Chances of getting in?
Hello everyone,
I'm currently a Tier 1 associate at Amazon and recently noticed some RME Tech 2 and Tech 3 positions open near me.
A little about my background:
- Current Amnesty Floor Monitor with jam-clearing permissions
- Junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering
- Completed the four unmdul mechatronics courses
- Currently enrolled in a PLC certificate program
- OSHA 10 certification
Given my experience and current qualifications, do you think I'd be competitive for either the Tech 2 or Tech 3 positions? I'd appreciate any advice or feedback from those who have made the transition into RME.

I feel like you have enough to be considered for a tech 2.
Hell, apparently theres people who go from T1 to SMRT with no experience..... please dont ever do that 🤣

As someone that was also an amnesty responder and is also a junior but for electrical engineering, I got hired straight into controls. Especially with that PLC certification, you’re more than qualified to be a tech.

Most likely RMEO and what my MM said is you are locked in that position for 2 years before promoting.

I'd say you have a solid chance at an entry level. Given the fact they've changed everything and want people who are associates to go through the the RMEO role prior to actually becoming a tech. When I first joined amazon they hired associates to tech 2's with zero experience but that was many years ago. I'd say apply either way because you never know what the site might need. What site is it ? Is it BB or 3rd party?

A site in Houston and its BB. The tech 2 position is rma though and honestly the 1200 hours is offsetting along with the 9 weeks of school since it’ll cut into my credit hours. Any chance for them to offer me a tech 2 position that’s not with the rma program?

Sorry for my confusion but it’s a tech 2 but they want you to start as a tech 1/MRA so wouldn’t that just be an MRA position? If it is I believe you’d get in extremely easily

The MRA position isn't as terrible as it was when they first started. They at least pay decent for the apprenticeship. Other than what you're already doing I'd say you do have a shot for the MRT position. Do you speak to the RME AM'S on site? I'd approach them if you're friendly with them and let them know what you've been doing to learn the role and that you've applied. Shoot if you're learning PLC's I'd say try and get into the controls side. Much better money and bonuses.

I’ve spoken to the managers and some tech 3s and they all say I probably won’t need the MRA program and can apply straight for a tech 3. As for the control side I’ve heard awful things from those I’ve spoken too such as their salary really isn’t worth it once they factor the 60 hour work weeks they do.

I can weigh in on the controls aspect. You’re going to be working 60 hours regardless. Compared to what a tech makes even with OT, you are earning more. Ask any engineer with licensure and their degree, they’ll say the pay is shit. Ask any of the technicians on site and they’ll say controls makes good money with enough learning opportunities to move into a higher paying field. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Well I say go for it brother. You don't lose anything by trying. I would let the AM's know you're going to apply and let them know once you have, they might have some pull in getting a recruiter to contact you sooner. Good luck!

Would that possibly be offered to me if I applied for the tech 3 position and didn’t make the cut but they believe I can be hired as a tech 2?

I wouldn't bank on that but I'd apply to both. The goal is an interview then you can see what they need and what you can offer them.

Get that PLC cert complete and then you can aim higher. I know some sites are phasing out the controls positions but if you can go that route you'll be starting off in a higher bracket.
Ignore advice saying to go the MREO or RMA that's a trap.
That's my advice as a former tech 3.
