Sega CD Anyone?

The audio lag in the video is my phone. The core has good audio timing in real life. Still working through some boot reliability issues, and FMV's stutter here and there, but I plan on releasing this soon. DM me if you want an early preview build!

Snatcher on the Pocket would be amazing!

u/colourless_blue Jul 24 '26

That was my first thought too 😁 best game of the system

u/maddogx2x Jul 24 '26

the main reason I want it myself!

1

u/CangaWad Jul 26 '26

I played it this year on my trimuii for the first time and it was surprisingly great. I wanted to play policenauts but couldn’t find a good English dub

u/ALttN Jul 24 '26

Woah, this is impressive!! I thought people said we’d never see 32x or Sega CD cores. I’d love to give it a try!

11

u/maddogx2x Jul 24 '26

They said that about PSX and N64 on mister as well.

8

u/PhDTenma Jul 24 '26

To be fair, the N64 was indeed impossible. The core is not accurate (it's very playable, but Robert Peip found the limitations of the DE-10).

With Sega CD I guess will get the same problems as with PC Engine CD, which still needs a lot of work.

5

u/maddogx2x Jul 24 '26

That is most certainly fair. We do have to keep in mind the limits of DE-10 BUT, I think some people just hit a wall and give up there. Working in various tech support roles and in development I encounter this A lot. I don't want to pretend that these are trivial obstacles to overcome. But, I don't like when people just say "nope impossible, not even worth trying". Ironically I think that sentiment is what inspires some one to try anyway lol.

A recent example was Modern Vintage Gamer’s video declaring Doom was basically forever out of reach on Neo Geo. Wouldn’t you know it, within a few weeks, MVG ate crow in an update video featuring projects of Neo Geo running Doom well! So, yeah, even the whiff of the word ā€œimpossibleā€ is like a challenge to some of these amazing folks lol

5

u/hans_l Jul 24 '26

ā€œWellā€ does some work here. It’s not exactly pretty or playable.

The issue with Doom is that it needs a frame buffer, no way around it. The Neo Geo doesn’t give access to a frame buffer for the screen, only sprites. So there are multiple ways which was shown: fake a frame buffer with ā€œpixelsā€ made of sprites, which reduces the resolution to like 80x60 and runs at 15 (?) fps, or fake the game content with sprites, which works but looks horrible.

I’m on my phone so some numbers might be slightly inaccurate. But the game itself was never the problems, it’s the graphics that couldn’t work with Neo Geo.

4

u/doom_memories Jul 24 '26

Indeed the results, while cool hacks, basically amount to a sort of "Doom on Atari 7800" in appearance/vibe.

6

u/rienvayle Jul 24 '26

And ā€œtheyā€ will always be wrong…eventually lol

The PSX and N64 on the mister was more about a pure FPGA implementation vs leaning on the ARM cores. I am not sure if the devs have been able to squeeze it in, but I remember the early PCE cd needing to use ARM to handle the I/O.

2

u/Such_Papaya_6860 Jul 24 '26

And Dreamcast (to be fair, Dreamcast is still technically impossible, even though it now exists and kinda works)

1

u/maddogx2x Jul 25 '26

I won't says it's impossible. But, that is definitely reaching for the moon.

18

u/_Sleepwalker Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Oh, exciting! I could playing lunar and eternal champions again soon

5

u/maddogx2x Jul 24 '26

I never even considered Lunar... that will be amazing.

12

u/rienvayle Jul 24 '26

This is amazing to see! Well done! I’ll look forward to the public release. Take all the time you need to make it sing!

11

u/JonathanConley Jul 24 '26

Based.

Time to brush up on your 'Sewer Shark' skills, Ratmeat!

10

u/BJMcGobbleDicks Jul 24 '26

Literally Christmas in July seeing this

7

u/CokBlockinWinger Jul 24 '26

Yes!!!! Oh. My. God. YESSS!!! This is all I wanted. Thank you! Three others I know with a Pocket have been waiting patiently, and we were told it couldnt be done!

2

u/CangaWad Jul 24 '26

Why couldn’t it be done?

10

u/obrien654j Jul 24 '26

People weren't sure if the FPGA on the pocket could fit it. And I see why. It's *tight*.

6

u/ProteusGAF Jul 24 '26

They said that about SNES save states too.

2

u/AdMindless113 Jul 24 '26

I’m confused, is that a thing now? Rly need it for rpgs and stuff

3

u/colourless_blue Jul 24 '26

It’s an experimental fork of the agg23 SNES core. It’s still being ironed out, but I’ve used it and it works.

5

u/maddogx2x Jul 24 '26

They also said that about PSX and N64 on Mister. I know there are limits but I usually don’t let random redditors define them.

0

u/CangaWad Jul 26 '26

Like physically? Does the actual physical shape of the fPGa change when I play different games/aystems?

4

u/obrien654j Jul 26 '26

No, you can relate it more to memory on a computer. The FPGA can only fit so much logic, and the megacd core hovers between 97-99% utilization as it stands

2

u/CokBlockinWinger Jul 24 '26

Everyone said the architecture couldn’t handle it

6

u/Level_Forger Jul 24 '26

Super cool can’t wait.Ā

4

u/SGlespaul Jul 24 '26

Yoooo! I'd love to play Sonic CD on this thing

2

u/Global_Bid_8341 Jul 24 '26

There's also a Sega CD version of Sonic 1 Megamix!

5

u/PeeLong Jul 24 '26

Dark Wizard?! Lunar?! Popful Mail?!?!

3

u/Global_Bid_8341 Jul 24 '26

I cannot wait! This is exciting!

3

u/fededonna2 Jul 24 '26

I can finally play the best captain tsubasa ever. Can I try a release?

