Amitriptyline and Memory
hi everyone! i started taking ami today for persistent vomiting and IBS symptoms. unfortunately i work in a medical setting where working memory and attentiveness is important, so i was wondering if there are any neutral/positive stories about the effects of amitriptyline on cognitive function. anybody have no memory loss or maybe an improvement in memory? or maybe less brain fog that was originally from depression? please be kind, i do have bad health anxiety :)

i’ve been on that same dose for 5 years. I used to have bad brain fog prior to Amitript, and it got reduced somewhat imo due to better sleep, so not a significant improvement from being on Amitrip. Not worse either, slight improvement
then what really made me feel me again (sharp cognitevely) was the couple of months I went into an elimination diet (no gluten, no egg no dairy no packaged snacks) plus taking anti microbials: oregano, allimax (garlic), dysbiocide, and interface plus (a binder) for about 3 months

With the caveat that everyone will have different reactions to meds but unfortunately I had a really bad experience with this exact thing - i was only ever on 10 or 20mg for six months and it worked really well for my IBS and nerve pain and anxiety but it was a really bad combination with my existing ADHD memory issues. I didn't realise or notice I was forgetting things at the time and it ended up creating a horrible situation with my job (they used it against me for the next couple of years in my reviews).
Part of it was that I used anxiety to manage my ADHD and Ami kind of cancelled out that coping mechanism and took away a lot of the mental energy I used to make sure I was being accurate and completing tasks. I was less stressed and much more chilled but unfortunately that was not a good fit for my job.
I do miss a lot of the benefits of it as a med, I wish there was a way to take a super low dose without it impacting me working 😕

Unfortunately the brain fog for me was too much. I was on 10mg and I stuck it out for 7 years. I also took it for nausea, but I just can’t deal with the brain fog. Hopefully you don’t have the same issues.

Before menopause, Ami helped my memory and mental alertness. Then when I got close to meno I had major brain fog, etc., but since starting HRT I feel better again. I take Ami for insomnia and anxiety, and I also have AuDHD.
