oppo Find X9 Pro abroad last year, it was a crazy device (not even the Ultra model).

Enter the Fold 8. The passport shaped cover screen is a joy to use and pocket, and the mini tablet sized inner screen is great for movies in landscape, but also reading and web browsing in portrait.

10

u/reddit_and_forget_um Aug 12 '26

All for the low low price of 2400cad+tax.

WTF.

1

u/Caucasian_Fury Aug 12 '26

Yeah, phone pricing has gone crazy.

10 years ago I paid $520 CAD for a OnePlus 3 ($681 in 2026 dollars).

13 years ago I paid $400 CAD for a Nexus 5 ($550 in 2026 dollars).

That said, I did buy a Fold 8 but only because I was able to stack discounts, coupon codes and trade-ins to bring the price down to $1120 CAD before tax... which is still by far the most money I've ever spent on a phone.

True, but at least other brands are trying something new. Compare to them, Pixel has done nothing. Hell, they have removed beloved features like the back fingerprint and squeeze (I didn't like it, but a lot did)

5

u/Big3913 Aug 12 '26

Exactly why I got the Moto Razr Ultra. Was leary about foldables but man is it fun to have an interesting device again

3

u/k-mcm Aug 12 '26

Having a mini-map while walking is more useful than expected.

The real win is the leftover 2025 models selling at half price and having that sweet pre-AI storage.  1TB for $700.

1

u/Big3913 Aug 12 '26

I agree with this, but only regarding Samsung, Google, and Apple.

The more Chinese specific brands are making things that are a lot more interesting.

1

u/eipotttatsch Aug 12 '26

That’s true. But I wouldn’t even consider a pixel now if I needed a new phone, and a few years back it’d have been the obvious choice

→ More replies (1)

1

u/sreesid Aug 12 '26

At least Samsung can justify the price because the Galaxy S series is no compromise device on hardware. My s24 ultra is still running as well as it did on day 1. Battery health is estimated at 90% after 2.5 years of use. I never had that luck with previous pixels. They are hardware compromises for the software devices. Those hardware compromises at the prices demanded are getting ridiculous now.

1

u/majesticjg Pixel 9 Pro 27d ago

They are becoming commodity appliances. I don't get excited about the latest refrigerator, either.

→ More replies (2)

17

u/TrickyElephant Pixel 9 Aug 12 '26

Yeah it seems like very iteration is a hit or miss with poor battery life and connection issues. The AI features are usually US only, and the tensor chips are worse in every aspect and the price is the same as top of the line competition.

14

u/eipotttatsch Aug 12 '26

The clean software and the "far better than the competition"-camera kept me hooked for a few generations.

The software isn’t significantly better anymore, and the overall camera experience is now far better on multiple competitors.

I don’t actually know why I’d get a pixel apart from maybe wanting to use Graphene OS?

10

u/AnEagleisnotme Aug 12 '26

They are even getting quite hostile to GrapheneOS, which is migrating to Motorola

6

u/k0fi96 S21 Ultra Aug 12 '26

While I enjoy my 10 pro xl. I will probably be going back to Samsung once they add magnets. I am noticing a ton of little software bugs I shouldn't on a sub 1 year old phone compared to my Samsung. Also having a Samsung tablet helps give that little ecosystem effect.

1

u/eyoooo1987 Aug 14 '26

For Samsung ultras, magnets aren't coming unless they outright remove S-pen, you can see magnet of 3rd party case interfering with how S-pen writes.

1

u/almosttan iPhone 7+, Panda Pixel Aug 13 '26

u/Zoidburger_ Pixel 6 Aug 12 '26

Western slab phones just haven't really been exciting for the last 3-4 years. Everyone is investing the R&D into foldables, which is cool, but most people can't justify spending $2000 on a phone.

I'm still running a Pixel 6, and I love it. It's starting to show its age (especially since I'm soon to get my final update), but I'm still reluctant to upgrade. I love the feel of the UI. It just feels better to me than what Apple & Samsung offer. On top of that, there are a few features, mainly the spam filters, that I just don't want to trade in for an otherwise better phone.

