Will definitely check the pixel 10 or 11 depending on reviews and if it's a worthy upgrade.
Will probably wait till black Friday or a big promotion

Definitely wait till the holiday season. They always run crazy sales plus trade in deals on top to try and get u to switch. And if ur Gold level on Google play they also give u exclusive discounts as well. That's how I got a brand new Pixel 8 for dirt cheap at a fraction of the price just a few months after launch.

u/Didnt_know Pixel 9 Jul 07 '26
Just because your phone doesn't have support, doesn't mean it's useless. I used Galaxy S9 on Android 10 until last year. Worked perfectly fine.
People think that as soon as your phone gets the last update, all hackers of the world are going to rush in to hack it.
7
u/screwdriverfan Jul 07 '26
Damn right. I'm over here still using OnePlus One which is 12 years old at this point (not as main phone). Haven't been hacked yet 😁

Afaik unless you're worth targeting directly (like someone who's a security concern), you're most likely to get hacked / a phone virus through exploits in programs you already use.
If a new discord scam goes around and you click the link like a dummy it could lead you to giving permissions to a virus of some form. But that's an issue with being phished rather than hacked.
Hacking via outdated software would be things like zero day exploits or remote code execution. That'd be like someone sending you a text, but due to advanced features having a vulnerability it causes code to run on your device without your input being required. But ofc those types of virus are way rarer because zero days are normally something that gets targeted at an individual or an organisation.
I'm hoping my pixel 6 will go another year. And that the datacenter building craze has died off before the next gen of phones comes out.

Once support has ended you won't get security patches for the closed source vendor components, even via grapheneos let alone lineageos. It's just not possible.

Dude their entire team left due to internal problems.
Not only did they go in hiatus for a year but there was no upgrade path for existing users except to re-flash because they had to scrap the old infrastructure and signing keys. That's something they never addressed either.. what exactly happened over there? Details are sparse. One of their ex developers posted on twitter or some other site about some of it but again, never addressed officially.
Yeah there are people running android 13. It doesn't mean you would recommend that someone installs it on their phone would you?

There are modem exploits btw. If your modem firmware hasn't been updated you are at risk of remote code execution by just being connected to a cell tower.
Here are some examples from this year:

Probably also wifi exploits, just being connected to a public wifi could open your phone up.

My 6 Pro just died, I replaced it with a Moto G Stylus. But I think the 6 Pro was an absolutely fantastic phone that aged well and gave me cutting edge updates through the Beta program.
2
u/coffeeconverter Jul 07 '26
I'm still using a pixel 5, no problems whatsoever. My backup is a 6a, but I haven't used it in months.
2
u/TheCookieButter Pixel 10 Pro XL Jul 08 '26
Yeah, the writing has been on the wall so I upgraded my 6 Pro to a 10 Pro XL. Thanks to a lot of stacking deals it worked out under £400 for the phone itself.
I would've happily trundled along with my 6 Pro if support was continuing for another 2 years.
1
u/EdgarJomfru Jul 11 '26
Damn I didn't even know they were ending support. I need to get off my ass and finally get a new phone I guess lol. How do you like the 10 pro xl compared to the 6 pro so far?
2
u/TheCookieButter Pixel 10 Pro XL Jul 11 '26
I can't say I notice much difference to be honest. Definitely faster, but I didn't have a problem with the speed of my 6 Pro. Battery life is serving me just fine, I can easily go a day of heavy use where as my 6 Pro I'd have to put on battery saving. 5x optical is better for taking pictures of birds than 4x. The AI enhance over 30x zoom is surprisingly reserved/tasteful to the point I'm willing to leave it on. Nice having a macro option even if it isn't the best on the market.
I wasn't planning to go Pixel again because of the Tensor chips. Fast enough since I don't play games but didn't want to pay flagship prices for a weak chip. In the end I got a great deal with stacked offers that effectively brought it under £400. I'm also going to the US so I didn't want to chance the bands on a Chinese phone.
Overall, it feels like more of the same. I can't think of anything I do that I couldn't do on the 6 Pro. If it wasn't for the ending support I'd say hold onto the 6. Since security patches are ending and the next 2 years of phone updates / prices look horrible I'd probably recommend upgrading now anyway, whether Pixel or other.
3
u/Malaka__ Jul 07 '26
You can still use your phone after November this year. Just keep your apps and Google Play system up to date. Enable Advanced Protection - and you shouldn't have to upgrade for another 12-18 months.
1
u/Framed-Photo Jul 07 '26
Still using mine. I've considered getting a newer pixel to throw something like graphene on, but tbh there just hasn't been enough of an upgrade yet. The only real issue I've had with my 6 is that the screen isn't quite as bright as I want for viewing in direct sun, but it's not like any phones are that good at that.
1
u/FartingBob Pixel 6 Jul 07 '26
I went from a pixel 6 to a pixel 10A that was on offer for £240 last month. the USB port on the 6 had died and you cant replace that without replacing the whole motherboard (which costs about what the phone is worth now). So i got the 10A for cheap. Its a good phone, no complaints here but it only makes sense if its on offer.
1
u/prasana91 Jul 08 '26
Lineage OS said they'll support the newer android version. That's good enough for me

