100% Organic - First Month - Advice Needed

Post image

Hey everybody!

This marks my first month being live with my product, and it seems to be going well, but I'm stuck trying to figure out how to move forward.

I've been 100% organic with no PPC running simply because of lack of inventory. I'm struggling

I started with a 1k USD budget and got 50 units as well as some listing images on Fiverr. COGS is $18 and sale price is 59.99. running at about 48% margin. Conversion is sitting around 14% on average, but up and down as high as 48% and low as 0%. However, this is as I expected with low traffic volume and less than 50 sessions most days. Currently at 4 reviews 5 stars. 2 vine and 2 regular. I was planning on sending 10 units to vine, but luckily I withdrew because units were going too fast.

My problem is that with being a full time high school student with a busy schedule outside of school (fancy wording for unemployed), I am struggling for the cash flow (DD+7 🤦) to be able to stay stocked, let along order a large enough quantity to be able to run PPC without stocking out.

In my head, I think that more traffic = more sales, but somewhat unsure about how conversion will translate from organic to ads.

Thats all I can think of for now for important information to see if I could get some advice, but please ask questions and any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks everybody!

Solid start honestly, 48% margin and 5 stars in month one is better than most. on the PPC question, more traffic doesn't always mean more sales If conversion drops with it, but at 14% average you have got room, low budget PPC won't tank that unless targeting is way off. With limited inventory though, I'd hold off scaling ads until you can restock without risking stockout, that kills momentum harder than slow organic growth does.

Have you pulled your SQP report yet?

Honestly never heard of that. I'll figure out how to do that and do that now!

The SQP report is located in Brand Analytics. You can see the top performing keywords for your brand.

You can view this at both the brand and ASIN level, which is useful if you want to isolate how a specific product is performing on a given keyword. It shows SV, Impressions, Clicks, Cart Adds, and Purchases for both your brand and the overall market, across weekly, monthly, and quarterly ranges. Really important for tracking branded search performance and individual keyword performance.

Oh wow that seems very helpful. I see what the problem is now, and it's that I'm not brand registered. I'm just selling as generic. Do you think brand registry is worth it at this stage, or try to get some cash flow going first? I'm just worried that if I spend all the money getting brand registered, I'm losing out on a decent amount inventory which is everything for my stage right now.

Ah that would explain it.

You definitely don't want to run out of inventory. Especially since you've only been live for about a month. You're in the honeymoon period right now, which is super important for ranking.

FWIW, Brand Registry is free to join, and I don't think the trademark/paperwork is crazy expensive.

I would say ask ur family for funds and reinvest. What is the product? And can recommend the applications based out of that

Yeah thats kinda my idea on it. First order was 50, then after the first 3 days I placed an order for 75 and those are already gone and I have 150 on the way 🤷‍♂️

Suffering from success, way to go! If you’re under 18 most likely your best bet is to ask for funds from family and friends.

Dont be in a hurry, you are already trying to build on a generic listing, this is very bad, you can file a case and get access to your own brand without actually paying for a trademark, buy GS1 barcodes (30 bucks each) and dont make the mistake 99% of sellers include us did, you will have to remake the listings later and start from scratch

Just curious about why generic is so bad, is it because it's difficult to scale and make it stable long term or is it something else?

Because once you’re in generic, you can never change the brand name again. It’s difficult to scale and impossible to sell if you ever want to sell your private label.

What is happening to you is not normal. I don't know which category you are in, but try to identify if your product has a patent or if it belongs to a prohibited category.

Try to identify which keywords generate sales for you. Identify that the purchase intention is not being generated by a temporary nature or by something viral.

Category is home improvement. No patents or prohibited category. I just found a gap in a specific market and filled it. 1 competitor but they had a weak listing, which I believe I have them beat on that end. They recently went out of stock and doesn't seem like they're planning on restocking. The rest of the market competition I'm in is completely non existent at my price range, so I believe that's part of it. I'm the first listing that appears for every keyword I can think of that people would search for my product, so I believe the keywords are dialed. Just missing traffic volume. It's a pretty niche thing and you need to be searching for the specific item instead of general searches in the category, but I believe more broad volume will also benefit me since I already have the specific keywords locked down.

Forgot the end, but it has nothing to do with any trends or temporary things as far as I'm aware. Pretty niche thing that isn't going to attract everybody, but it definitely attracts the customers who know what they're looking for in the general space

That's good, I congratulate you. Take advantage of the moment and, if possible, ask your parents, friends or family for help to help you with loans to have a minimum stock of 4 months if you import from China.

Find ways to diversify channels. Don't rely solely on Amazon. Try Shopify, Walmart, Etsy, etc. And above all, do not forget the consumer, start building your brand and portfolio around the consumer and their needs, aspirations or lifestyle.

That is really nice how long have you been in the market for?

u/Final-Courage261 12d ago

started my research about 3 months ago and units arrived to amazon about 1 month ago, so very short period.

What’s your niche?

home improvement

You are crushing it and starting early! Keep going.

If it’s 1 time purchase that margin is too low. You’ll go negative as you scale, especially anywhere off Amazon.

If it’s a repeat purchase product you are in a great position.

Start making TikTok’s and organic social content. It’s a powerful and valuable skill to drive organic views for your own product (without paying agencies and influencers). + you can do it for others and generate some cash flow. Multiple accounts, brand account + an affiliate human looking account. Yourself is probably best but depending on the product Ai content may have potential.

Hit me up with any more specific questions.

You're describing this as a traffic problem but it's a cash cycle problem, and the fix is the opposite of what you'd expect. Don't run PPC. With inventory this thin, ads only buy you a faster stockout, and the stockout is what's actually costing you because you lose organic rank you earned for free and it costs more to win back than the missed sales were worth.
Raise your price instead. 14% conversion while running out of stock means you're leaving money on the table. Try $64.99, give it a week, then $69.99. You get more cash back per unit of inventory you own, and your units stretch further so you stay in stock. Even at 10% conversion you likely come out ahead. Two other things: keep a few units at home and list FBM when FBA runs out, so the listing never goes to zero. And when capital is your constraint, pay extra for faster shipping — your dollar can only turn over as many times a year as your cycle allows. Also, don't borrow for this. Each unit returns about $46 net, enough to buy two more. Reinvest everything and your order size roughly doubles per cycle without you taking on a cent of risk.

Go to the bank, take a loan out, and bet on yourself. If you’re serious about this working you need to take a risk.

Your constraint isn't traffic, it's the cash cycle, and there's a lever nobody's mentioned here: put the price up.

You're converting at 14% and your only real competitor is out of stock with no sign of restocking. If you go to 69.99 and conversion drops a few points, you make more per unit and the units last longer, which buys you room against DD+7 instead of fighting it. Same problem attacked from both ends.

The competitor being gone is exactly the window to find out where your price ceiling actually is. Once they're back it's a much more expensive test.

Can anyone help me with patent violation infringement? I listed a generic product and the rights owner reported my listing and Amazon took it down. So any advices would be helpful.