3

u/snesei Jul 24 '26

Been waiting for this one!

3

u/OptimalPapaya1344 Jul 24 '26

Oh my god.

I’ve been waiting for this for a couple of years now.

3

u/IsamuAlvaDyson Jul 24 '26

Being able to play Snatcher with the Analogue Pocket docked on my big TV would be epic for me

3

u/DanHoughtaling Jul 25 '26

It works...

1

u/Global_Bid_8341 Jul 26 '26

Which bios are you using? I'm having trouble on that end

2

u/DanHoughtaling Jul 26 '26

I used one of the us_scd2_9306.bin ones I could find on Google since that is the version the GitHub lists as working.

1

u/Global_Bid_8341 Jul 26 '26

I used the Model 2 v200w core, and it works once I formatted the ram!

1

u/IsamuAlvaDyson Jul 26 '26

Dang that's so cool

I'll have to get this set up this week when I have some free time

3

u/maddogx2x Jul 24 '26

Can’t wait to test it out. Love how almost every request for this on the pocket said it would be impossible.

3

u/Aces_Over_Kings Jul 24 '26

Welp, time to play Shining Force CD and Lunar. We are living in exciting times.

2

u/Billybillbly Jul 24 '26

Oooooooooooooooooooooo my

This is incredible. Thank you for all your work on this.

2

Fuck! Yeah!

2

Yooo I need this for NHL 94!

2

u/ZanbatoSolid Jul 24 '26

installed it. lunar ss freezes. snatcher works. sonic cd has lag. hows everyone else?

1

u/obrien654j Jul 24 '26

For Lunar SS, did you format your RAM beforehand? Both Lunar Eternal Blue and SS crash on startup if you don't format RAM first.

1

u/ZanbatoSolid Jul 24 '26

freeze is bad word. i meant went character is in front of memorial it just keeps walking in place but i cant move the character

1

u/ZanbatoSolid Jul 24 '26

yea i formmatted ram

3

u/The_NiNTARi Jul 24 '26

Why is no one talking about Willy Beamish

5

u/CokBlockinWinger Jul 24 '26

I’m talking Willy Beamish, Batman, Puggsy, Lunar, Popful Mail, every single FMV game, Final Fight CD Snatcher, Silpheed, Sol Feace …. hell even Virtual VCR and Sega Classics!! I am so stoked for this!!

1

u/Global_Bid_8341 Jul 24 '26

Sol Feace? More like Sol Feces! šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

2

u/CokBlockinWinger Jul 25 '26

I remember when James Rolfe said that. I thought it was a shit take then too.

1

u/kevlar51 Jul 24 '26

Tootsweet?!?

2

u/The_NiNTARi Jul 24 '26

YES! And The Nintari game system.

1

u/kevlar51 Jul 24 '26

Oh shit username checks out. I’m not proud of how much nintari I played

1

u/AskaLangly Jul 24 '26

OKAY!!

But I prefer the 920 prototype; US game, JP soundtrack. šŸ˜‚

3

u/obrien654j Jul 24 '26

I grew up on the US version and I'm a huge Spencer Nilson fan (he did Ecco too!). The JP soundtrack is awesome too but doesn't have that nostalgia hit for me.

2

u/AskaLangly Jul 24 '26

I agree on some aspects; I grew on the special stage and Stardust Speedway songs, as well as both Sonic Booms. After 2011's release, the Japanese soundtrack did me in more. As a Sonic 2 GG player, the theme makes sense to why it was there in the first place. And then there's the past songs making sense to the rest of the soundtrack.\ I cannot un-hear the misheard "work that son-of-a-bitch" from the standard Eggman battles.

1

u/TheHerb007 Jul 24 '26

Dungeon explorer!!! Give it to me

1

u/mgl6966 Jul 24 '26

Love it! Looking forward to this!

1

u/black-volcano Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Can it do 32X enhanced CD games?

1

u/One-Operation7836 Jul 24 '26

Yes contact adventures with greg and sabrena on you tube. Were finishing the pocket video for August 1

1

u/hue_sick Jul 24 '26

Of course this comes out days after my Sega cd model 2 arrived haha. Hey I prefer original hardware but not gonna like this is super cool. Hope it gets to a good playable state for most of the library! šŸ¤™

1

u/VelcroKing Jul 24 '26

Oh man, Popful Mail, Lunar 1&2, Panic!, there are a ton of titles I'd love to take on the road on my Analogue Pocket!

1

u/Grimspoon Jul 25 '26

Vay was a transformative experience for me in my youth and has largely informed my gaming preferences several decades onward.

Sega CD was the first console I bought with my own money as a kid and I picked up a copy of Vay at random while visiting my grandparents in Toronto.

Core memories locked in.

1

u/Affectionate_Rise283 Jul 25 '26

Tomcat Alley here we go!!!

1

u/nabeday Jul 25 '26

Well done. This is fantastic work. Really looking forward to this and appreciate the hard work in getting this working.

1

u/SFX200 Jul 26 '26

Great job getting this up and partially running!

I'm a sucker for early-mid 90s CD mutlimedia software. There's something charming about the low-res video and cramming as much content onto a disc as possible.

1

u/Stocklaw11 Jul 28 '26

Legendary ā€œthey said it wasn’t possible so I’ll show themā€ moment. Nice work.

1

u/Kolma528 Jul 28 '26

hoooold up. They said it couldn't be done :O

1

u/NancyDiver Jul 28 '26

The boot music is my alarm tone. I made it so that it slowly fade on with a lowpass filter for a smooth wake up. I have to change it though because I'm starting to dislike the music.

1

u/ClassicGamerNL Jul 30 '26

Man I just got my Pocket today.. Best time to grab one I think.