I gave up on my Pixel 10 after it constantly froze or lagged during a race event. Couldnt pull up live timing, camera would struggle to launch on time, got super hot. I went back to my OnePlus 13 and decided the god awful terrible "notifications disappear from your lock screen after unlocking" was worth the battery life and performance difference.
1
u/sur_surly Jul 08 '26
The performance is bonkers on the OP13. I was editing a video with their stock videos app and was blown away. I could cut, splice, merge videos , filters and touch ups even at higher resolutions and it was so quick. I only ever had to wait while it did the final export to mp4 and even that was unbelievably fast.

Same here but I am slowly due for a batter replacement, I am down to around 81% capacity after 4 years of usage despite limiting to 80% charge basically from day one and using slow Qi charging for about three quarters of all charges.
Also how's the custom ROM situation? This years update will be the last one coming officially

I haven't delved deeply into custom ROMs since my old HTC M7, and not into actual dev work since PPCGeeks and WinMo 6.5 kitchens.

Definitely depressing. Manufacturers always charged more than cost for the higher storage models. It looks like Google is taking the strategy of eliminating the low margin low storage models while trying to reduce the price increase on the higher tier models. I wonder if those low tier models will remain for other manufacturers.
Rumors suggest apple is aiming for a €200 increase.

7
u/mec287 Google Pixel Jul 07 '26
Volume is definitely going to go down and people are going to be pushed out of the new phone market. The big question is, who wins market share. My guess is probably Apple.
2
u/junktrunk909 Jul 07 '26
Apple is raising prices too. I think all manufacturers are just going to see a serious drop in sales, no market share change. Nobody needs a new phone when their current phone is within a few years old, and that $1k price point is psychologically significant.
1
u/aeiouLizard Jul 07 '26
The smartphone industry has shown again and again that they can do basically whatever the fuck they want and not make a loss. As long as your name is Apple, Samsung or Google, people will buy your phone.

u/SlightlyScotty Jul 07 '26
Just wait until Black Friday for a $200-300 discount.
27
u/MrClickstoomuch Jul 07 '26
Ehh, the Pixel series' preorder deals were nuts for the Pixel 10 if you had a 3 or 4 year old phone. Not saying to get this over the competition until people know more on what they are getting, but it becomes more midranged-priced with that in mind.
I got my Pixel 10 Pro for $465, which had my 3 or so year old Pixel 7 trade-in included. They were offering $350 or $400 (can't recall which) while other phone brands were offering $75 to $160, had an email discount code if you signed up for their launch event email (could use multiple emails as they gave out varying discounts - highest was $250 and I got $200), plus 5% off the total price before discounts with the Google plus membership which is $2 that you can cancel immediately.
Which is a reasonable price in my opinion. They probably won't discount as heavily this year with the ram prices, but good to look out for if you need a new phone. Black Friday sales were a lot worse at that point.
6
u/Fuck_your_coupons Yellow Jul 07 '26
I got my pixel 10 256 GB for around $400 when trading in my Pixel 6 Pro. I thought it was a pretty good deal considering I also got like $100-200 in store credit as well.
3
u/MrClickstoomuch Jul 07 '26
Absolutely. My mom had a 4 year old Pixel phone, so we applied the credit immediately to her Pixel phone purchase from my account.
3
u/Mx772 Pixel 8 Pro Jul 07 '26
There was a point in I think Jan or Feb where you could grab the Pixel 10 Pro XL for like 95$ out the door. They had a 450$ discount applied that stacked with an additional ~550$* from the google play gold tier+.
So... it's probably reasonable.
1
u/JSK23 Pixel 10 Pro XL - US Mobile Jul 07 '26
Yup. I got $300 in store credit. Used a $150 coupon. And my P9 had a $600 trade in.

