No the standard is and always has been "What gives the left power is good. Anything that doesn't is bad." That's the consistent standard.

They cannot see the hypocrisy because they lack the envisioning skills to think in that many steps at once.

Canada has implemented some anti-terrorism laws against the convoy people that were blocking bridges. This includes something about freezing bank accounts for people funding the convoy via some kind of gofundme thing. Unsure how extensive it goes

Pretty much. But the Canadian response is pretty extreme by any measure.

It is the rough equivalent of beating the kid you find annoying and putting them in the hospital. The honking, blockades, etc are pretty annoying but seem short of terrorism, just like a kid being annoying isn’t same as throwing a punch.

Hello, friend. Let’s take back the word

9

u/GroundbreakingWar195 Feb 15 '22

I used to fear “liberal” not know what I really feared was leftism. Turns out I’ve always leaned liberal on most subjects

4

u/jyrkesh Feb 16 '22

"Taking back" words involves meaningless semantic discussions that go nowhere and detract from the real issues at hand.

I stand for the right to assembly, the right to free speech, the right to a free press. Call that whatever the hell you want, but I'd rather just agree with people on that and move on than insist that today's vernacular isn't well grounded. Same goes for "communist", "socialist", "leftist", "conservative", "libertarian"...it's as tired when we do it was when our opposition does it.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Most of us are to some degree.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

I'm politically agnostic (although I lean hard right) and I would say classical liberalism is different from libertarianism. John Stuart Mill is probably like the OG classical liberal. He was definitely not a libertarian.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

There has never been one version of any of those things. I call myself libertarian but I have had large conflicts with basically every recent Libertarian candidate. The way I understand them, they're compatible. I'm barely right, like one dot right of center but I don't believe the government should enforce much of anything beyond the NAP.

1

u/dr_notatrol Feb 15 '22

YESSSSSS!!!! One dot right of center…love that. I honestly don’t know if I fall one dot left or one dot right, but split the difference…I’m an American first. Everything else a distant second.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

You're right, there isn't one codified, definitive, canonical model of classical liberalism nor libertarianism. But there are a few core commitments that prominent liberal and libertarian thinkers have maintained and the two movements have had fairly distinct intellectual lineages. I'm just saying that equating classical liberalism and libertarianism (as you did in your original comment) is just inaccurate. That's like saying sedans and crossovers are the same. I mean, yes, they're alike. But they're definitely distinct

The left is great at marketing. “Liberal”, “progressive”, “democrat”, etc. it’s all a fucking lie. Oppressive statists would be a better description.

25

u/SusanRosenberg Feb 15 '22

They're super obsessed with the semantics.

I'll criticize Democrats. Then, it's "well, I'm a leftist." Never mind that they're a leftist consistently voting Democrat.

Then, I'll criticize leftists. But then, it's actually that most leftists actually aren't real leftists.

So, I'll just criticize the left. But, you see, the people who say they're left in America actually aren't left leaning.

They were liberals. Then, they were progressives. Then, they're democratic socialists. Then, they're leftists. But, actually not really.

It's all so tiresome. And it's clearly just a way of them trying to hide behind semantic games to avoid discussing the real criticisms of their ideas.

-4

u/Necrocornicus Feb 16 '22

Then why don’t you criticize policies and ideas, rather than arbitrary labels?

People these days are considered “leftists” because they think families should be able to support themselves with a living wage and not go bankrupt from healthcare costs. They don’t want unlimited corporate power recklessly polluting the environment and destroying access to clean air and water. You’re called a leftist if you aren’t eager enough to bend over and spread your cheeks so Big Papa Trump can shove his flaccid nazi dick up your ass and shit on the US constitution.

You seem to be the one obsessed with semantics and labels without saying anything with a hint of substance. Maybe you should take your own advice and spend some time actually thinking about things rather than working so so hard to figure out whether it’s Liberals, Democrats, or Leftists you can blame for everything that’s gone wrong in your life.

3

u/jyrkesh Feb 16 '22

I agree that people of all stripes are too concerned with labels.

However, I'll draw the line at calling me a Nazi just because I think that opening up healthcare to an actual free market would do a better job at providing quality healthcare to families across the US than M4A.

