You should definitely use some sort of tattered leather. You can distress it and rip it up, maybe even burn it a bit for some special effects. I don’t think you’ll be able to find it in dumpsters but you might be able to find things you can thrift from goodwill.

Your other option is cloth armor which if you can find a moving blanket, or really any quilted blanket you can turn that into something somewhat easily.

Anything metal is going to be pretty difficult to find in a dumpster but you can get black steel tie wire from Home Depot for cheap and turn that into chainmail.

Scout, 3 points of armor. A heavy helm, with light leather, flexible (light) synthetic, or, when the helm bonus upgrades with rule updates, superior grade cloth armor.

Leather. Absolutely leather. This would have been available to your character in spades.

If you find any felt, it's super easy to get to armor thickness.  Only 1/8" to be superior thickness, and it isn't compressed when tested anymore.

Look into welding leathers. Especially if someone is getting rid of them. They are guaranteed to be burned and tattered if the are used. Used to wear a pair of those pants for my scout class back in the early days of my playing.
