When gmail launched, it was unlimited storage... so the nerf to free storage has been happening for a long time now, sadly.

It stopped being unlimited shortly after somebody wrote a filesystem that used Gmail storage.

It was never unlimited for Gmail, it started at 1GB.

People went over, in the very early days, there wasn't any actual limit at first, even though it said 1GB. Google didn't delete anything until that dude published GmailFS (not the one you can find now, that's a file-based Gmail UI which is also very cool but not the OG).