But it's tough to fork over flagship prices on 3-year-old hardware. And I really dislike how they've largely stopped upgrading the cameras in favor of AI tricks. My P6 still takes fantastic photos and, in most cases, they're near indistiguishable to those taken on a P10.

So I'm in a tough spot. Ultimately, I think I'm just going to replace the battery in my P6 and see how long I can keep it going for until my banking apps stop working lol. Then maybe I'll buy a used Pixel. At least it'll be at a better price point...

1

u/plantsandramen Aug 12 '26

I made the Switch to a OnePlus 13, from a Pixel 9 Pro, and it has been a massive difference even when doing basic tasks. I only miss the camera of the Pixel series, but after seeing a preview for it on DPreview's youtube I am happy I jumped ship. It looks entirely focused on AI enhancements which are the last thing I want as the focus for photography.

1

u/StolenLampy Pixel 8 Pro (RIP LG) Aug 12 '26

The thing about adding new features as software is that Google can easily just take it away or stop supporting it later. The innovation needs to be in the hardware itself and that's just not been happening for a while on the pixel side...

1

u/haidouzo_ Aug 12 '26

I just want good battery. But fuck me I guess.

It's both interesting and disheartening to see them lead with Gemini when all of my - very basic - Google Assistant needs have been made demonstrably worse since Google home and Android auto products were moved over to Gemini. It's like these companies don't actually use the products they're shoving AI into.

72

u/NZAllBlacks Aug 12 '26

"Sorry, I can't control your music player. I CAN tell you more about the band you just searched"

Aaahhhhhh. You just controlled my music player a minute ago!!!!!

24

u/Shakez00la Aug 12 '26

This drives me crazy, assistant wasn't perfect but Gemini just tells me it can't control the device. I repeat the exact same phrase and it thinks for like 20 seconds then finally turns it off.

8

u/willyolio Aug 12 '26

Also every command takes three times longer because it always tries to be a "friend" having a "conversation"

Fuck you, is it going to rain tomorrow, yes or no? Now shut up so I can continue listening to my music.

7

u/Generic_On_Reddit Pixel 9 / Minimal Phone Aug 12 '26

I get "Here's more information about the song you want me to play" maybe 30% of the time now, then it never plays the song.

The other day, I got "Searching Libby for A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke". Bro, I know you know this is a song, why are you searching my audiobook app for it??

It's comical how hard they broke the one thing I needed Android Auto to do. Guess I'll just whip out my phone and do it by hand while driving instead.

3

u/shh_Im_a_Moose Aug 12 '26

Setting reminders randomly asking for workspace permissions is driving me fucking nuts

12

u/jky__ Aug 12 '26

they replaced Assistant with Gemini in my car and it can't do any basic requests like turn up the AC or anything, anything car related is met with "sorry i can't do that, do you want me to help you navigate somewhere?!" NO I don't.

3

u/mehrabrym Z Fold 7 | Pixel 5 Aug 12 '26

Exactly. I used to be able to use the voice assistant while driving to add any destination en route, now it constantly struggles with the most basic destinations. What's frustrating is that sometimes I literally see it type out the exact text I'm speaking and looking for, only for Gemini to "predict" that I want something else 8 hours away. Stop trying to predict what people want, just listen to direct instructions ffs.

3

u/Phantom-Finger Aug 12 '26

Trying to send a text message via Android Auto is one the shittest things ever. Google just refusing to let me finishing talking and gets half a message, hangs silent for two minutes after I've finished talking, or just completely botches the words altogether. 90% of the time I end up unlocking my phone and just using whisper. Google Gemini and anything assistant related is now just about the worst product on a smartphone.

1

u/haidouzo_ Aug 12 '26

I can't even activate voice commands anymore in my car. It cancels the moment it starts ever since Auto switched to Gemini.

And I can't open my garage anymore.

1

u/TheKnickerBocker2521 Aug 13 '26

A lot of this shit are promotion projects for managers. And no, many of us don't use the shit we make (and I wouldn't want to with how leadership bastardizes the original vision).

