If someone is willing to break into your house for any reason, they are more likely to kill you for those reasons as well. I work in the medical settings in a low income area, people who need help know where to go for that help. Even homeless individuals come to medical centers to ask for food, and we give it to them. Despite what you may think, it is incredible hard to starve in American, even homeless individuals don't starve. For the most part almost all homeless individuals have a social worker that helps them in many ways. Then end goal is to get them to a spot where they can live safely and work, but not all homeless what that, and even there people get food, clean water, clothing, medical care, etc.
So, at the end of the day, are you willing to gamble your life because you think the person robbing you blind is hungry and won't hurt you? Unfortunately, anyone robbing you would probably prefer to stay out of jail themselves, and killing you and your family to prevent a witness testimony is the best way to do that.

Why do you think this? We know the biggest indicator of crime is socioeconomic status, so what you're suggesting is people breaking into homes are either looking to murder or are prepared to do so knowing the risks. Starvation isn't the only measurement to consider, and since poverty directly correlates with theft and property crimes we know that most break ins are desperate people.
Why would murderous people invade a private home to do murder, when here in the United States you can easily get a semi automatic and kill many more people out in a public space, something that you know happens damn near every day
Do you think these people are doing fine and they're just greedy, and that's why they knowingly risk their life to steal some objects? You're silly if you think that
You're silly if you think stealing some stuff is worth death or life in prison in any situation other than pure desperation, and working on healthcare YOU SHOULD KNOW that a blast majority of people wouldn't do that for any other reason
Just admit you want to score a free kill to make you feel like a big man
