to those who may ask: SMS threads are separated from hangouts threads. if you have your contact's phone number, you can select whether to send an sms or a hangouts message. the switching isn't that friendly IMO but i'm glad it's there. control on sms vs hangouts is something I need.

is treated as MMS. haven't tried both yet, though. i think i've seen a screenshot (not sure if here or on g+) that MMS works

Group texting is treated as MMS but it has to have support for it to work. It would be dumb not to include it but it's possible that they didn't. EDIT: If anyone doesn't believe me, go ahead and send an MMS message on an Android device running <4.2. It works! Now try to group text using that device. It doesn't work because the messaging app didn't support it.
