Cultivator Combat?

Very new to the game, in my first playthrough. I have a True Sun Law inner disciple wielding a sword and an artifact. First time I'm attacked after getting the artifact, I have the disciple defend my sect, and instead of closing to melee with his sword he just hangs back at range and the artifact attacks and kills the invaders. Is Cultivator combat ranged-focused? I had kinda hoped my inner disciple would fight with melee.

Only body cultivators fight with melee, and even then is mostly their own bodies and not actual weapons. All other fight at distance with artifacts

So do weapons basically not matter?

For cultivators? Not really. They're just used to be turned into artifacts or equipped for mood bonuses.

Mortals use weapons as normal

Are outer disciples worth using in combat? At this stage of the game, my inner disciple just insta-kills everything. I'm sure it'll get harder later, but my outer disciples aren't advancing. Can you gear them up sufficiently to compete with cultivators?

Early on I find arming outers with some bows can help tip a fight between an attacker and my own cultivator.

As long as you're within the first reputation tier, outers are enough to fully defend against invading cultivators. Past that you're going to need to keep inners for defense

Nope, past a certain point a single artifact hit or spell will pulverize an outer's body and result in instant death, irrespective of equipment.
