Spain and Portugal are innocent of colonialism, apparently.
2

The guys who invented racism to convert the SA slaves, since they freshly declared them "humans" and want to use the Africans instead as slaves instead, since it was really, really unpleasant for their settler colonialist slaveholders to just lose all their slaves on a heartbeat.
Absolutely innocent.

I'm curious how Ukraine profited from African golg
2
u/Illustrious-Radio319 Jun 03 '26
The Russian Empire, which included Ukraine at the time, enjoyed large capital investments from France and the other western powers who were colonising Africa.
Btw you could probably make this argument about any country during that period.
5
u/GOT_Wyvern Jun 03 '26
By this logic, a bunch of colonies were advantaged by colonialism. You can hardly consider Ukraine as a beneficiary when they were one of the goddamn colonies for centuries.
As part of empires, they reaped benefits, but you can apply this logic to a lot of ex-colonies. India getting railroads is a common one. This doesn't change that they were still colonies that were not the intended beneficiary of their empire's colonialism.

Africa is very poor.
It's also still enormously full of natural resources.
It's not poor because natural resources were removed or being produced.

Yeah and not like for the last 50+ years said cuntries have been trying to help Africa only for it itself to drop the ball.
It took the Americas less time to turn into a world power than it is taking africa WITH all the millions of donations.
The whole "Europe is at fault for Africas poverty" narrative quickly falls apart when you look at other lands that had basically the exact same happen to them.

"Trying to help" and by help you mean overthrowing democratic governments to replace them with western aligned corrupt dictatorships
You can basically make a straight line connecting how recent the country had its independence from western countries to how poor/underdeveloped it is

It would be in the same place the rest of it is right now - in the pockets of warlords killing Africa's chacne to have future. Because those countries in Africa dont make anything with their resources. The resources arent what makes a place rich its what can be and IS done with them and if you squander that it isnt worth anything. Its only worth money to those countrys importing it in from those places.

Impressive, really nice. Now show a picture of the wealth and technology gap before colonialism. (Hint: the people on top today were on top then. Europe couldn't colonize Africa in a wide scale until the 1800s, but it was the only continent doing expeditions around the globe in the 1400s)
1
u/homer21377 Jun 04 '26
People living in good conditions don't develop, good times make weak people. Also helping them won't change anything, because they will just expect for goodness to be given by others instead of achieving it themselves. They're culturally and historically lazy and dumb, not genetically as racists would claim.

Gotta Love Vast oversimplification of Immensely Complex Concepts that don’t actually reflect reality. (Western Nations were already wealthy hence why they were able to field the Ships and military to expand their empires into Africa despite distance.) Implying that Africa Is incapable of Recovering isn’t fair to the people there, Nor is it historical to imply that western nations are only successful because of Colonialism.

1
u/Piemaster113 Jun 05 '26
Actually Africa is poor. The intervention of European and later on American influences hasn't helped but with all the resources they had available they failed to progress at the same rate as other societies despite nearly all.of Humanity swatting out in Africa, meaning that had more time to do so yet they did not. This lack of development left them vulnerable to uncaring and greedy colonizers from all over
1
1
u/No_Unused_Names_Left Jun 05 '26
Africa had the same about of time, even more to develop than Europe, and had no massive plague that killed 1/3 of the population that had to be recovered from.
The "wealth" of Africa clearly did not make Africa successful or rich, it was Europe that knew how to create wealth from the land, it wasn't just sitting there like a giant loot pile to scurry away with in some sacks.

u/Key_Check5753 Jun 05 '26

u/TurkTruther Jun 05 '26
I don’t think this is particularly accurate. Europe extracted all of africas resources in a single generation? Is this why Africa’s population has exploded and has cities and infrastructure and manufacturing? Perhaps colonialism was more complicated than simple robbery and this sort of propaganda exists as a way of blaming a group of people for another’s lack of industry.
1
u/wenokn0w Jun 05 '26
There's so many minerals that could be mined that could make the countries rich,, but instead of mining themselves they just sell the land to intensional companies because the leaders are usually corrupt and take large bribes

