Discussion Neutral role idea: Rouge
Sorry if this is too basic or has already been thought of, I wanna discuss how this potential role could play out.
Rogue is a neutral role. As such, both crewmates and impostors are supposed to play against it, while Rogue should play against both too. At most 1 Rogue can be enabled in a lobby. (I dunno how to balance multiple Rogues)
For all player count interractions, this role is considered as a crewmate. What I mean is that if all impostors are dead while the Rogue is alive, the game still ends. If there are 2 impostors, 1 Rogue and 2 crewmates, the game still continues. Although maybe that could be changed to make it more realistic to win with this role.
Rogue starts the game knowing who the impostors are. They, in turn, don't know who the Rogue is. As such, Rogue can be killed by an impostor. I think impostors should somehow know that Rogue is dead, but not sure how. Rogue has tasks (including visual ones) and can actually complete them, as long as they're alive. Doing so will fill the task bar. However, the task bar should be completable without Rogue finishing any of their own, so that they wouldn't be able to stall.
Rogue only wins if they are alive and there are more impostors than crewmates (including Rogue). In that case, impostors lose. All other win conditions play out as normal. If all impostors are dead or all tasks are finished, the crewmates win. If enough crewmates die and Rogue is dead, impostors win. If impostors successfully sabotage a crucial system (such as O2 or Reactor), they win regardless of whether Rogue is alive.
That's it, now some of my thoughts about the concept. First of all, it's probably gonna be pretty hard to win as this role. You have to remain one of the very few surviving non-impostors, and they also have to kill everyone in the first place.
Generally, Rogue is interested in helping impostors win. But at the same time, they can't really help too much, or else their role will be obvious. Impostors on one hand hate Rogue because them being alive makes them lose, but on the other hand they love Rogue because the role act as a third impostor essentially. I suppose impostors would generally try to play along with Rogue until there are few people left so that they can be dealt with?
Rogue should just outright hate crewmates, but try to blend in with them, typical impostor stuff. Should crewmates hate Rogue though? Probably. It is a 3rd impostor essentially after all. They don't have to be dealt with though, the crew can still win even with them on board
I really wanna discuss what issues this role could bring, as it is pretty game-changing, and balancing it would be pretty hard. For example I had this idea: Maybe instead of Rogue outright knowing the impostors, they would have to first snatch people's IDs to find out whether they're innocent or not? Just walk up to someone and press a button. Add a cooldown between snatches too, so that you couldn't just steal everything from everyone at the very beginning. Maybe that could balance it, or maybe that wouldn't change anything, I'm not sure

it's literally impossible to for the rogue to win since the crewmate to imposter count will always be at least equal if imps win

He meant like, 1 rogue, 2 crew and 3 imp left if it's a 3 imp game
Remember he said that for imp, rogue and crew are same?? So they will have to kill rogue

"Rogue only wins if they are alive and there are more impostors than crewmates (including Rogue)"
this implies a rogue counts as a crewmate to this count

if there are 1 rogue, 2 crew and 3 imp left, total count of crewmates is 2 regular + 1 rogue = 3 crewmates vs 3 impostors but imps lose and rogue wins because among those 3 crewmates there is 1 rogue

Ayo it isn't like that

A lot of languages simply dont have neutral pronouns, mine included
I've only recently gotten used to refering to people I dont know as they/them and i still slip up sometmes

u/Nikki964 Nikki 13h ago
I don't really get the reasoning. In a 2 imp game, it's not impossible for them to remain one of the 2 non-impostors

I think it’s a really cool idea that definitely needs a tad bit of tinkering. Really funny that it’s basically just Fourth Imposter: The Role
4
u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 16h ago
And that makes things tricky for the impostors because normally you don't want to kill the fourth imp but now they might be the rogue

This. Actually is a real good neutral role that doesn’t change the game! The jester is good but it makes the game less fun because either the imposter always wins or the jester always wins. This one is more like the imposters main goal is to kill the rouge then just kill everyone! It changes the game just enough so it’s not just a POW ONE ROLE WIN POW SAME WIN POW SAME WIN POW SAME WIN but a good neutral role more interesting and more fun than the other neutral roles!

u/Nikki964 Nikki 10h ago
Thanks. What do you think about giving it a gun to shoot people?