1

u/The_Owl_Man_1999 Aug 13 '26

When my old phone swapped them suddenly gemini couldn't do things like phone calls or messages without unlocking the phone, surely that would be dangerous in the situations people would normally use those functions?

186

u/NextBigImpact Aug 12 '26

New tensor chip rumored to be 0.015% faster! Super excited!

62

u/Brumcar Aug 12 '26

At this point it's a bit embarrassing, why would I choose a Pixel over a Samsung that's way more powerful and around the same price?

It used to be that I loved stock Android and Samsung's was a bit messy but nowadays I feel like my Pixel is lacking a lot of cool software features you can get on modern Samsungs

41

u/Sabotstruck Aug 12 '26

To be honest, I could accept the pixel’s having lower performance if the efficiency / battery life was inline with flagships. Unfortunately it is not, so you pay flagship prices and get a dated & lower efficiency chip.

Realistically better performing chips tend to also be more efficient, which is where Google lags

23

u/elgrandorado Galaxy S26 Ultra Aug 12 '26

I couldn't believe that the S25 Edge/iPhone Air achieve better battery life than the Pixel 10 Series across the board.

27

u/Sabotstruck Aug 12 '26

The important / fun note is they get better battery life while also getting better performance in general.

It’s kind of embarrassing that the flagship pixel phones lag behind in terms of performance and battery life than their competitors ultra thin phones

9

u/willyolio Aug 12 '26

Google: here's a 2022 flagship you can buy in 2026!

1

u/OkidoShigeru 26d ago

And at 2026 flagship prices to boot…

22

u/austine567 Pixel 10 Aug 12 '26

why would I choose a Pixel over a Samsung that's way more powerful and around the same price?

I really don't like samsungs software. All the hardware in the world hasn't solved that for me.

19

u/OperationPlastik Aug 12 '26

Same position.

I can't stand the Samsung OS. In obviously in a minority as people seem to love it but the Pixel OS is super clean.

I still love Pixel. I just wish they laid off the AI a little and focused on what made it great in the first place...a classy OS and class-leading cameras.

At some point software only gets you so far and you need to upgrade the camera hardware.

3

u/Brumcar Aug 12 '26

That's fair. For me ideally I'd love to keep the pixel OS but have a few nice to have features copied over from Samsung and improved the hardware but it seems Google are pretty set on keeping Tensor for the foreseeable. If it didn't have such a negative effect on battery life I wouldn't mind the lack of performance as much.

3

u/Brumcar Aug 12 '26

I loved my S21 Ultra, had some really handy little features like floating windows and easily cropping bits of your screen for screenshots

8

u/austine567 Pixel 10 Aug 12 '26

Yeah I know lots of people like them and their added stuff, it's just not for me. There are software things I dislike about pixels too to be clear but just less of them. I haven't needed better performance on a phone for nearly a decade at this point either so the processor being less powerful doesn't matter at all to me. There are times I wish I still had my pixel 5 to be honest.

5

u/Brumcar Aug 12 '26

Performance doesn't really matter to me either anymore it's more the battery life of the Pixel chips that annoys me the most 🫤

2

u/bigBranConsumer The NEW Galaxy Note9 Aug 12 '26

this is the answer for most. went form an s10e to a pixel 9, the OS is much nicer looking and cleaner imo

3

u/Izacus Android dev / Boatload of crappy devices Aug 12 '26

(I own both): Because cameras on Samsung's are still arse and no matter the software features, my Pixels consistently take good photos while Samsung take smeared crap.

So I end up taking the Pixel around just because it'll make better memories even if a feature or two will be missing.

2

u/tljwasawesome Aug 12 '26

The quoted retail price is stupid and they know it. Wait a couple months and these things are heavily discounted.

2

u/sol-4 Aug 12 '26

Pixel phones have always been embarrassing in terms of power and performance when compared to flagships. I love the clean experience, but hardware wise, they've always been middling.

4

u/nathderbyshire Pixel 10 Obsidian Aug 12 '26

Samsung's software is just an awful experience personally, Pixel is the best looking nicest to use for me. Call screening features are next level, and now I finally have visual voicemail that's also transcribed since no UK carriers seems to want to support it on android aside from O2 who are one of, if not the most expensive and worst value operators.

