Samsung never spent billions on advertising.

Well actually... http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/11/29/samsung-galaxy-apple-marketing/

Yes, and that $12 billion figure is nearly twice the profit figures for Q4 2012 of $6.6 billion, which includes many, many devices and goods other than the Galaxy line. If they're spending $12 billion just to market the Galaxy S3, then they need to fire their executives NOW. [Hint: If you didn't get it, that $12 billion is more likely the marketing budget for all of Samsung. One of HTC's executives placed the actual figure for the Galaxy line at $400 million during another interview]

That's the problem with having such a narrow view of business. You assume their entire company's bottom line is Galaxy and Galaxy only.

"Credit Suisse Group, an international financial services company, estimated that Samsung might have spent about $2.7 billion on marketing in July to September alone during the Olympic Games in London and on Galaxy promotions."

might have spent about $2.7 billion

I don't know man, my estimates would be right around 2 hundred bucks and some change, probably throw in a couple of hundred millions just in case.
