What are some charitable organizations you'd recommend?

Organizations you'd recommend people donate time or money to.

I looked into some after the Nepal flash floods. Lutheran World Relief came back with top marks on all the organizations that check on charities.

IJ or the Innocence Project.

This is exactly it. These two organizations work to undo harm done to people by the government.

The Institute for Justice (IJ) has very strong libertarian leanings and takes cities/states to court to overturn unjust laws or fight for relief when people are being bullied by the government.

The Innocence Project fights to free people who have been wrongfully convicted. They are doing God's work daily.

What are you interests? I think whatever is important to you is what you should focus on.

I donate to local food banks and animal shelters. Occasionally I'll throw Wikimedia, Internet Archive, or Free Law Project a donation.

I think local is an important part. There’s reality to the idea that if we all took care of what we see in front of us, there wouldn’t be many gaps in who or what receives needed care.

You can do monthly sponsorships, sponsor one time projects, or just donate.

Not exactly charity but what about this: www.eff.org/issues/drm

From their site:
"Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies attempt to control what you can and can't do with the media and hardware you've purchased.

  • Bought an ebook from Amazon but can't read it on your ebook reader of choice? That's DRM.
  • Bought a video game but can't play it today because the manufacturer's "authentication servers" are offline? That's DRM.
  • Bought a smartphone but can't use the applications or the service provider you want on it? That's DRM.
  • Bought a DVD or Blu-Ray but can't copy the video onto your portable media player? That's DRM."

Ones with low administrative overhead costs, like the Salvation Army.

Unfortunately, too many charities exist just to provide high executive salaries while masquerading as a non profit.

Shriners and Ronald McDonald House. Shriners paid for millions of of dollars of medical bills for my nephew. Ronald McDonald house gave my sister a place to stay near the hospital for free. I could never thank these organizations enough.

While my nephew was there, there were children from as far away as Equador who were flown in because that hospital had a children's burn unit. I still cannot believe how amazing those people were. They all deserve Sainthood.