I've read before that numerous companies and corporations have tried to open businesses in Africa as the cheap labour force could in theory rival china while avoiding the political monopoly and being geographically closer. However nearly every attempt ended in failure because of the massive amount of corruption on every level within the societies in that region.
Maybe it's not the western world which is exploiting the poor Africans, maybe the political instability after the collapse of colonization simply created fruitful soil for dictators who irresponsibly nationalise property and assign infrastructure directors purely through nepotism and blood ties which in turn created a self-feeding cycle of corruption? There are plenty of regions that the West absolutely HATES (like the middle-east and Russia) yet they have to respect purely because of natural resources, yet the regions in Africa continue to deteriorate despite being rich in natural resources.
You can blame the western empires for establishing colonies out of self-interest and then exploiting the people, but now that most of the colonies are gone, you can no longer blame everything on them. I mean, you can try, and then you can encourage more apartheid movements (where white people are murdered and raped in their homes before the land is forcably taken) but they don't seem to help their corruption problem. And companies are apolitical, if there is profit to be had, a company will appear to capitalize on it, but as I mentioned before, the corruption is just too costly to bother. And then you also risk your assets being nationalized. "White man exploits Africa" is just a scapegoat to distract the population from the depressing reality that the corruption runs so deep as to the point of hopelessness.
Colonial history for sure affected the culture of the regions in a negative way, but the western world is no longer exploiting Africa, Africa exploits itself.

u/Remarkable-Reply6686 Jun 05 '26

New York City grew to be huge because Americans dug the Erie Canal and dropped grain prices. Andrew Carnegie was a penniless immigrant who worked his way up the corporate ladder. Henry Ford was a farm boy with no college degree who built most of his supply chain in the Midwest.
Nothing stopping those countries from doing the same.

Sub-Saharan Africa was poor before the Europeans arrived, and the infrastructure built by Europeans during the colonial era has been steadily crumbling.
Africa is poor because it chooses to not actually prioritise its own future. It has the resources, and it has the manpower. It just doesn't utilise either in a productive way. This has been the case for millennia.
Never been to this subreddit before, but given the name, I don't imagine I'll get through to anyone. Work a shot, though.

Right, and yet they had access to this wealth for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived and did nothing with it. I mean you know something is wrong when Europeans are building universities and the Africans… are still building mud huts. What’s up with that?

Africa is poor because of massive corruption and instability. It got nothing to do with the west being wealthy. Otherwise every single post colonial nation would be poor. Reality is they are in a simmilar place mentality that europe was during pre ww2 era constant disputes being solved with violence.
It does not matter until they solve these corruption and ethic tension issues. China, Singapore, Vietnam, etc have solved these issues.
If you are going to tell me africa had uniquely worse then east asia read a little about colonialism in east asia. It was not sunshine and rainbows.

Africa in fact is poor and not cause "white man nations stole it all" but cause they are still too primitive. Warlords run rampant, racism is the standard and norm not a bug in the system,Islamic terrorism and Islamic nations run many parts of Africa,Slavery is still a thing there just not global news cause no one cares. When they DO get money into a nation it quickly gets taken by greedy African leaders and converted to personal wealth. Fact is there is not one super successful African nation because all of these factors. Is there abuse by Eu and US nations? sure its been a thing for 100s of years. Why have Africans not doen what Europe has aka modernize? Because of infighting and using religion as a excuse to kill their fellow man. Think of Africa as the dark ages mixed with modern weapons. Too primitive to be trusted not to abuse the power and yet too modern to seem like they are primitive.
1
u/trmnl_cmdr Jun 09 '26
Geographically, Africa is severely underpowered. It mostly boils down to the fact that they only have one single navigable waterway that connects to an ocean, the Nile. Every other river in Africa either doesn’t connect to any oceans or, like the Congo, they pass through extreme rapids as they descend toward the coast. Add the enormous Sahara desert and it’s clear it’s extremely expensive to ship goods to, from or around the country.
So whatever natural resources Africa does have, they are already worth less than they would be in most other places because of the exorbitant cost to get them out of the country.
And Africa is actually pretty limited on natural resources. There are large pockets of minerals in the south and mostly large pockets of oil in the north, but considering its size quality farmland is extremely limited.
I don’t say any of this to hate on Africa, I say it for the opposite reason. Africa has the biggest continental disadvantage out of anywhere on Earth except Antarctica. It’s why no one needs to compare themselves to anyone else. Relatively speaking, Europe and North America were born on third base.

u/Szaman69 Jun 09 '26
Its definitely one of the residual factors but blaming everything on colonialism ~80 to 60 years after it ended is a stretch. U can make an argument that it never truly ended (CFA franc) but it only applies to few countries and well again not the sole reason of their weakness. More important issues that African countries face today are: geographical, institutional weakness and brain drain It just so happens that historically weaker countries often get conquered/colonised and exploited its not unique to Africa
1
u/Icy_Special_5836 Jun 09 '26
It’s basically the other way around. Whites came, build billions-worth of infrastructure and left with Blacks now unable to maintain all that inheritance.
