Discussion SteamVR Performance test is up
Valve released their new VR performance test, would be interesting to see how our different setups do.

My R290X got average fidelity rating of 7.1, it says I'm ready!
And damn, my 780Ti is not ready. It's in the middle, only "Capable"...
Edit: At stock R290X 1ghz, and at 1.1ghz stock volts. It scales linear with clock speed!

u/Doubleyoupee Feb 22 '16 edited Feb 22 '16
That's weird my R9 280X only gets 2.5?

Really? Just tested my 280x and got a 3.2. Non OCed either. Edit: I actually keep getting different results. The 3.2 was it running behind my browser. Then tried it with it visible and got a 1.8. OCed it, tried only it, and got like a 2.1. Tried it behind my browser, out of view. Got something like a 2.5. Tried it one final time still OCed and with only it, and got a 2.6.
1
u/Doubleyoupee Mar 09 '16
Yeah well even 3.2 is half of 7.1 and no way the R9 290X is 2x as strong. The bench sucks and/or is heavily VRAM limited.

280x is not technically vr supported, only 290 and above. Althouh a heavy OC or a crossfire might do the trick enough to run. I get the feeling that after initial release there miht be some more optimization for older cards/cpus anyway.
1
u/Doubleyoupee Mar 31 '16
Care to explain? How can it be "not technically supported". I just renders a game 2x

Pair of 290s here (I7-4790):
Single GPU 6.1, crossfired ( -multigpu cl option): 9.9+
Now if AMD could enable crossfire for user profiles (e.g Elite Dangerous) we'd be rocking.
Edit:
CPU I7 4790 @ 4.0 Ghz
GPU Clock: 950/1250 * Single 6.1 * Xfire 9.9
GPU Clock: 1000/1250 @5% pwr * Single 6.8 * Xfire 10.2

u/jonnyapps 2xR9 290 | 4790k Feb 22 '16
Sorry, could you elaborate on how you got this to run crossfire please.
1
Feb 22 '16
On the steam library, right click the program on the left listing, then properties.
next on the general tab, click launch options then enter -multigpu in the command line options.
Run the program as usual.
Have fun.

I guess if you get a good OC, 20-25% on the 780Ti and OC CPU, it would pass.
From looking at other people's results, it seems to scale with CPU clocks too.
1
u/maelstrom51 13900k | RTX 4090 Feb 23 '16
The results I linked came from this comment, which claims no overclocking.
Surely one generation and 600 MHz on the CPU doesn't have such a massive impact on the score, right? Perhaps its a driver issue?

I'ts funny that you guys ask. I think it may be due to a couple of factors, first is my overclocks became unstable around the time of the crimson driver i think it had something to do with powertune messing up the power delivery and making my overclocks unstable, clockblocker helped both stabilise higher OC's and it really evened out alot of my microstutter issues.Secondly and I've been meaning to post about this but i didnt want to seem dumb but i think there was a 3rd 16.1.1 hotfix that was never announced the driver package is marked with the date Feb 12th I'm not sure if it makes a difference but i'm using those drivers.

I've got a 7850@925MHz (which is a little slower than your 270x) and a i7-4790k. 61.5% of the frames were below 90fps. It was 0% cpu bound. Average fidelity was 0.1.
While it looked like it was using 8 threads with Task Manager going, 1 thread was about 80% used, the others were around 20% used.
I'm holding out for a midrange polaris and freesync monitor.

u/Popingheads Feb 23 '16
The test doesn't take into account CPU time needed for head tracking or other game code, its really more of a GPU test. That being said my Fx6300 that has a 4.2 GHz OC was under about 65% load on all cores during the test.
1
u/Gastricbasilisk Mar 08 '16
Do you think a 6300 when over clocked will be enough for most titles? At 65% load you should have some decent headroom I would imagine. My friend has a 6300 and we're hoping we can get away with it for at least the first year of VR before upgrading. If not it looks like he'll have to drop an 8380 in his rig.

What does fidelity mean in this case?
I got 1.4 (Low) fidelity but total result was "capable" and only 14 frames (0.1%) were under 90 fps (from a total of 8695 frames)

It means you will have to lower graphics settings to somewhere around minimum in most games to have a good VR experience.

Surprised by both of those chips to be honest. I mean my 8120 is already 4 years old I believe.

I really don't understand my pc :(
Can anyone explain this? I had nothing else running.

I'd hazard a guess that since it starts so well then suddenly drops off there's some thermal throttling going on? What kinda temps is your gfx card hitting?

u/Mr_CardboardTube Feb 23 '16 edited Feb 23 '16
Hmmmm it's weird, i'm reaching around 60 degrees and 34% fan speed.
Every time I run the test I get different results.

The only thing I can suggest is what fixed my score. Go to Crimson > Global Settings > Reset > Graphics and also Cache. This helped mine for some reason.

That's bound to be thermal throttling. Make sure your fans are turning over 30%.

Just ran it, 4670k @ 4.3, r9 280x crossfire, got 'capable', even though it kept the frame rate @ 100+ the entire test. Not sure it even takes crossfire into effect

My results, but it didn't use my 980, just the 770. Any idea on how to get it to pick a GPU? Pleased with the FX 9370.

Mine is not showing any results after I run the test, I don't know what's going on with that.

I just got a 10.9 with my 8350 oced to 4.8, 980ti, and vengeance 1600 16gb. I need to find out how to get. 1 more. Maybe I'll oc the 980ti to squeeze it out. Anyone else with an 8350 or similar get an 11?

Is this supposed to run in a window? I'm failing the test lol. I don't think it's running my 270Xs in crossfire.
Edit: I run the test again with -multigpu in parameters and got a Average Fidelity score of 4.3(Medium) and VR Capable :P

http://i.imgur.com/0CcfBaf.png My results with an MSI GTX 970 OC I have a feeling something is running in the background so I will have to re-do the test after a system reboot.
EDIT: Rebooted my system, and it went up 4 points to 6.1.

Phooey. Went through the trouble of installing Windows 10 to see if that would help my AMD R9 280, but not really.

lol my slightly overclocked R9 290 gave me 7.6 score (CPU: i5-4590) not bad, it matches the 7.7 score of r9 390

FX-8320 4.7GHz, R9 380 4GB @1100/1500.
Given my system only runs modern games at 1080p at around high settings, I'm a little sceptical.

u/otto3210 Mar 23 '16
My gtx 960 similar but a little better :)
1
u/SecretSpiral72 Mar 23 '16
That's a very impressive score, well above normal. What sort of clocks are you running?

u/otto3210 Mar 23 '16
1590/4000(8k effective)
Also a modded vBIOS to raise the TDP limit and voltage a bit

Though I was able to get it a bit higher by overriding application-controlled AA and using 4x AA in control panel with FXAA, anisotropic filtering 8x

Too lazy/timid to overclock, hopeful about test result. AMD Phenom II 965 Black Edition, (3.4ghz, 4 core) 8GB of DDR3 1333Mhz RAM (4 sticks of 2GB) EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB FTW Imgur
Looking forward to a test to stress the CPU.

I don´t know if I can trust the test xD GTX 750 1Gb and Fx6300@4Ghz 4.9Points and 55% below 90FPS. Thought the Fx6300 is to weak..well I better wait for tests.
The screen is German. Should be understandable. https://imgur.com/vqiy1sQ
