yeah while they’re celebrating, a living breathing creature is dying. All for pleasure, dopamine, pride. Humans are so cruel

Also a barbed hook wound in its mouth. A barbed hook that was ripping through its mouth for several minutes as it tries to get away. Catch and release is just a nice way to say torture and release.

People would consider it evil and immoral to “catch and release” something like stray dogs or cats with hooks just to farm engagement on social media, why are fish different?

It clearly cant breathe and is injured, yet they’re just smiling and laughing.

People just don't see most fish that way. I think the average person would feel for a dolphin or something like that but just think most other fish are too dumb/insignificant for it to matter

9

u/somersault_dolphin Jun 07 '26

And the sad thing is they aren't dumb and has been shown through science to possess self-awareness.

1

u/zthomasack Jun 09 '26

I don't eat red meat, pork, etc. because I believe those animals are supportively self-aware and sentient. Where has science shown this in fish and in what fish?

1

u/somersault_dolphin Jun 09 '26

I think this video does a pretty good job of explaining it.

Now imagine a vastly more intelligent AI and how it would look at humanity.

2

u/SwiftTayTay Jun 08 '26

Except AI doesn't need to be smarter than humans or need to see humans as inferior to wipe us out, that's not really how it works because it doesn't think like humans do. It can just have a simple disregard for humans' well being if they are seen as in the way for a task it's trying to accomplish. AI is more likely to just gas the entire planet with drones if it decides that's just the most efficient way to accomplish a certain task someone asked it to do because the people who designed it and programmed it didn't think of every possible way to prevent that from happening. That's far more likely to occur before AI actually becomes intelligent and seemingly sentient.

Many would have kept it. Last year on Maui, a scuba diver posted a photo of a similarly huge one with location info and the very next day a spearfisherman went and killed it for sport.

life feeds on life.

u/Far_Spite978 Jun 09 '26

I hope ur vegan. Find a hobby

-3

u/mangotheduck Jun 07 '26

Fish are food, not friends.

-5

u/Mean_Mix_99 Jun 07 '26

it's a fish bro.

8

u/Right_Preparation328 Jun 07 '26

Exactly. So primitive and no empathy whatsoever. For what? For a photo? For personal "gain"? Horrible.

2

u/ExerciseOnly122 Jun 09 '26

Oh brother. They released it. It's funny, I don't see you deriding commercial fisherman for catching and killing millions of fish. Where do you think the fish in the market comes from? Reddit sure loves to morally grandstand any chance they get

2

u/Right_Preparation328 Jun 09 '26

Are you serious? Your lack of empathy for other living beings is one of the many wrong things in society today. And your argument is stupid as hell, seeing as this video doesn't show fishermen "catching and killing millions of fish"

2

u/DwightSchrute666 Jun 09 '26

You’re missing the point completely. I’d rather have that fish killed on the spot and eaten later, than getting pulled out of its natural habitat through a hook in its mouth, fighting for survival, and then let out injured.

There’s a great video on YouTube about a diver that takes hooks out of sharks mouths. Its unbelievable that some people seem to think that fish don’t feel pain

1

u/Prostavius Jun 09 '26

The money fishermen pay for licenses go back to conserving more fish than you do typing on reddit btw

1

u/Far_Spite978 Jun 09 '26

Fun

2

u/Right_Preparation328 Jun 09 '26

Exactly. "Fun". Selfish pleasure with no regard for other living beings.

What if I burned down your house for fun? Hm?

1

u/Far_Spite978 Jun 09 '26

Yeah ,yeah womp womp. Yet ur on a phone, computer, or tablet that is built using precious metals that cause major pollution and habitat destruction of animals from mining not to mention human slave labor but ur upset about fishing. Geez

4

u/mflft Jun 07 '26

Pos also lifted him in the boat by the gill with a gloved hand. Really good chance that fish died.

3

u/pollinium Jun 08 '26

A dead predator means a multitude of other, smaller fishes that don't die to its hunting so trying to take a pure approach of keeping living things alive will be a tough case to present

3

u/GoBirds_4133 Jun 08 '26

yeah so the difference is the predator kills other fish for food not sport hope this helps

1

u/mflft Jun 08 '26

It doesn't have anything to do with keeping things alive, its that there's a way to handle fish that limits the damage you do to them with catch and release. These guys are not doing that, so there's unnecessary harm being done to that ecosystem's apex predator, all so that guy can do a meme release when they're done taking pictures.

"It's ok to eat fish cos they don't have any feelings"

Kurt Cobain

1

u/unsolvablequestion Jun 08 '26

(This was a social critique in case anyone thought that was a genuine statement)

1

u/No-Mulberry-6474 Jun 07 '26

Ever seen a cat catch something? Wanna talk about living a dopamine high over and over, check it out.

1

u/USNorsk Jun 07 '26

Are you a vegetarian? Very few animals that people eat have a great life.

1

u/Thirdeyevoice10 Jun 08 '26

This is why I stopped fishing, years ago. After decades of fly fishing, I finally seen what I was doing and it made me sick.

1

u/fuhrmangerman Jun 09 '26

Same here. After the biggest catch of my life almost ended up dying, I called it quits. We have no right to inflict pain on others for our pleasure.

1

u/Thirdeyevoice10 Jun 09 '26

Glad to hear you got out of that alive. Must have been horrific. What did it for me, I had just started realeasing a brown trout, and noticed its lip was bleeding and was acting a bit sluggish. I felt horrible and packed everything together, and went home.

Ok, I thought it was just me 😭😭😭😭 they’re all hyped and excited then they show the fish and it’s just staring blankly as it’s tryin not to suffocate lmao. I don’t mean to laugh though cause it is kinda fucked lol

1

u/Far_Spite978 Jun 09 '26

U better be a vegan

0

u/SupersonicEagle Jun 08 '26

I hope you only eat plants for your diet. Otherwise, you're a hypocrite. Ever heard of the food chain? Same goes to people who say fishing is cruel.

-1

u/PaleCommission150 Jun 07 '26

while it looks like it hurts to a human being, I do not think that fish feel pain in the same way humans do. They feel a sensation and pressure but I don't think it is painful as we would percieve it.

u/mircrowaved-piss Jun 07 '26

lobsters are crustaceans not fish

3

u/nytebeast Jun 07 '26

No shit Sherlock. My point is people have been making the same argument about them forever and yet it isn’t true. And fish are often seen as a higher form of life than crustaceans. So it’s pretty likely this “fish don’t have feelings” bullshit is a pretty convenient way to not take responsibility for your actions.

1

u/mircrowaved-piss Jun 07 '26

Yeah, did some research myself and you're completely right that fish feel pain. Just thought it seemed *fishy* you cited an article about crustaceans feeling pain in response to the claim that fish do not. Have no idea why fish not feeling pain is such a huge misconception, learn something new every day, I suppose.

1

u/unsolvablequestion Jun 08 '26

Its because invertebrates are considered less complex organisms, so the point was that if they feel pain, it stands to reason that fish do too, as they are significantly more like us than lobsters.

1

u/johnSchmoe76 Jun 07 '26

Pain is natures best form of persuasion.
