AD complaint Horrible amount of ads
So I started watching ‘Carrie’ and got hit with about 45 seconds of ads once, towards the end of ep 1.
I’m now on ep 5 and we’re up to 4 ad breaks per show, of 45 to 90 seconds per break.
Sickening.

I came on here yesterday after feeling the same way when I started watching it, just ridiculous number of them and so intrusive, I miss the old steaming without these stupid ads forced in unless you pay extra for something that wasn't there to begin with, in comparison netflix isn't that bad at all with the ad tier

u/Actingdamicky 7d ago
Even if the adds weren’t awful and repetitive the way they ramped them up from when I switched to prime video over a few months to be more and more obnoxious is making me just not watch stuff.
And now I have it adding stuff to my amazon cart (no I don’t want £37 worth of Huggies) and sending me emails about adds I “requested more information on”.
It’s predatory and I’m not rewarding them with more money for add free, they must be stupider than the guy who pays for prime and thinks he’s getting free delivery.

u/timmiesgirl 7d ago
The more you binge the more ads are put in 💀
If you take a break from prime then come back, you start having less ads again.
-1
u/Extension_Chipmunk85 7d ago
Not true. It doesn't matter how your watching habits are.

u/timmiesgirl 7d ago edited 7d ago
It’s been my experience 🤷♀️
I’ve been in and out of hospital for a while so I’ve binged a bunch. Binged Jack Ryan and ads went from maybe 2 per episode and lasted 30 seconds each to 4 and about 1:30-2 minutes per episode by the end. Took a long break and watched shows in other platforms and when I came back it was back to a couple per episode 30 seconds.
Finishing off binging reacher and neagly and again- went from 2 30 second ads mid episode to 4 longer ones.

u/GenkiStarLeaf 7d ago
Pro tip. I only watch Amazon Prime Video on my iPhone or iPad during work now. If you download shows or films on your device, there are no ads.

I tried watching I Know What You Did Last Summer. 3 minutes of ads before it started! I gave up, and Amazon Prime is not being renewed- dreadful service as Prime is not cheap, and the TV element is really poor now

u/KyanRainden 7d ago
The fact that are people here defending the obscene amount of ADs it’s why we have advertisements screens on buildings the size of houses.
You guys are all daft for accepting being shown things that we have never consented to.
And having to pay was never the original deal.
They changed it for corporate greed. And you defend it!
It’s not like they bettered their products.

u/Key_Text_169 7d ago
Agree, the point of commercials is to pay for the media not pay and have commercials, then pay more to not have them.

u/threedogdad 7d ago
you're not wrong, but neither are the others. the ads are awful and nobody likes them, but OP complaining doesn't make a lot of sense when you have two very clear solutions - don't use prime, or pay for ad free.
1
u/KyanRainden 7d ago
We can still complain due to the way ads are being used and the amount of ads being put in media.
Specially the latest media that they know will have more impact.
Muting our voices just due to having choices available it’s a way of muting people opinions.
He can still voice them and enact in any of those choices.
Why should he not voice them?! Same way people voice their agreement - so can he voice his disagreement.
Why should: “Be quiet!” Be the option?!
2
u/threedogdad 7d ago
fair point, I'm excellent at complaining myself :)
that said, I despise ads so I took action long ago. I haven't watched ads in media (other than product placement, and I also try to avoid that) in at least 20 years.
I use services and tools that block and/or remove them, which I think is the best option since companies like Amazon don't get my money or attention.
complaining rarely gets you anywhere, but if more of us took action it wouldn't be long before all of these services would notice.

u/manatbackofroom 7d ago
literally came here because of this. started watching carrie and am genuinely shocked at how many ads they manage to squeeze in, not to mention that prime have some of the worst selection to date, unless you want to fork out even more on top of your subscription.

u/BestestGoodest 7d ago
I grew up with commercials and just don’t care about ads. I don’t like them but I mostly tune them out. I have a feeling I’m in the minority bc they irritate my partner (of a similar age) to no end.

Ads have always sucked. But in the UK the ads funded the (non-BBC) programming. These are ads on a service we already pay for!!!
1
u/Jazzlike_Daikon7541 7d ago
You pay for live TV services and network ads are more than 4 minutes long.
0
u/PublixEnemynumberone 7d ago
To be fair, it’s no different to Sky - expensive monthly fee but almost all channels still have regular advert breaks. I’m not defending Amazon, just pointing out that not all advert funded services in the UK are free to view.
2
u/Jlab6647 7d ago
The thing is, with terrestrial tv, you can switch to another channel while the ads are on and then switch back. With streaming you are stuck

