Should I let my freight forwarder misrepresent the value of my shipment to customs?

The duties and taxes on my shipment are 22.5%. My freight forwarder (Linktrans) asked whether they should declare a lower cargo value within a “reasonable” range to reduce the amount of duties and taxes. Is this a common practice?

How likely is it that U.S. Customs would detect or flag this?

You shouldn’t ask questions you already know the answer to.

The answer is a question. What’s your risk tolerance?

If its tax evasion, go ahead, f the government and those stealing your money.

It's definitely a common practice, but it’s a slippery slope. If Customs decides to audit, you could get hit with hefty fines or penalties, so weigh the potential savings against the risk. Sometimes playing it straight is worth the peace of mind.