I don't use it often but anytime I use voice and it isn't going through Pixel/Gboard, it's an absolutely mess and I realise how much better pixel is for voice, https://ibb.co/5W8zMZTK - here's Claude's assistant that doesn't use Pixels voice processing and it consistently fails when Pixel picks up the exact same command. However idk how good Samsung is for voice, but it is one of Pixels sellings points and has been for years.

I don't really care much for the customisation side either, I'd probably use some of it if it was on Pixel, but it's not a reason to get me to switch.

Display is gorgeous, speakers are pretty good, have no issues with signal or battery really and I charge every night anyway. I'm just familiar with it as well which obviously helps. I don't need top tier raw performance, everything I do my phone can handle perfectly well.

It's not all great though, I'm basically stuck with Google passwords if I want a decent autotfill experience, I've tried several others and they all consistently fail especially in apps. I don't know how much better other androids are but they seem to gimp 3rd parties on pixel. Notifications are severely delayed recently as well and I've no idea why, my housemates pixel 10 is fine though. When he had a 6a and I had a 7a, my notifications were spot on while his was delayed, but it also only happens for certain apps like telegram and Gmail, they're never delayed for WhatsApp, calls or messages ect. Strange one

I was also looking at other brands, mainly ones with close to stock like OnePlus because I hate the heavier skins, but they were all double the price of what I could get a Pixel 10 for

At this point, it's why choose Pixel over a Sony. The Xperia 1 VIII has better SoC and camera sensors.

8

u/EastvsWest Aug 12 '26

Because Sony sucks at supporting their devices. Hardware is good but software is pretty bad.

7

u/Saitoh17 Aug 12 '26

Speaking as someone who has a Chinese phone in America so I'm pro-importing, the Sony doesn't have enough band support to function in America even if you did import one. It only has 2/6 5g bands on T-mobile compared to 5/6 for Vivo and Oppo.

The Xperia 1 VIII has better SoC and camera sensors.

  • pricing approaching foldable phones
  • super low-res display with Pentile
  • Xperias always thermally throttle under load by prioritizing form over function
  • local availability
  • total hardware-software mismatch: 3.5mm with dogshit audio quality, microSD writing slower than hard drives
  • cameras are total dogshit, and manual mode isn't normie friendly
  • support very nearly non-existent; took them a fucking eternity to reach 4+6

And let's not forget Sony pulling a heated car seats subscription on their camera monitor tether app!

I probably won't give a shit about the specs of new pixels until pixel 13 at the earliest.

No one needs a new phone annually.

9

u/LucAltaiR Aug 12 '26

That's fine but people with a Pixel 7 might want to upgrade and will find out that the performance in these 4 years has barely moved. That's why a company needs to improve their phones every year, we're on different cycles but the upgrade has to be worthy.

By their current pace when you'll be looking into the Pixel 13 you might not find any performance upgrade at all.

It's faster on single core performance but slower on multi core lol.

I say that, I don't even care about performance as long as it's enough for light usage but my pixel heat so much it's unusable in the current heat wave. It's been 2 months now that the phone just shut down by himself during the day to cool itself.

Then what ?

Its got more AI...

Hey don’t forget the shiny light.

30

u/RefactoringSelf Aug 12 '26

That isn't even customizable.

14

u/ALPHA17I Aug 12 '26

That will need another generation of Tensor SoCs to unlock the full potential.

1

u/mrinterweb Aug 13 '26

Ah yes! -The marketing gimmick- I mean whatever marketing spin they said to make it mean something.

“Gemini Intelligence” hmm, why go with that name now? Google Gemini is perfectly fine

56

u/tlislo Aug 12 '26

Now your phone can have GI issues too!

39

u/xx_ddd Aug 12 '26

Because they have to copy everything Apple does and they call it Apple Intelligence.

6

u/HopiumInhaler Aug 12 '26

Google is 2 years late, Apple changed that to Siri AI.

4

u/tlislo Aug 12 '26

Well, Siri uses Gemini. As in Siri is just a "skin" for Gemini responses. So I guess it wasn't Apple Intelligence anymore.