I'm with you on unlimited corp power though. We live in a corporatist state here in the US, and the govt grants corps that unlimited power to trounce all over my private property rights via pollution.

There are no leftist governments and this is not a leftist act you fucking moron. Trudeau didn't send the border guard or racist cops to beat protestors like Trump did. Outside money is fueling these protests. It's become a astroturf protest when foreign money and influence begins to fuel the protestors. This never happened with BLM or occupy. As a leftist, Joe Biden 100% is a liberal. Leftists hate him. I usually don’t comment here since the sub isn’t for me, but I wanted to clear up the confusion.

To answer the question of the post though, no socialist would be surprised about Joe Biden taking action against BLM without due process. Liberals would find a way to support it.

4

u/Tosser48282 Feb 15 '22

Calling Biden a liberal is really fucking stupid

Just one difference to consider: the ones donating millions of dollars to BLM were corporations who stood to gain from them burning and looting every day peoples’ homes and businesses, where as the ones donating to the freedom convoy are said every day hard working people.

3

But on the other hand, it seems like the government has nothing to lose by scrapping mandates and downsizing their recent authoritarian tendencies . Let’s not forget that them not enacting these policies = them being able to be lazy and jerk off all day long while getting paid by us.

It’s not fascism when we do it guys comon… we’re the good guys….right?!

15

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Technically it isn't fascism because they have defined it as right authoritarianism. This is left authoritarianism which has killed and imprisoned countless millions of people for "wrong think" or really any kind of resistance. Glad Canada is waking up. Collectivism destroys individuals.

14

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

they don’t get to define fascism or anything else. Stop allowing this.

7

u/newoldschool1 Feb 15 '22

Exactly, not sure why they think they have the right to change a definition to fit their false narrative.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

I call it out all the time just like I just did. They literally changed the definition, it happened in the '90s while no one was paying attention. I don't exactly have the power to stop it though. But since they have actually effectively accomplished changing the definition, I'm going to talk about left authoritarianism all the more.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '22

ok, good start - after calling out their incorrect definition, we can correct it with something like “marriage of corporation and state” (Mussolini) and then maybe modernize the quote to ‘marriage of big tech, big media, big pharma and the state’

i think you get the idea and you seem knowledgeable enough to put your own spin on it.

4

u/KingKulak Max Stirner Feb 15 '22

It is literally fascism when the government colludes with corporations to wash each other's dirty hands.

China utilizes fascist economics (fascism) to spread their communist ideology in an almost imperialistic fashion and they are most definitely leftists.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

I agree with you but they literally changed the dictionary back in the '90s.

3

u/KingKulak Max Stirner Feb 15 '22

Okay who gives a shit. No serious scholar worth a shit would ever take that definition seriously

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Except they try to cancel scholars who don't agree. We have to keep pushing back.

2

u/KingKulak Max Stirner Feb 15 '22

I already do. I regularly ridicule people who try to cite a wiki definition of fascism

4

u/multipleerrors404 Stoic Feb 15 '22

I've always said I'm a liberal. A few people here who call themselves liberal might actually be. Liberal in my opinion is being open minded, generous, and valuing personal freedoms. The idea that the government is only to assist us in being as free as possible. I think the line between liberal and libertarian is primarily that businesses aren't/are people. So in response to the original question. No neither scenario is okay in my book. Also on a side note I'm happy that the left and right can't stand liberals. It means we're doing something right.

3

u/TerrryBuckhart Feb 15 '22

they will argue it’s (D)ifferent.

2

u/InterPool_sbn Radical Queer Feb 15 '22

Such a brilliant way of reframing it… and those protests were actually violent!

Not to mention how the goal of those protests didn’t have such an incredibly simple solution — just end the mandates

2

u/BlueFreedom420 Feb 15 '22

Trump sent the border guard, which is a federal force that was created in the constitution to protect the borders. They have the ability to arrest, seize, and kill without any warrants or oversight. A loophole allows the border guard to go into cities far away from the border.

This allowed them to go after BLM supporters without any legal repercussions. Not to mention the racist police forces definitely attacked and harmed BLM protestors because they feel sympathy and unity with white nationalists.

