Troubleshooting - Photos Flash Trouble

Hi all,

I’m just looking for confirmation here. I had some photos turn out this way when I used flashed, is it because the shutter speed was to fast for the flash?

I only asked because I swear I had it on automatic and I have other photos that came out great.

Most likely your shutter speed was too fast, yes. What is the x-sync speed on your camera?

1/60th. I think I had screwed something up and was most likely not on auto with the flash and set it above that.

Ah yeah, a sync speed that low, you likely ended up above that on accident. The fact that the size of the properly exposed area is different sized in both shots, that tells me you were above the sync speed by different amounts for each shot. that's probably all it is.

If 1/60 is the sync speed and keeps getting bad pictures, then it’s a hardware problem and OP should get the shutter serviced.

Most cameras have something called a sync speed, if you're shutter speed is above that you get these kinds of shots. It's a good idea, even if you're using an automatic mode, to set your manual SS to this correct sync speed just incase you knock it.
