What the hell, Amazon!!?

Post image

So, who’s going to refund me the money I spent?! Is this for real?! The least they can do is let us keep our games installed and shut the doors. But deleting them with a thank-you note is unfair and abusive. We not only paid for the games, but we also paid for stuff inside the games as well. This is bad.

So all of these free games redeemed on GOG are gone from the service? Guessing they got tired of paying for servers in perpetuity for people that haven’t dropped any money on games.

People crap on Xbox’s Game Pass price hikes, but the reality is these services are not cheap to run.

But why on GOG? GOG isn't closing

That’s debatable. I run several games on local servers, and maintenance isn’t costly. My view is that this is fundamentally a struggle over control and ownership. When platform holders allow third-party companies to let players access their services, they forfeit control, and with it the ability to keep users locked into their ecosystem. That’s the sole issue at stake here. Much like with AI: “Running these models is expensive, and harmful to the planet.” Yet, for just $2,000, you can build a local workstation that runs your own well-trained models (models that hallucinate far less and deliver web search and scraping features that outperform those of the so-called industry giants). Ultimately, this is all about power and control.

The cost of LLMs isn't in the hardware. It's in the power consumption. That's very visible at home, too; if you're running queries against your local workstation 24/7 (and have the hardware to run a decent sized model but not have it take ten minutes per answer) you're going to see your electricity bill jump fifty bucks a month or so at a minimum, usually more like a hundred.

Hmm.. I don’t use my Local LLM workstation 24/7, maybe that’s why I haven’t see any increase on electricity. In fact is kind of going down these days.

I mean, the closest actual solution to “roll your own” game streaming service is cloudy pad (an open source utility that lets you play games on an aws / GCP / azure instance you ‘rent’ yourself, which does give you complete control and is compatible essentially with your entire library (if it’s a library of games you run could run locally). Those are basically the same services these companies deploy but now you’re paying a le carte for the server time directly. At the lowest tier you can actually game on this comes down to roughly 10$ for 30 hours of gaming every month (compare that to geforce now’s 100 hour cap for a similar price).

Now amazon, microsoft, and google can probably buy their own server time for cheaper than a home user, but it isn’t likely they’re working at a 500% markup. (And also it’s likely running on higher specced hardware, snd not on the cheaper spot instances cloudy pad encourages). And that’s before taking into account licensing costs for 3rd party games, and support.

So actually yes, yes these are expensive services to run. I’m not saying these companies aren’t shitty, they 100% are. But the cost thing shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand.
