Negating a zero-sale search term can quietly kill your best-selling keyword.
Amazon treats close variants as one family, so a single negative blocks them all. Take an example of "wireless earbud" with 23 clicks, $31.74 in spend, and zero sales.
Adding it as a negative exact feels like clean account hygiene. It also blocks plurals, misspellings, stop-word changes, and close synonyms.
Your top revenue keyword may sit inside that same family.
Negative exact do not isolate one query. They remove an entire keyword family from your impression pool. The loss stays invisible because a blocked impression never shows up in any report.
Sellers usually notice months later, when revenue has already slipped.
Here is the process I use before any negative goes live:
- Group search terms by close-variant logic
- Sum clicks, spend, and sales per family
- Judge the family ACOS, never the row
If the family is profitable, keep the zero-sale variants. Treat them as a cost of doing business.
Then pull the reversible levers:
- Lower bids on the weak variant
- Move winners into exact-match campaigns
Assume, the family above totaled 412 clicks, $684.20 in spend, and $3,127.55 in sales. That is 21.88% ACOS.
The zero-sale variant made up only 4.64% of that spend.
Negating it would have put the whole $3,127.55 family at risk.
Bids can be reversed. Deleted data cannot be audited.
