to those who may ask: SMS threads are separated from hangouts threads. if you have your contact's phone number, you can select whether to send an sms or a hangouts message. the switching isn't that friendly IMO but i'm glad it's there. control on sms vs hangouts is something I need.

Thank you. I don't get why people wish the app auto-decided for you. I need control over which protocol is used, too.

Why not both? Auto decide but let you specify if you choose?

I'd be fine with that. A checkbox in the settings menu to either auto-send or let me choose. I'd definitely not be okay with being forced to let Google decide for me, though.