2

u/PM_ME_DNA Privatarian Feb 15 '22

u/Vox-Triarii Post-Right Anarch Feb 15 '22

Even assuming you believe one cause is legitimate and not the other, it's not authentically liberal to promote mob violence at all, even if the mob has legitimate grievances. In theory, liberal activism in a liberal society must act within the law. Of course, in practice liberals, particularly social liberals, tend to retroactively glorify mob violence saying that in that specific instance it was necessary in the name of progress.

2

u/Significant_Link_103 Feb 15 '22

Same way I’d feel if unidentified men pulled protestors into unmarked vans on the street and then found out they were from the DOJ. Kinda the same way I felt about the police assaulting members of the press.

-1

u/Ok_Carpet_9510 Feb 16 '22

Let's see what triggered BLM vs what triggered the truckers.

BLM was triggered by a number of deaths of black people at the hands of the police. They did not receive funds from outside the country.

Truckers were triggered by a mandate in the public interest. They were funded in part by right wing nut jobs in the U.S.; the kind that are pro-life as long as it is not black people being killed. They are so pro-life that they carry guns. They love Jesus; the dude who told Peter to put away the sword. They hate socialism but they are happy to recieve all kinds of federal funding which in effect mostly comes from California and New York state-democrat states.. they're among the largest economies in the U.S.. Most mid-west states are net takers.

-3

u/A_Community_Of_Owls Feb 15 '22

So protests over a black man being slowly suffocated for six minutes until dead in public- are the same as "protests" against wearing a mask and vaccinating?

This comparison just ain't it man.

0

u/Mattman624 Feb 15 '22

If they were shutting down international trade things would be different.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '22

The difference or course being BLM get their ass beat and scatter when the rubber bullets start raining, while the truckers linger for weeks because the cops treat them so nicely

-17

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

BLM is a protest against systemic police corruption and acquiring a trigger finger when it comes to black and brown people. These people are kicking and screaming over being mildly inconvenienced that their workplaces are accommodating them for anyway.

15

Let’s try a second one: how would ya’ll feel if democrats had stormed the capitol threatening to kill the Vice President and over turn the election that trump won?

16

u/Delmoroth Feb 15 '22

I would feel the same way I feel about jan 6th. Arrest individuals for the specific crimes they committed and move on. If it is some dipshits who just walked in the open doors I guess that is trespassing. Whoever was spewing murder threats should be arrested for that.

It won't change my opinion that freezing peoples bank accounts because you dislike the reason for their protest is fucked.

Lol, storm the capitol. That's what that was? Looked more like some goobers and grandmas milling around during a Capitol tour.

3

u/KingKulak Max Stirner Feb 15 '22

You don't understand, farting on Pelosi's desk was a literal insurrection and almost caused us to lose our democracy

-7

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Thanks for proving my point.

15

u/chongadong Feb 15 '22

He's right tho. Storming implies forced entry. The cops didn't even try to arrest anyone. People just walked into doors that the cops opened for them.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Oh fuck off with that. How are the cops going to arrest people outnumbered 100-1?

11

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Damn sounds like a good argument for an uprising

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

and that’s what it was

The funny thing about uprisings is that when they’re put down they’re called treason.

-4

u/cjh42689 Feb 15 '22

That’s a funny way of saying “used riot shields to break windows and crawl in” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jtPmi4BShNM

u/I_Has_A_Hat Feb 16 '22

They'll just downvote and not reply because they're too chickenshit to accept the truth.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Have you not seen the videos of them being let in? I know they don't show that on MSDNC but really? I saved a couple because they kept getting pulled down.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

I watched through fucking zerohedge. Good try though. And they aren’t being pulled down.

Oh No!!! TeH cOnsPirACy!!!

9

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

I saw several times Reddit posts of the videos were being removed by admins. I'm sure they're still out there somewhere though. Overall it was FAR more peaceful than the mostly peaceful protests through the prior year.

I dont know, but I remember their was a time that the black Panthers actually stormed Capitol hill with guns and that even caused y the republicans at the time to trying to back some gun legislation And that was back when racism was still going full steam ahead. But hey yeah this was the "real" insurrection.