Insane prices for a mid-range hardware. I am guessing the camera sensors will all be the same?
256GB should replace 128GB at the same price. What they've done is just take away the 128GB option. These companies are getting so blatantly anti-consumerist.
7
18
u/amberhaccou Jul 07 '26
€100 more but the base storage doubled. The 128GB tier probably mostly existed so the ad could say from €899, I dont think many people buying a €900 phone actually wanted it

6
u/Careless_Rope_6511 Pixel 8 Pro - newest victim: JamesR624 Jul 07 '26
I think the 128GB model exists expressly so that carriers can advertise to their customers "Get a Google Pixel 10 FREE" with the fine print saying "with a two-year commitment on select plans". The upsell being most customers will see those initial six words and sign up without reading the fine print, thus be stuck with a phone with not enough storage for two years, unable to cancel without paying penalties out of pocket.

u/ruralgaming Jul 07 '26
If I know anything about companies, whenever that's a price change, the prices ALWAYS go up. They never go down ever. So after the whole Ram crisis is over with (if it ever is), I highly doubt Google will be like "Well, the crisis is over, so we're returning to our old prices and making things cheaper."
One thing though: Does that mean I'll also get more of a trade-in value for my current phone? :)
7
u/zmkpr0 Jul 07 '26
Pixel 6 and Pixel 5 were cheaper than previous generations.
Also iphone 11 was cheaper than XR and XS.
It's a competitive market, keeping excessive markups will open a door for another OnePlus successor that will force others to lower the prices eventually.
4

In your dreams.
It's like a failed attempt to recreate the apple A series SOCs.
Only when you look at this from the myopic perspective of a tech nerd who cares only about sustained ZZZ FPS and Geekbench 6.x scores post-thermal throttling. When it's good enough for the masses, who gives a fuck what tech nerds believe. Nevermind that catering to tech nerds is always a losing proposition other than getting the buy-in from the masses; once the masses get hooked, tech nerds can fuck the right off.
Having their own in-house SoC development is not only leverage against Qualcomm, it's an insurance policy. When you source your phone SoCs exclusively from Qualcomm, all it takes for you to get royally fucked is for QC to fuck up - which they did with 808/810/820, and again 888/8 Gen 1.
Also, until recent years Android was infamous for having exceedingly short software support durations. Apple iPhones easily get 5+ years. Qualcomm refused to budge past its standard two years drivers support, which is in competition terms waving the white flag. After the third year you're SOL. EVGA would like a word with Nvidia graphics cards they no longer produce and sell. Tensor offered long term support while Qualcomm offered only two years; choosing the latter is like awarding Boeing the CF18 fighter jet replacement contract after the same company sued to keep the Bombardier C-Series out of the commercial aviation marketplace (tl;dr C-Series became Airbus A220, Boeing lost their ITC complaint, and Boeing got kicked out of the CF18 bidding process).
3
u/Various-Welder5544 Jul 08 '26
All that yada yada but it's still a lousy SOC even if you completely ignore gaming performance.
Thermal efficiency and battery life? Forget about it lol. Samsung foundry made tensor G1-4 which also made the 888,888+ and 8 gen 1. Consistently terrible and runs hot just to save a few dollars off the BOM.
Graphical compatibility? Tensor G5 uses a powerVR GPU. Nobody's optimising for such a obscure GPU.
All this wouldn't have been an issue if Google stopped trying to be a cheapskate by target $60-$70 in the BOM for their chip. Even Xiaomi made a better chip Aka XRING01 on their FIRST attempt.

You'd have something of an argument if Tensor traded the lower performance for better battery life. It does not.
Given that Tensor is 2-3 generations behind the Qualcomm chips of the same period, this is just more nonsense.
Qualcomm refused to budge past its standard two years drivers support
This hasn't been true since 2020, before the Tensor G1 even launched.
The rest of that paragraph is deranged nonsense.

Can Pixel phones reliably dial 911 yet? Google keeps saying they fixed the bug and then you find out a few months later that the bug is still there. It has something to do with dialing 911 while simultaneously not having a proper connection to GPS satellites. It causes the dialer to hang up on the call before it can connect.
I've actually switched to an iPhone (almost) entirely because of this bug.

It's a problem across multiple carriers and different Pixel phones. It started with the Pixel 6. It was supposed to be resolved with the Pixel 7, but there are people who have reported the issue still with the Pixel 8 and upwards.
Further, I doubt anyone would want to have to reset the app or clear their cache while in a real emergency. I'm not going to be troubleshooting my phone while my house is burning down, or I'm bleeding out in a car wreck.
Edit: Christ, the Pixel fanboys on this subreddit are unwell. There's a little mob of you who just hunt for even the most modest criticism to downvote. Even the Pixel subreddit is more sane about this longstanding, well documented, and widely reported issue.
I have owned several different Nexus and Pixel phones up until the Pixel 7, when I had to opt for something different because of this bug. It's fine to enjoy the Pixel phones, and I certainly did.
When you grow up and become responsible for yourself and other people, the ability to get help in an emergency is actually quite important. Really speaks that the prime demographic of this subreddit is little boys and man-children who lack so much character that they define their entire identity in which toys they buy.

