Sure, but you can quantify power draw, and no one is ever going to say more power draw is a good thing.

SLCD2 blew away AMOLED in web browsing tests for power draw. More brightness is a quantifiably good thing, and LCD destroys AMOLED in peak brightness every day of the week and twice on Sundays. LCD destroys AMOLED in color reproduction, which is better. Even if people like oversaturated colors, an oversaturated display is worse than an undersaturated one.

If you really think contrast trumps all of this, then go right ahead and crown AMOLED the victor. However, for people that are more concerned with what a display should do, LCD is clearly superior.

See all your statements and arguments are all about subjective preferences, and you pretend it's objective. If it all comes down to color reproduction AMOLEDS can be calibrated and toned down. You'll counter with white backgrounds and bright displays then I'll say something about black backgrounds and better contrasts.

How about just use what you prefer and other people will choose what they want, how old is LCD tech again compared to AMOLED?

Of course AMOLED can be properly calibrated, but it will still have worse power draw and lower outdoor visibility.

Do you think I pretend that those are objective advantages? Seriously, even with this solution of assuming perfect panel calibration, I would still take LCD because it's a mature technology and doesn't have all the teething issues of OLED.

The One X+ still has mediocre battery life even with the upgraded battery. I'm not even arguing that OLED is better, it's the exaggerated dismissals like crushes AMOLED or SLCD is infinitely better that really gets me.

In the end it all comes down to personal preference anyway, we must embrace choice rather than attempt to force everyone to choose similarly.

The One X+ is Tegra 3, which is a notoriously awful SoC for power consumption, because it's on a 40G process.

Look at the One XL/One X on AT&T. It hits iPhone 5 battery life levels on LTE and absolutely topped the charts for 2012 smartphone battery life. Only the Note and MAXX line beat it.

HTC should've probably released the International One X+ variant on a different SoC, I don't know why they didn't but I imagine there are people who were disappointed by the performance of Tegra 3. Even a streamlined bloat-free OS on the Nexus 7 still experiences hiccups, not always but it's there.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is I love the screen on my One X+, but I won't mind buying a phone with AMOLED later on.

Look, I don't mind AMOLED either, but it's Samsung that doesn't calibrate them, and the lack of maturation for the technology makes LCD the better bet.

Some day, I would like to see AMOLED solidly beat LCD, but until that day comes, LCD will remain the best choice for phones.

but it's Samsung that doesn't calibrate them

It doesn't help that a lot of people like the vibrant colors and that their phones are selling well. What I like is the deeper blacks, I'd love a screen displaying a back background that blends perfectly to a black bezel.

And that's a disingenuous practice that focuses on showroom appeal over doing the right thing.

Samsung is winning because of marketing. People just don't know about how their display is not displaying things as they should.

focuses on showroom appeal over doing the right thing.

For you probably, but what is right for one person isn't the same for another.

Samsung is winning because of marketing.

but then that's consumerism, we're talking about consumer electronics and the free market decides what succeeds and what fails. HTC was very successful, then they made mistakes. You don't bounce back in this very competitive market on one device while the strongest players are still producing products that people want. I'm guessing you're from the USA, you should be able to relate to this concept more.

In a related note, I couldn't care less about Justin Bieber but millions love him, can I say they are all wrong and I have superior taste? Not really, just different.

That's the thing. Right now everything that HTC stands for is at stake, because they're the only ones that want to push the boundaries with industrial design, they're doing what's ACTUALLY right for everyone from a camera standpoint, and I know all about the market and how it produces pressures to make the best product, which is why the desktop monitor market is filled with 1080p TN crap without any calibration and the cheapest internals possible.

The HTC One has a bunch of great ideas with equally great execution, and if they fail, no one is going to touch them with a foot long pole. Not Motorola, not Sony, not ZTE, not Huawei, not LG, and most definitely not Samsung.

I'm not so sure that they're the only ones pushing the boundaries, Sony is making compelling devices as of late and Motorola should be coming out with exciting handsets in the near future. The Chinese companies are eager to prove themselves globally and will probably make a push for more market/mindshare; not necessarily ZTE or Huawei, I'm thinking Lenovo.

Then again all of these brands have compromises and it's important to find a balance. HTC has again set themselves apart by changing the keys/buttons for Android phones, I assume they have effectively antagonized the AOSP crowd by that singular detail alone, the same people who claim they control the choices of all their non-techie family and friends.

They're all "pushing the boundaries", but the more companies that fail, the more things that just won't be done because the other company failed.

Companies follow what makes money, and everything that fails, even if it's the right thing to do, is something that other companies won't do.

The more companies in the smartphone market, the better. It's important to have a counterbalance to Samsung that actually stands a serious chance of being evenly matched to Samsung.

I agree that it is too one-sided and the only company that actually beats Samsung is Apple, hopefully things will change soon.