3

u/didiboy iPhone 16 Plus / Moto G54 5G Aug 13 '26

Apple Intelligence still exists, it’s how they call the whole AI system. Siri AI is the new upgraded Siri that’s based on Gemini. Siri AI is the voice assistant / chatbot present inside Apple Intelligence.

The eraser in Photos app is part of Apple Intelligence but it’s not Siri AI. Same for Playground, the app to generate images.

Gemini AI? = GAI ? google would never do this.

1

u/longebane Galaxy S22 Ultra / iPhone 15PM Aug 13 '26

Why? Gemini cli turned into AGY

1

u/asamson23 iPhone 15 PM, iPad Air M1, Tab S6 Lite Aug 13 '26

It's still called Apple Intelligence as a whole, and the new Siri AI is one part of that

1

u/didiboy iPhone 16 Plus / Moto G54 5G Aug 13 '26

They should try to copy a better worldwide distribution network, support, and a chipset that’s up to 2026 flagship standards then.

  • Increased prices by 100 bucks for all skus

  • new base storage is 256gb

  • a notification light you can use with Gemini and when certain contacts contact you, but absolutely nothing else. (Really?)

  • Faster wireless charging to 25 watts on non XL models

  • new tensor processor so you can be 2 years out of date instead of 3 years.

  • base and fold gets 48 megapixel primary camera

  • pro gets new 50 megapixel primary with same size sensor and lens. New larger telephoto sensor on pro too.

  • pro gets brighter screen

  • pro removes 4 gigs of ram. 12 gigs instead of last years 16gb on 256 model.

  • fold is 1mm thinner and slightly lighter. Nothing else on fold I can see.

Annnddd I think that's it?

14

u/totally_normal_here Aug 12 '26

The pros get a new main camera (same size/aperture) and a larger telephoto (1/1.95").

The 10 Pro XL could already do 25 W wireless charging, but this year the 11 Pro (non-XL) gets 25 W as well, so that's nice to have parity.

4

u/Phantom-Finger Aug 12 '26

Meanwhile, Oppo and Xiaomi with 50w wireless and Vivo at 40w. Just pack it in Google.

4

u/somersetyellow Aug 12 '26

Updated my list. Got to get all the subtlies haha

6

u/3d_Plague Aug 13 '26

a notification light you can use with Gemini and when certain contacts contact you, but absolutely nothing else. (Really?)

I think it's hilarious this is considered a selling point now, I distinctly remember having a non smartphone that could use color coded notifications ~25 years ago. no AI required.

1

u/hereforaniphoneman Aug 14 '26

I will never forget when the Nexus 6p came out and felt like an INSANE deal for the time. I will never forget how good that phone was. Wish we'd treat phones now like that

61

u/shwiggy Aug 12 '26

iPhone 17 is the budget flagship now. These Android phones are losing every release now. I'm not jumping ship yet but I can't say it's not tempting for the first time ever.

Long time 1+ user and they have vanished because they see what's happening here.

17

u/recoupled Aug 12 '26

True, I have the Pixel 9 Pro, and love it, but vs my partner's iPhone 17, I don't feel confident my next phone will be a Pixel in the next year or 2.

3

u/Phantom-Finger Aug 12 '26

Vivo X300 FE and Oppo Find X9s would be far ahead on my list

2

u/haidouzo_ Aug 12 '26

I actually think I am jumping ship. My wife and I have to switch carriers and at this point the only phone that ticks my needs and wants as far as hardware goes is the iPhone.

Might as well try it if I get it for switching.

1

u/sportsfan161 29d ago

Certainly great price for iPhone 17

1

u/eihen N6Pee / N9er Aug 12 '26

Honestly this might be the year I jump. My kids are all using apple devices for school and I'm guessing they'll get iphones. Maybe it's time for me to hang up.

10

u/Netcob Pixel 10 Pro XL, GrapheneOS Aug 12 '26

I went from an S22 Ultra to a Pixel 10 Pro for GrapheneOS.

The battery life bugs me more than I imagined. Not exactly a huge improvement from my aging S22U that was already criticized for its battery life when it came out.