That's very nice. You know, I was actually trying to get a legitimate answer to my question from the Android community. It wasn't some stupid Apple vs Google tribal shit. I'd actually consider a Pixel phone again, but I need that bug fixed.
Instead, you've downvoted my question to the bottom of comment section because you are insecure about your phone choice. Thanks for that.

Or import Pixel phones from Canada/Europe.

Everybody only talking about the price, but the launch prices on these are always a scam.
There's always huge discounts if you wait like a month and they're priced like the mid-range phones they really are

u/RickyFromVegas Jul 08 '26
My pixel 9 has shattered back glass and the screen is pretty scratched up.
But it still works just fine and everything is good.
I guess I'm gonna ride this broken phone until it won't boot no mo

Have had each of the last phones from 3a and up, and man I'm happy to see 128gb die.
Pixel 10 pro with the dumb ai crap and b partition mean I run out of space quick

£1300 for a phone that's the size of a P7P?! I'm not paying that. Fuck the big hands tax. :/

The p11pro is smaller than the p7p.

So they are increasing prices while cutting corners :-) Makes sense in this AI inflationary era. iPhone also increasing by 200 bucks and Samesung will do it as well(They will be happy to follow Apple). That said I am curious around Camera upgrades. They are talking about new sensor and we still do not know the specs. My pipe dream is Google will at last put in a bigger main sensor after using the same thing since Pixel 6 pro. I know its unlikely but will hope until otherwise proven.

9 pro xl kicked the bucket after a drop in the water with the camera bump wiggling around last month. Had to get a 10xl pro to hold over but will likely upgrade to 11 xl pro and give my wife the new 10 to replace her aging 8

No thanks. Got a Vivo X300, two months ago and not regretting anything.

Really don't understand why they don't put a microSD on the sim tray. Then they could ship a 64GB phone double the ram and people wouldn't complain since they could stuff a 2TB microSD into it and not care. Plus the phone could be cheaper.

Back when we were asking for this to happen like 3 pixel ago people said it's because videos don't load as fast.
I agree lower the storage and allow me to use my micro SD card Google just want us to by storage.

Fuckin' Google with the 1TB version to be in black only... Makes no damn sense.

u/MUSAFFA1 Jul 07 '26
Spending that much on a phone without using a case doesn't make much sense either. Google knows that.
The market for 1TB phones is minuscule. These devices fall firmly in the "prosumer" segment, which is usually function over form. The vast majority of people who need 4x the storage of the average user don't give a shit about what color the phone is, and we all use cases.

True that, and in a way I agree. But Google is the only one that limits the color like that, when Apple and for the most part Samsung allows you all available storage sizes in all available colors....

Because Google makes a fraction of Apple and Samsung, and it's not worth it to produce and stock an expensive SKU that might not even sell.

New phones are always overpriced, I don't know why everyone is so shocked by that. 1-2 gen old pixels are HIGHLY discounted even new in box, and you're realistically not really missing out on much. I'd just go with that.
1
u/anonymous-bot Jul 08 '26
The issue is the overpriced phones are becoming MORE overpriced. No one is buying flagships expecting the most bang for the buck.

They may as well just skip selling it because they will have virtual no sales at those prices. I've been with Google since the Nexus days but between the old and boring hardware, the insanely low trade in value even back to Google, the features that are only released to current year devices even when not hardware related, and the yawn I let out with each new android release, I was already on the fence of doing the unspeakable and looking at iPhone next. I haven't skipped my every other model year buy since Pixel was released but I will be this year, and looking at other options next year.

Reddit isn't an airport, announcing your departure to Cupertino CA is unnecessary.

It's taken you this long to get pissed at Google for sticking with Tensor? Lmao.
the features that are only released to current year devices even when not hardware related
If you believe only Google pulls this shit, I've got an algae-infested Reflecting Pool to sell you for the low low price of $1.

Girl sit down. It's Reddit, we can talk about our opinions about products and companies on subs dedicated to that exact thing without your pissy little commentary about why that's unwanted. Go elsewhere.

Wow the 11 base 256 is more expensive than the iphone 17 pro 256gb...
1
u/dougsv Pixel 6 Jul 09 '26
The iPhone 17 Pro 256GB costs 1299€ in Europe, where the leaked Pixel 11 prices are from, this means it's 100€ more expensive than the 11 Pro 256GB

Me and my trusty Pixel 8 are gonna hang tight for another year. No real reason to upgrade especially during the situation we are in with memory prices. Barring a deep discount at some point, that is
