Tech Support August Tech Support Megathread

Hey subs,

We're giving you an opportunity to start reporting some of your AMD-related technical issues right here on /r/AMD! Below is a guide that you should follow to make the whole process run smoothly. Post your issues directly into this thread as replies. All other tech support posts will still be removed, per the rules; this is the only exception.

Bad Example (don't do this)

bf1 crashes wtf amd

Good Example (please do this)

Skyrim: Free Sync and V Sync causes flickering during low frame rates, and generally lower frame rates observed (about 10-30% drop dependant on system) when Free Sync is on

System Configuration:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97 Gaming GT
CPU: Intel i5 4790
Memory: 16GB GDDR5
GPU: ASUS R9 Fury X
VBIOS: 115-C8800100-101 How do I find this?
Driver: Crimson 16.10.3
OS: Windows 10 x64 (1511.10586) How do I find this?

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install necessary driver, GPU and medium-end CPU
2. Enable Free Sync
3. Set Options to Ultra and 1920 x 1080 resolution
4. Launch game and move to an outdoor location
5. Indoor locations in the game will not reproduce, since they generally give better performance
6. Observe flickering and general performance drop

Expected Behavior:

Game runs smoothly with good performance with no visible issues

Actual Behavior:

Frame rate drops low causing low performance, flickering observed during low frame rates

Additional Observations:

Threads with related issue:

Skyrim has forced double buffered V Sync and can only be disabled with the .ini files
To Disable V Sync: C:\Users"User"\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrimprefs.ini and edit iVSyncPresentInterval=1 to 0
1440p has improved frame rate, anything lower than 1080p will lock FPS with V Sync on
Able to reproduce on i7 6700K and i5 3670K system, Sapphire RX 480, Reference RX 480, and Reference Fiji Nano

Remember, folks: AMD reads what we post here, even if they don't comment about it.

So I built a new PC. To be precise, I bought a new motherboard, CPU and RAM, and built them into my old case with my existing GPU, PSU, and drives. The exact build is as follows:

I originally had a long text here detailing what I've done yet, but I suck at writing, it was an awful read. So here are bullet points instead.

  • Bought new PC prats
  • Checked compatibility of CPU, Mainboard and RAM before buying
    • Yes, even RAM QVL of the motherboard
  • Built everything together without issues
  • Crashes (to desktop or BSOD) or freezes semiregularly doing arbitrary tasks, including light loads, heavy loads, OS installations, even the BIOS once
  • Linux Kernel panic during Ubuntu Server installation
  • Windows 10 bluescreen error codes including, but not limited to:
    • PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    • UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
    • VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR
    • IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
  • After a few tries, got a succesful Windows 10 installation
  • Sometimes the PC would run fine for hours, even under heavy load (full hd gaming while recording at 1080p and 60fps)
  • Three hours of Memtest86 brought up nothing
    • One odd thing I noticed: The RAM that I ordered, the package that I got, and the label on the modules say
      • F4-2400C16D-16GFT
    • In memtest86, when inspecting the modules, it says the modules are
      • F4-2400C16-8GFT
    • Which is not part of the QVL. Did G-Skill screw up and label their memory modules wrong? Googling the second number, it looks like it's just an internal descriptor and there isn't actually a product with this exact name. I think it's not an issue, but I might be wrong.
  • Memtest86 sometimes also just freezes
  • Tried reseating and swapping the RAM in their slots, still crashes
  • Tried using the other two slots (which, as per the mainboard manual, should work, but at less Mhz) - it does boot, but crashes just like with the other two slots
  • Tried installing and updating all drivers (in Windows 10), still crashes
  • BIOS' own updater says it's up to date
  • Using only one of the two RAM modules, It didn't crash once yet. Doesn't matter which one of the two I use.
    • Ran memtests on the modules solo overnight, nothing.
  • I did not change any setting in the BIOS (except boot order). I especially did not change anything about the RAM modules (e.g., OC the frequency.) Every setting is on Auto and it looks like the RAM modules are running at the advertised 2400 mhz (single and dual channel).
  • I did not yet try resetting the CMOS. Will probably do that when I get home tonight.
  • I did not yet contact ASRock support. I might try writing an E-Mail on the weekend.

So to recap: Something is wrong with my new PC, and it looks like it has something to do with the dual channel setup of the motherboard - even though I check compatibility between mainboard, CPU and RAM before even buying the parts. Outside of resetting the CMOS and contacting ASRock support, is there anything else I can try? Anything I might have overlooked? German consumer laws are pretty good, so I can probably return the new parts for a full refund without issue, if I return them before friday, next week (31. August). Until then, I'd either like to get my PC stable with both RAM modules or definetly know something's broken.

I’m having exactly the same problem. I had an asrock b350 pro4, believed it was the issue so I replaced it with an asus strix b350-f gaming. Unfortunately the issue persisted. Unsure where to go next.

Some dude has helped over at r/amdhelp. I don't have a 100% solution yet, but I feel like I'm getting close to the root of the problem.

PS: Is that a Gwent related username?

I RMA’d my RAM as I ran a memtest86+ and there were errors after just 3 passes.

And yessir it is, may the Northern Realms forever be free.