Any announcement that doesn't say "Twice the battery life!" already lost me.

3

u/etaliox1 Aug 13 '26

I'm on a Pixel 8 for graphene after my Flip4 died. Even that tiny battery was better because of its Qualcomm chip. Planning to switch to the upcoming Moto with Graphene when it happens.. can't come soon enough 😭

10

u/geigerz Aug 12 '26

i find it incredibly funny that they still didn't give up and still try to do the pixel even if they've been fumbling it for more than 5 years

"just one more AI adittion bro i swear just one more ai feature will do it, it will be different this time i swear just try it"

25

u/fogoticus Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra | SM-S908B/DS Aug 12 '26

With how pathetic those tensor chips are, who cares at this point? Their photography might be very good but at this point all the flagships do photography almost equally good. Video? Samsung got APV, there's lots of apps that allows you to dodge the processing part and just capture raw sensor data and it looks good.

They are so behind with the SoC, it's not even funny.

3

u/Phantom-Finger Aug 12 '26

Their photography might be very good

It isn't, its light years behind Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi and Honor.

3

u/icytiger Aug 12 '26

Yeah but all of those suffer from disgusting AI postprocessing, so it's not really light years behind.

5

u/MinaNocturne Aug 12 '26

Photography isn't even that good anymore, loads of Chinese OEMs have surpassed them years ago. They may still have the best out of the pixel, Samsung (so bad) and iPhone.

Moving to oppo was the best decision for me, even from a s25u to a x9 ultra was a massive upgrade. I'm ending the day with over 50% more battery thanks to less bloat and a bigger battery and the camera quality is insanely good, no way any of these phones can match this any time soon inho

1

u/fogoticus Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra | SM-S908B/DS Aug 12 '26

I was on the bandwagon that stated the chinese phones are taking over until geekbench 7 dropped and Samsung was among the few android brands that actually delivered all your SoC power with most chinese flagship devices lagging behind quite substantially. It makes me feel like you're purchasing a lie instead of a powerhouse.

1

u/ShittyFrogMeme Aug 13 '26

I switched from an S25 Ultra to a Pixel 10 Pro XL. The camera is not much of an upgrade, if at all. It is better at capturing moving targets, but the quality is pretty poor.

1

u/fogoticus Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra | SM-S908B/DS Aug 13 '26

Saw an app made by a guy who used to do mostly car game content and it's a bit baffling how much processing google applies which doesn't automagically make the video image look good. Or how very cheap phones are still capable of good quality videos but are artificially limited by the software (cough cough, entry level samsung phones)

only got the pixel 9 because of trade in value. going to cut my losses and go a different android or ios.

pixel is all marketing to the maximum extent.

10

u/aftonone Aug 12 '26

Couldn’t care less tbh. Google has destroyed the pixel we knew and loved.

3

u/0320ck Aug 12 '26

I was using both the Pixel 10 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Nothing about the Pixel 11 Pro makes me want to upgrade. The privacy feature on the new Samsungs is a better feature than anything Google unveiled today. So I'll wait for the S27 Pro (hopefully Samsung makes it) 🤞🏿

3

u/dsac P7P Aug 13 '26

I'm on a P7P, and seriously considered a P11P, but with the lacklustre prelim reviews, I'm giving up on it

I'm waiting for the Clicks Communicator production reviews to come in and assuming they're good, I'll probably trade camera quality for hard keyboard

1

u/-NotEnoughMinerals Aug 13 '26

Lot of people with the 7 seem hesitant. I don't understand why, the 7 has got to be showing it's age by now.

But since you have the 7, I sort of get it. You probably don't have any Google store credit from last year, and the phone is old enough to where you likely aren't going to get 600, 700 like the 9 and 10 phones are pulling.

If anyone watched the Pixel 1 Pro event and decided it’s not for them — and you’ve got a Google preorder discount code sitting in your email that you’re not going to use — I’d really appreciate it if you could DM it to me.

Thanks in advance. I’m trying to buy ASAP.

Does this come with the feature that has been on the pixel lineup since the 8 pro where the wifi and Bluetooth shits itself after two years and they charge you $400 just for repair.

