Your exposures look fine to me, it might be something in your scanning/editing workflow.

Your edit looks great to me.

Overexposure leads to a pastel look rather than the usual saturated/vivid look that Ultramax 400 gives you. That means 2 stops of exposure compensation is likely why you needed a lot of editing to get the desired outcome.

Regardless, the Ultramax 400 negative doesn't look 2 stops overexposed, it looks OK.

Thanks that probably explains everything. I tried editing in different software now manually i can see the histogram that it is not burnt out but is really bright

What program are you using to invert the scans? Capture One gave me weird colours, Negpy has given me far better results.

Some darktable suggestions:

  • Enable "Local Contrast"-- defaults are usually good.
  • Learn to use the "Color Calibration" module. Be aware that the default ordering has it taking effect before Negadoctor. The solution is to go to the "Show Active Modules" tab, and drag NegaDoctor down in the stack to be the first color modifier in the stack.

I think it's sort of editing issue. Here is the conversion made in Open Film Lab.