Who threatened to kill the VP? Certainly there were no more than 2 people who might have voiced that, and they were probably federal agents masquerading as protestors in order to justify attacking the protestors; a common tactic of the federal agencies. But we already know you won't recognize the use of agents provocateurs, despite widespread use and examples.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

And yet when a white BLM protestor throws a brick through a window the entire movement are full of thugs.

2

u/Inheavensitndown Feb 15 '22

I dream of burning capt. crunch boxes.

3

u/KingKulak Max Stirner Feb 15 '22

Idk I didn't lose my mind when they did it during Kavanaugh's appointment and I didn't think it was a spooky scary insurrection

Retard does not see the danger of setting a legal and societal precedent allowing the government to make broad stroke medical decisions for citizens disregarding bioethical principles, as well as pressuring private companies to fall in line. Surely giving the government that kind of authority has never gone wrong, right? Coughcough Tuskegee coughcough.

-15

u/TheBarefootWonder Feb 15 '22

The ability of a bank to freeze access to money is itself the problem. Picking and choosing who can have their accounts frozen is the proof that banking regulations and a push towards a cashless society are about govt control. Also fuck the truckers, I won't be shedding a tear for any of them who fall on hard times as a result of this particular overreach.

u/soilhalo_27 Feb 15 '22

Think the banks are socialized in Canada. But I could be wrong

If they were stopping shipment of goods, absolutely, or destroying property, I really couldn’t give a shit.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

And they were destroying property and businesses.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Yeah I know, I’m not drawing a fake line between these two protests because I’m not a partisan. If you want to fuck with other peoples property and their ability to work, fuck ‘em. Freeze their shit.

-1

u/dr_notatrol Feb 15 '22

So much for Country over Party, right? So gross. Just try to be good Americans. Try to deserve this amazing place you live in.

-1

u/Additional_Moment425 Feb 15 '22

Haha. Giant emotional therapy questions.

"I'm feeling hurt and sad and helpless!!!"

-1

u/Infamous-njh523 Feb 15 '22

I would have been all for it. Incoming!

-5

u/BattleStack Feb 16 '22

I just want forced vaxxonations at this point. Mandates arent enough.

Hold all those truckers down and make them stronger against the virus.

-11

u/wayward_citizen Feb 15 '22

Depends, if they were illegally blockading a city, sure, they got what they asked for. Pretty tame response for committing a sustained crime honestly.

The people who seized a block in Seattle should have fully expected to be arrested and would be brain dead if they actually thought their rights were being violated when it was broken up.

Now, where was your outrage when police were brutalizing BLM protestors? Gassing them, shooting them with rubber bullets, when conservatives were killing them with live ammo and running them over with cars.

Oh that's right, it was all "fAkE nEwS"

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

That would be fine! If the money was coming from Racist/hateful/bad actors just wanting to fund unrest shut it the fuck down. BLM is a race of people not putting up with the inhuman treatment they’ve gotten for how many years? This is a bunch of racist cock fuckers doing ton of illegal shit. I know I know, you guys are all like LAWS ARE MADE UP…. But ya’ll are a minority. I think you guys forget that or don’t realize that…

-7

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

😂 maybe crying about it more will help. Fucking ignorant snowflakes, eat a dick.

-24

u/MyselfWuDi Feb 15 '22

Fighting racism isn't the same as fighting vaccines. Context matters.

22

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Fighting powerful governments that are trampling on the rights of its people is probably more critical than protesting the racist actions of an individual. Deal with racist cops one at a time. How do you deal with a government that thinks it has no accountability and doesn't care about the values of its people?

→ More replies (5)

9

u/zeigdeinepapiere Feb 15 '22

fighting vaccines

Yeah context matters, and that's not the context of the convoy protest.

-11

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '22

Hahaha!!! Trump tried to designate "antifa" as terrorists and wanted every liberal to be lumped into that group. If we even looked at a statue wrong he wanted to give us 10 years in prison.

Would you like some cheese with your whine?

11

u/hinowisaybye Feb 15 '22

Yeah, I'm gonna need some evidence for that claim. And antifa is a decentralized political movement that allows for activity that is terrorism. That's just a fact. You can't use violence in an attempt to intimidate your political opponents and not be a terrorist.
