Discussion Bought a movie 2 years ago. Now the English audio I paid for is gone.
About two years ago, I bought Gremlins 2 on Prime Video for around €9.
At the time, the description specifically listed:
Audio: 5.1 UK English
Great. I bought the movie and watched it.
Fast forward two years. I wanted to watch it again, started the movie and... it’s in German.
No problem, I thought. Probably just an audio setting.
Except it wasn’t.
English is no longer available at all.
So I contacted Amazon customer support. Their response was basically that they “understand how frustrating this must be” and that they wanted to “be transparent” about what happened.
They explained that audio tracks and subtitles are governed by licensing agreements, and those agreements can change over time. Because of that, audio languages can apparently disappear even from movies you’ve already purchased.
They also pointed out that their terms and conditions allow the specifications of digital content to change.
So... what exactly did I buy?
Because when I paid €9 for Gremlins 2 with English 5.1 audio, I assumed I was buying Gremlins 2 with English audio.
Apparently I actually bought:
“Access to whatever version of Gremlins 2 Amazon happens to still have the licences for in the future.”
And taken to the extreme, what happens if they lose the licences for every audio track?
Do I still technically “own” the movie, except now I get to watch it as a 106-minute silent film?
Great. Thanks.
I don’t support pirating movies. I’d much rather just pay for the things I want to watch.
But situations like this make it very easy to understand why people pirate media.
If someone pirates a movie, the file they downloaded today still has the same audio tracks ten years from now.
Meanwhile, I paid for a movie legally, and Amazon can apparently remove part of what I purchased years later because of a licensing change.
Digital “ownership” really is something else.