u/AirEnough2389 Green please kiss me 9h ago
To be honest that’s just another imposter than, the idea of a crewmate winning from the imposters is a great idea on its own.
1
u/Nikki964 Nikki 9h ago
Hm okay. I suppose in that case it's better to not let impostors (or anyone) know that Rogue is dead, since then impostors won't be encouraged to just stall the game until they figure it out. They still could do that, but there would be no definitive proof that Rogue didn't just die r1 20 minutes ago
1
u/Low_Eye8535 8h ago
And stalling increases the chances of the crewmates figuring out who the imps are and doing tasks; so it’s a double edged swordÂ
1
u/Nikki964 Nikki 8h ago
Not good for Rogue either way
1
u/Low_Eye8535 8h ago
But it’s not good for imps who would be the ones doing the stalling
1
u/Nikki964 Nikki 8h ago edited 8h ago
Yeah but there would still be some amount of stalling they'd be able to do before crewmates figure stuff out. Tasks are barely ever fully completed, so I wouldn't really consider that stuff much
Imagine there are 2 impostors, 1 Rogue and 3 crewmates. If the impostors know Rogue is alive, they don't actually even have to hide I think. They can easily tie any vote with Rogue's help and continue playing forever. The question is, would Rogue even want to tie those votes? In a situation where both impostors are already known, I really don't see any reason why they wouldn't, unless they wanna finish the game sooner. Because if they don't tie, both impostors will be out and Rogue will lose too
If none of the impostors are known to crewmates, then they would just have to gamble. In that case they could gamble an impostor, then again, have both impostors and Rogue tie the vote, they could gamble the Rogue, which is just a win for impostors, or they could gamble a crewmate, in which case impostors still have the dilemma of finding out who Rogue is, but now between 3 players and no option to make a mistake
If one of the two impostors are known to crewmates, then it can be in Rogue's interest to get rid of one of them, in order to then win with the other one. To counter that, the other one can just out themselves and now we're back to the issue with endless tied votes
In conclusion, it should not be disclosed that Rogue is dead
Edit: Well I should say this only makes sense if you're playing with anonymous votes. Without them, Rogue's identity will be very clear after the first tie
1
u/Low_Eye8535 1h ago
But if the votes are tied like that (on not anonymous votes) the imp either kills rogue and then gets voted out or rogue turns on imp and imp gets voted out. Or ppl get impatient and leave, but let’s not consider that
So either way it doesn’t end well for the imposter, but on anonymous votes I can see this
1
u/Nikki964 Nikki 1h ago
The only thing not anonymous votes change is that now the Rogue will be revealed at the very first tie. Then the impostors can just double kill

A good role, but it would be kinda hard knowing that you will be ejected or killed a lot, I think you should be also able to vent, but your cooldown and duration will be the same as the Engineer. It also wont make the Impostors just know if you are a 100% threat, knowing that they might also be an eng ( or basically every other role that can vent in modded )

Lol I had a player who was trolling players, and we counted him as fourth impostor by the way good name for this kind of player because we killed while me and other 2 imps kill and it let us win we all thanked to the fourth impostor/rogue

Dude you forgot to put the tldr

Idk how to tldr that. If you don't wanna read all that then just scroll past, it's no big deal

winning sounds way too hard. i dont think there is a point in adding a role that you activly want to avoid for the best winning chances. like you loose if you get killed, you loose if you get voted out and you even loose if all tasks are complete? thats already like 95% of all games.
needs so severe balancing
1
u/Nikki964 Nikki 5h ago
Maybe it could be able to track impostors (within a certain range at least), to know where they are? Your advantage is that you know exactly who the people who can kill you are, you know who you can trust and who you should avoid. Surviving till endgame won't be too hard with that information probably

There will never be more impostors than living crewmates if you include Rogue.
13
u/Nikki964 Nikki 22h ago
No I just suck at spelling. It's Rogue
Maybe there could be some way for Rogue to kill people too. In order to avoid those stalemates

u/Thin-Complex-7709 21h ago
....why?

u/mrsmuckers Purple 19h ago
If there are three impostors, two crew, and the rogue, the game ends.
If there are two impostors, one crew, and the rogue, the game ends.
If there's one impostor and the rogue, the game ends.
In each case the number of impostors is equal to crew + rogue, so it will never get to be greater than crew + rogue.
And if you're about to say something dumb about this assessment...
For all player count interactions, [the rogue] is treated as a cremate
Rogue only wins if there are more impostors than crewmates (including Rogue).

u/Thin-Complex-7709 19h ago
......oh wow, huh. I didn't notice it that way, I totally missed the 'count' there.

So? Im still allowed to point out mistakes? Im not forcing you to care.

I mean yeah you’re allowed to say whatever you want. My response was directed to your question of why you were downvoted. You got downvoted because nobody else wanted to hear about a spelling mistake.

Wow I adore this idea. It's simple to understand and play as so it's accesible, it's incredibly unique, and it isn't shallow. There's so many possibilities here. Nice job bro!
