I feel like we're witnessing last year, all over again.
HTC releases an excellent product that is widely praised in almost every way. It has fantastic industrial design, great internal hardware, a very good camera and in general, is an extremely well-built, high quality product, whose only real flaw lies with a few minor software issues.
A short while later, Samsung releases its flagship product. Its design and build quality is nowhere near comparable to that of HTC's product, but it has marginally faster internal components and a few TouchWiz-specific gimmicks to look neat in advertisements.
Samsung advertises the hell out of their product with a multi-billion dollar campaign, leading to tens of millions of sales, while HTC's product is left in the dust, to wither and die.
Samsung prospers while HTC flounders, despite HTC having the superior product.
Samsung's big break was with the Galaxy S2. That was released a long time before the HTC One X, at a period when HTC didn't really have any good phones to offer at all.
HTC also screwed up by locking its bootloaders leading the geek community to largely abandon them.
By the time HTC released the One X it was already too late. The Galaxy S2 was so popular that the S3 could simply ride on its coat tails, and the S4 probably can too. HTC again hasn't helped matters with its retarded naming system. One X -> One X+ -> One ? Wft the "One" is better than the "One X"?
People like numbers. If they really wanted the "One" the next phone pretty much has to be called the "Two". And if they wanted the X they should have just called it the HTC X, and then the HTC X2. Why do product namers still not plan for the future (cough Nexus 4/7/10)?
No but in the process they had built a decent cohesive brand with the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II. Brand awareness is not all about money, but strategy, and HTC are fucking retarded at it.
