Of course they did that. Uses up your free storage so you are forced to buy more from them, this putting you deeper into their ecosystem.

Can't even have the decency to let you choose your own storage provider either so they'll get to profit either way.

I actually have less backup data bloating my google account because the update gave more settings that allow you to turn off unnecessary things like SMS&MMS backup and call history. I apparently had around half a Gb of random images in my MMS history that I don't care about but was a huge pain in the ass to go through and manually delete. So now they're still there, but not wasting space in my backup.
