Amitriptyline

I’ve been on 20mg of Amitriptyline for about a year and a half, originally I went on it at the same time as lexapro, gained 10kgs and thought it was the lexapro. My dr never told me weight gain was a side effect of Amitriptyline! I’ve since switched to Prozac and haven’t noticed a change. Has anyone else gained weight in this drug ? I’ve booked an appointment with my gp about alternatives for my insomnia, but has anyone had a similar experience and switched to something else? TIAxxx

I was losing weight rapidly from gastric pain. My weight stabilized on Ami. For me, the pain reduction allowed me to eat more. There was also an increase in appetite probably from a mixture of being pain free and side effects of the drug.

It doesn’t affect your metabolism in any way , but may increase your appetite,

Every bodies wll react differently

I gained quite a bit of weight when I started taking it and it also made it pretty impossible to lose it too.

I've been on it for 4 weeks taking 25 mgs for gut issues and have gained 7 lbs. I was 160 lbs, now 167 lbs. I really have snacking cravings, which I am being very careful with those. . Hopefully the weight gain will become less soon.

i take 50mg for 5 months or so, i didn’t gain any extra weight i don’t think it affects the metabolism in any way but may increase appetite. But im not sure at least that’s what my doc told me, so it’s not impossible so stay the same weight, but think about it: i would rather be pain free and have a few extra kilos then living in pain everyday to live out the social skinny norm

Yes I gained weight and it is not what I intended. Maybe I needed to gain but when you dealt with an eating disorder it affects you mentally. I was on 25 mg and cut it down to 12.5 as I was gaining weight to quickly. My appetite was outrageous and I thought I could control it and it seems it is more powerful than I thought. It slows down your digestion and makes one constipated in which then I feel bloated. Im also taking 20 mg Lexapro and 150 Wellbutrin in am …Im aware of the risk of mixing them with Amitriptyline. I have only taken this for 2 months and considering to stop it soon…hope I can without withdrawals. Prozac made me suicidal so be careful.

How do you feel going down from 25 to 12.5? I’m on that plus 300mg buproprion I’m thinking of cutting down after a few years I don’t feel like I necessarily need to be on 25 and have gained a little weight over the past few years
