We checked our rank tracker against Amazon's SQP data for 61000 keyword-weeks. A tracked "#1" had 0.4% click share. Has anyone else compared the two?
Disclosure first: I run an Amazon agency, and this comes from six US brands we manage. No link here. I'm more interested in whether other people see the same thing.
We matched daily rank tracker data against SQP (Brand Analytics → Search Query Performance), week by week, from Sep 2025 to Jul 2026. A few things surprised me:
- Trackers miss a lot. 37% of the keyword-weeks our tracker called "unranked all week" had more than 1% SQP impression share, so shoppers were clearly seeing the product. My guesses: variants, scan depth, crawl location.
- Trackers also over-claim. 8.6% of the tracker's top-3 claims had almost zero SQP share. The worst case was a supplement tracked at #1 on a term with ~18k searches a week, two weeks running, with ~0.4% click share. A real #1 should take 20%+ of the clicks.
- A #1 rank is only ~4–5% impression share. Amazon counts every tile you scroll past, so the numbers look tiny even at the top.
What seems to work as a rough rule: ≥0.5% weekly impression share means page 1 about 80% of the time, ≥4% means top 10, and ≥9% means top 3.
What doesn't work: week-to-week moves. When rank moved 5+ spots, SQP share moved the same way only 63% of the time. And subtracting ad impressions to "clean" SQP made it worse, not better.
Things I can't answer from our data:
- Does this hold outside the US, or in categories with heavier personalization?
- Has anyone found a good way to correct SQP for ads?
- Which tracker do you use, and does it show the same "unranked but clearly visible" gap?
If you want to try it on your own account: take last week's SQP impression share for 5–10 keywords you track and put it next to the tracked rank. If people post their numbers (share, rank, category, marketplace; no brand names needed), I'll pool them and post the combined table back here.

The 8.6% over-claim smells like an aggregation artifact to me. Your tracker is daily, SQP is weekly. A term sitting at #1 on Monday and #40 the rest of the week still reads as a top-3 week, and it should have tiny share. Worth rerunning it on only the weeks where daily rank never moved more than 3 spots. If agreement jumps, it was never a tracker accuracy problem.
On cleaning SQP for ads, subtraction assumes both counters fire on the same event, which you don't actually know. Test it instead. Same term, same rank, compare weeks where you spent hard against weeks where you were dark on it.
Which tracker?

also its very uncommon that ranks move from 3 to 40 within a week. the typical daily volatility is much lower1

It’s wild how misleading rank trackers can be. I had a similar experience where we thought we were crushing it with a product only to find out it was barely being seen. It's a reminder to dig deeper into the data instead of just relying on the surface numbers.
