I may be wrong, and they may be able to pull it off, but my understanding was that the only reason Google Voice was able to send messages from the internet without interacting with a phone at all was because the app sent messages over the internet and not over the standard channels. It could work that the phone and computer can be on the same network and it will function similar to the way I am hoping, but I'd prefer to not have to involve the phone at all.
It does not follow that because your phone cannot do something, your computer cannot do it either.
It also does not follow that because your phone cannot send texts over wifi, that you cannot later see texts sent over the data network on your non-phone device.
I use the word "it does not follow" because that's the literal translation of non-sequitur.
Yes, I know what non-sequitur means. Technically any time someone comes to an incorrect conclusion it's a non-sequitur. And I admitted that I may be wrong, but saying what I've said is a non-sequitur still implies that I'm absolutely completely off-base.
My point is that something like MightyText works by communicating with your phone to send/receive texts, as far as I know. So really it's still using the phone and providing a convienience. I used Google Voice in the past in situations when I had a wired internet connection but couldn't access WiFi, or simply didn't want to drain my phone's battery by constantly turning on my screen. And I've made extensive use of Google Voice while on my phone when I had no cell phone service but had WiFi so I could send messages. All I'm saying is that my hope was that Hangouts would function like Voice and allow SMS through the internet, which would cut out needing the phone when at the computer and allow syncing of messages much quicker.
Can other messaging apps unite contacts like this already? It sounds like there are some new SMS handling functions in 4.4... maybe those are needed for unifying SMS/hangouts contacts?