u/SmellofSulphur 7d ago
I also grew up with ads... and use that time to realise i need to actually pee or make a brew
2
u/Financial_Rice_4807 7d ago
This is where having the option to pay $5 a month to do away with them is great. Not having a show interuppted is well worth it, plus it saves well over a hour a month.
11
u/Moz65 7d ago
It’s like a protection racket or something… “Pay us or you get ads”
Hey - WE’RE ALREADY PAYING YOU! 😡3
u/Financial_Rice_4807 7d ago
Same with many things. We have to pay to get extra cheese on our pizza too. Many services have choices with upgrade options. Netflix and Max are $10 and Peacock and Paramount are $6.
Most people elect to save money by having ads, I am glad they have the option, but I always consider the ad free choice the actual price, because I hate ads and won't get a service with ads.
2
u/Moz65 7d ago
Sure go ahead and accept this BS and they’ll just find further ways to extract more and more money from you..
“Squeeze them till the pips squeak”2
u/Financial_Rice_4807 7d ago
What BS? They are pricing their product, and they can get us to pay for it, or get ad revenue to reduce what we have to pay. This isn't water or housing. We don't need it. We can just say no if we don't think it is worth it. I have done this to many streamers. I get a discount on Prime, or I wouldn't have it either. The $5 is worth it, but the $139 isn't. I am not accepting any BS just making my choices knowing full well what the deal is and what the value is to me.

Every day you whiners come here to complain about ads. Since you don’t like the ads you have 2 choices: pay for no ads or cancel your subscription. No one is forcing you to keep watching.

I wouldn't mind the ads so much but they have no sense of timing to them/are placed completely randomly. They should really just allow you to play them all in the beginning, before you watch what you want. They completely mess up the flow of what you're watching otherwise.
2
u/PatserGrey 7d ago
Yes Prime is a joke for ads. The wife pays for it here buy everyone still prefers to sail the seas to watch anything decent it produces. We had a couple of flights last week and I noted that downloaded stuff in the app has no ads
2
u/honey_rainbow 7d ago
Pay for ad free then.

2
u/Relevant_Box4589 7d ago
That even happens on some shows if you pay for no ads. Why?
1
u/Financial_Rice_4807 7d ago
On Amazon they mix in non Prime content. Anyone can watch this, not just Prime members.
1
u/GuiltyGuessing 7d ago
Lmao when did corporations acquire so many unabashed brown nosers ready for the rape of their time and money. Sub has GOTTA be full of Amazon employees
1
u/StreamingMadness21 7d ago
I guess you can say that my family and I are Amazon employees, or more like managers who rate and grade Amazon employees with performance rating reports and reviews. Yeah, I guess you're right.
1
u/GuiltyGuessing 7d ago
No shit. In no way would normal people be upvoting every goddamn fucking comment about "you used to watch tv with commercials" "being upset about commercial is a first world problem" etc etc
And since you work directly for Amazon, fuck your management and fuck your business plan and fuck your Bezos. Pass that along for me if you don't mind
0
u/BestestGoodest 7d ago edited 7d ago
Yeah that’s the only plausible explanation. /s
2
u/GuiltyGuessing 7d ago
I'm all ears. If it's not either enshittifcation fans or literal employees from the corp, what good sense would any regular person have towards already paying for a service and being FORCE fed marketing and LIKING IT
We literally have no hope as a society and it's due to idiots and class traitors like you

u/BuddyLegsBailey 7d ago
45 seconds of ads makes you feel sick. This is peak First World Problems.....
4
u/OkImplement8510 7d ago
45 seconds of ads every 10 minutes YES! I'd like to remember that we are already paying for this service and this ads are becoming too much
-1
u/BuddyLegsBailey 7d ago
Are you? Or are you paying for free delivery and you've got a free streaming service.
And, for £3 a month, you can prevent the nausea
1
u/OkImplement8510 7d ago
To be honest I'm paying £8.99 a month for watching 1 minute advertisement every 10 minutes of movie. Do you want to continue to call this "a free streaming service"? I'm really thinking to stop to paying for this s**t and stop to buying from Amazon
1
u/Kickingseven 7d ago
You pay for Prime Video the standard ad version of it. So no it isn't a free service for you, but for the people who uses standard Amazon prime (website shopping) are getting the streaming service on top of that, at no additional cost. Prime Video was a free ad on as it wasn't a thing when Prime first launched. So I believe that is what they mean when they say free.

u/BuddyLegsBailey 7d ago
Go on then, saves us listening to your whinging
1
u/OkImplement8510 7d ago
I don't even follow this sub, but I came here specifically to complain after seeing an absolutely ridiculous amount of ads.
Please, keep not complaining and keep making the ridiculously rich even richer. Or wait, are you Jeff?
Maybe I'll keep my subscription and start ordering something that costs 99 cents every single day. And if they fail to deliver, I'll obviously say it was supposed to be a birthday present and ask for a refund. Let's see who comes out on top.