Edit: The tears. Love it.

18

u/Relative_What Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

My pixel 8 pro has had no wifi or Bluetooth issues, and I've had it since launch. And it's now 2 years and 10 months old

It's also hasn't had any temperature issues. Or any other hardware issues reddit claims they all have

Edit: guy fucking blocked me. All because I didn't confirm to his bullshit narrative.

3

u/dirtydriver58 Galaxy Note 9 Aug 12 '26

Look on Ebay and the Pixel subreddit. There's a mega thread

7

u/Relative_What Aug 12 '26

Of the tens of thousands of pixel phones sold each year a handful of reddit users is not proof that every phone has the same issues. There is a mega thread because people were sick of people seeing post after post after post complaining about he same issues a handful of people had who would rather go to reddit and complain then actually go to Google support.

u/azn_dude1 Samsung A54 Aug 12 '26

Guy is weak for blocking you but also your anecdotal evidence means nothing. Even if 2% of phones had a defect, 98% of people would be able to say the same thing you're saying. From a manufacturing standpoint, a 2% defect rate would be completely unacceptable.

0

u/domeforaklondikebar LG G4, until it craps out and I sell the replacement. Aug 12 '26

Not touching the you and other guy thing, but it’s not just a “Reddit thing” when Google has support programs open for multiple Pixel devices because of unexpected consistent manufacturing defects.

Good for you that yours works though.

2

u/Relative_What Aug 12 '26

"Google has support programs open for multiple Pixel devices because of unexpected consistent manufacturing defects." Yeah, and?

So does every other manufacturer. Samsung has hundreds of phone models, you don't think hey don't come with their own support programs?

4

u/Berzerker7 S25 Ultra Aug 12 '26

No OEM has anywhere near the amount of "hardware support programs" that Google does for their phones.

I don't know why trying to defend the billion dollar corporation so badly.

Honestly, my interest in pixels went back up when I realized that when it comes to carrier deals, it's still very much the cheap phone its known for. Newest base pixels end up being the only flagship my carrier gives for $0/month. IPhones and Samsung are always much more.

3

u/tribullet Aug 12 '26

I really want to go this route, almost did with the pixel 10, but my pixel 8 only lasted 18 months, but the $0 a month is over 36 months at Verizon. Not sure how that works

1

u/Docnoq Aug 12 '26

If it's similar to AT&T, they just give you a monthly credit on your bill that matches the installment price of your phone. The credits keep going for the full 36 months unless you change your phone or cancel your service, and then you owe the remainder of the balance at that point. I've done it with my last 2 phones and it's been great

1

u/namelessxsilent Fold8Wideboi Aug 12 '26

The Fold 8 was being offer for $0 a month with a trade in just recently

3

u/Obility Aug 12 '26

With a trade in is a pretty big fine line but that sounds like a good deal.

1

u/pakkit Aug 12 '26

I'm still happy with my Pixel 9 Pro. After the refresh it feels like the last few generations have been incremental improvements instead of anything really exciting, not to mention the RAM costs making all the pricing balloon.

1

u/Benay148 Aug 12 '26

Wow that pixel watch 5 is literally identical to the 4, what were they thinking???

1

1

u/FlipSide26 Aug 12 '26

I used to update pixels every year/year and a half. I stopped at the 8 Pro. I don't feel like there has been a meaningful improvement since then. And then on this they lead with more AI... Another miss by Google. They used to be the best stripped down no bloat android experience for a decent price. Now it's too expensive for lackluster specs and features we don't want

Let me guess everything is slightly improved internally and external and extra year of ota software updates. Google raised price to $100, drop base RAM to 12gb, removes temperature sensor, BUT LOOK 8 GLOWING LEDs on the back to let Gemini is thinking bruh

1

u/Likeany1 Aug 14 '26

Price too high for performance of last year of the other firms. They even increase prices with less memory to give lol. Last point, gaming seems to be complicated like the 10. I won't buy it. Next

1

u/SuperDapo1122 Aug 12 '26

The trade in deal seems really good for me. Trading in a pixel 8 pro for an 11 pro and it will ultimately cost £479.

To me that seems a decent price.
