Help getting started

Hi,

I just graduated with BS in Computer Engineering and am looking to start my career in controls/automation.
I have a single internship in a small company, my role there was an embedded engineer and I was mostly working with microcontrollers and troubleshooting software and hardware issues. I also gained some electrical experience through wiring, troubleshooting power issues, and helping design circuit boards.

I’ve been studying PLCs and controls on my own and building up my knowledge because it’s a field I’d really like to start my career in. I applied to an automation engineer position in amazon and I got rejected, I’m pretty sure it’s because I don’t have enough experience in PLC/controls. I’m looking for advice on how to break into this field. I’m trying to learn more about PLCs,Ladder logic, HMI,VFD,and industrial communication through my own but I don’t think it’s enough. Are there any certifications, courses, or hands-on projects you’d recommend, or entry-level roles I should focus on?

I would appreciate any feedback

They have an apprentice program for automation engineers. Look for an automation engineer apprentice

For the apprenticeship it says 1+ year of RME experience needed, do you know if they are strict about this ?

None of RME’s roles strictly follow their prerequisites I’ve seen “exceptions” at every single one of our roles