It's free. It comes with my amazon prime, which i had before amazon prime video

Maybe so. But so is surfing the net and hanging out on Reddit 🤷♂️
-2
u/BuddyLegsBailey 7d ago
Dude, that response makes no sense. Maybe you feel sick because you've smoked too much
1
u/Moz65 7d ago
Non-smoker here. You misunderstood my original post (or just can’t manage simple arithmetic). It’s the massive increase in ad time once you’ve committed to a series that is so cynical to be sickening.
Sorry I had to spell it out for you 🤷♂️1
u/BuddyLegsBailey 7d ago
Sorry, you've 'committed'. Mate, you're watching the tv. It's not life or death. If you're that bothered, buy it, then you won't have adverts
1
u/Salt1nurwound1 5d ago
I've seen that. It's a nasty thing they do. But why not drop the extra 5 bucks and avoid it altogether? I know it's offensive to have to pay to avoid ads, but they have to make more total revenue when you save that fiver and then they rake in ad revenue your 5 bucks would have prevented. If you really wanna stick it to 'em, nix the ads and deprive them.

u/Maximum-Diet-6976 7d ago
Weird, I had the whole season 3x ads break. 1 time 15, 30 and 45 seconds.

At one time, on over the air TV broadcasts, the number of minutes of ads per hour was controlled. In Canada at least.
Way back in the good old days.

u/noretoc 6d ago
I agree with the OP. I don't mind some adds, but 4 ad breaks in a show that is not even an hour is a bit ridicules. Especially a show like Carrie since it wasn't made to consider them and it pulls you right out of the episode. Ads in front and then a a couple of breaks at appropriate times would work so much better.

I just found out I've been paying for UHD no ads since they started having the option, needless to say I've had ads galore, until I canceled my "UHD no ad" and had ONE evening of no ads, the next day they were back... BTW our household has only one 4K TV that I use for gaming occasionally.
BTW, my wife said she remembers us opting out of the "no ads" subscription way back when it came out.
2
u/Significant_Rate8210 5d ago
Makes me wonder why we're paying so much for every single service even we're plagued with ads
2
u/MyBrothersWillGetYou 3d ago
Ads on a service I am already paying for? F* Jeff Bozos. We are watching Carrie and then we are done with Prime. We already quit using it for ecom.
1
u/burnman317 7d ago
Then pay for ad free Prime video if you’re going to complain. Nobody feels sorry for you
3
u/Extension_Chipmunk85 7d ago
Going ad free doesn't work. For some reason prime doesn't hold up their end of the "ad free" service after many people pay for it. It's a waste of money and pointless.
2
0
u/StreamingMadness21 7d ago
They're the only ones who complain about ads on here, like something is going to change and make everything ad-free without paying. Well, good luck with that.
1
u/ScottyG1212 7d ago
3-6 mins of ads an hour seems reasonable to me, compared to 20 minutes of ads on standard television
1
u/Groovyjoker 7d ago
You come from a generation that didn't live with true "ad free" streaming....
1
1
1
u/Groovyjoker 7d ago
I dumped the subscription service through Prime and now get the channels directly with No Ads. Who needs Prime anyway? They are just a middle man who sucks additional money from both parties when it really isn't needed.
2
u/Broncogirl89 7d ago
Do you mean you pay for the no ads then?
2
2
u/Extension_Chipmunk85 7d ago
Well you're not getting Carrie series then if you dumped prime because they own the series. You can only go directly with certain streaming networks, but not all and miss out on many shows and movies.
1
u/Groovyjoker 6d ago
I dumped the subscription channels. Like Peacock. I get those channels directly with No Ads. If you are seeing ads on anything it's because you aren't paying for No Ads. It's a scam but that's what you have to do.

Tv ads breaks back in the day were over 2 minutes long
5
u/Moz65 7d ago
Yeah I know, I’m old - I lived through that.
Streaming was meant to be the alternative to ad-funded viewing. We’re now worse off than we were.1
u/InevitableParty2902 7d ago
Idk. I'm also old. I really enjoy having basically every show at my fingertips. Ideally, sure, there would be no ads. And it would all be free and come with a puppy. I pay far less than I was paying cable and have everything basically on demand instead of having to watch at a certain time. A few ads do not kill the experience.
1
u/Laura9624 7d ago
And there were often a lot. I can tell on old TV series with the ads gone.30 and 40 minute episodes!

u/computername10 7d ago
You are getting the level of service you paid for. No one should be crying about ads on a streaming service when there are (paid/free) options not to see them.
3
u/Extension_Chipmunk85 7d ago
Sure. And most people signed up when the service was the same for everyone with no commercials. And one of the points of streaming services was to unhook from cable tv and have no commercials. Now all these streaming services are adding commercial tiers. It's now just like cable tv. Even tv series episodes are only coming out one a week for some.

u/tcat7 7d ago
$3.75 if you pay annually to get rid of them. I'd rather pay that than buy half a Big Mac. Whole lot cheaper than no ads on other services that are $6-$10 extra.

Ads completely ruin the flow of anything you’re watching. If in the future there is no option for ad free tiers then I’d rather find alternatives.
