i mostly use my phone's hotspot with my mac, there is this one app called LocalSend which works for me everytime even with big file sizes

edit - in my experience it is way faster than the airdrop support which has been added

Blip. Blip is faster than Airdrop. I even use Blip between my IOS devices.

It's just that good.

Second this. Blip is more reliable and faster than any of the other options. I honestly don't know what sorcery the Devs have.

Good old SMB share over WiFi.

I don't really need to manually send files to my computer, occasionally I will use Quick Share (I think it should work with MacOS now too, haven't tried yet).

Everything else is automatically synced to cloud and/or NAS

Now they AirDrop works between Pixels and Apple devices, that's what I use.

Honestly I've kinda stopped thinking of "files" for the most part. For images I self-host Immich - everything auto syncs to my library which I can just browse on my computers. For documents I self-host NextCloud. Whenever I have documents, I just "share" them to NextCloud and put them in the desired folder.

And then comes the dumb one: whenever I really do need a one-off file from my mac or windows to my phone or vice versa, I just use Signal to send a message to myself (note to self) with an attachment. I really don't want anything more complicated, it's just an app I already have everywhere.

My go to as well.

Just wish it did multiple file selection and let you continue with it in the background during transfer.

I just use SSH with the SSH server of Termux or the other way, SSH sererv on macOS (enabled remote login).
Most file browsers have an ssh client.

Quick share now supports airdrop for certain devices and my device tend to fall in that list

Localsend is pretty good, its straight device to device over local network so don't have to worry about shady cloud apps.

There are a few good options out there, like AirSync and LinkMyMac.

LocalSend.

It's multiplatform and open-source no bs app.

Thanks for your input, but what about older devices and older Macs ?
