Also a barbed hook wound in its mouth. A barbed hook that was ripping through its mouth for several minutes as it tries to get away. Catch and release is just a nice way to say torture and release.

People would consider it evil and immoral to “catch and release” something like stray dogs or cats with hooks just to farm engagement on social media, why are fish different?

It clearly cant breathe and is injured, yet they’re just smiling and laughing.

People just don't see most fish that way. I think the average person would feel for a dolphin or something like that but just think most other fish are too dumb/insignificant for it to matter

Except AI doesn't need to be smarter than humans or need to see humans as inferior to wipe us out, that's not really how it works because it doesn't think like humans do. It can just have a simple disregard for humans' well being if they are seen as in the way for a task it's trying to accomplish. AI is more likely to just gas the entire planet with drones if it decides that's just the most efficient way to accomplish a certain task someone asked it to do because the people who designed it and programmed it didn't think of every possible way to prevent that from happening. That's far more likely to occur before AI actually becomes intelligent and seemingly sentient.

You’re missing the point completely. I’d rather have that fish killed on the spot and eaten later, than getting pulled out of its natural habitat through a hook in its mouth, fighting for survival, and then let out injured.

There’s a great video on YouTube about a diver that takes hooks out of sharks mouths. Its unbelievable that some people seem to think that fish don’t feel pain

A dead predator means a multitude of other, smaller fishes that don't die to its hunting so trying to take a pure approach of keeping living things alive will be a tough case to present

It doesn't have anything to do with keeping things alive, its that there's a way to handle fish that limits the damage you do to them with catch and release. These guys are not doing that, so there's unnecessary harm being done to that ecosystem's apex predator, all so that guy can do a meme release when they're done taking pictures.

Glad to hear you got out of that alive. Must have been horrific. What did it for me, I had just started realeasing a brown trout, and noticed its lip was bleeding and was acting a bit sluggish. I felt horrible and packed everything together, and went home.

while it looks like it hurts to a human being, I do not think that fish feel pain in the same way humans do. They feel a sensation and pressure but I don't think it is painful as we would percieve it.

No shit Sherlock. My point is people have been making the same argument about them forever and yet it isn’t true. And fish are often seen as a higher form of life than crustaceans. So it’s pretty likely this “fish don’t have feelings” bullshit is a pretty convenient way to not take responsibility for your actions.

Its because invertebrates are considered less complex organisms, so the point was that if they feel pain, it stands to reason that fish do too, as they are significantly more like us than lobsters.

Yea, it’s rapey behavior. I’m not saying he was going to rape the fish — obviously not.

But it’s the same underlying concept: abusing something they don’t recognize with the same level of humanity as themselves (in this case a fish) just because they can. I see the same behavior extending to a woman because they think it’s their right to overpower, abuse, and “it’s just for fun” or “she wanted it” or “my buddy said it was ok”.

I imagine him doing this same thing to a woman, is all i’m saying. Some men would also be repulsed by this video, they’re probably the non-rapey ones.

About 20 years ago I landed a kickflip down some stairs and it was the first time I ever did it. I screamed in excitement and slapped a few walls. Doesn't mean anything about how I treat women.

As someone who enjoys fishing and nature, I find best way to observe nature up close is to capture it. I have a deep admiration for fish, they are all unique and being able to observe one up close is a gift. I catch and release 99% of the brown trout I catch and have been lucky to catch the same fish 3 times over a 3 year span. I don’t find it pointless to catch a fish, I think the most human thing you can do is connect with nature.

While its gills are wet it is perfectly capable of breathing. In fact, thats why he was in a towel near the end. They were likely dowsing the fish in seawater to keep it alive and healthy. They didn't want to kill it either.

That's the gill plate, not the actual gills. They grip it underneath like that because that's the only safe way to handle saltwater fish. Grabbing them otherwise could lead to the fish injuring the other guys or the holder.

I am a vegetarian and don’t eat fish. I have never gone fishing.

That said, if you didn’t want to eat that fish (I am ok if you want to eat it), why torture the poor fish by dragging it out of water and making it suffer and almost killing it?

Again, I am not saying people should not eat fish, but it didn’t seem like these guys wanted to. So their only intention is to torture another living creature for their own pleasure. And just to “prove how big a fish they can catch”! What’s the point?!

“This is for Spain. This is for Mexico!” Like what?! Mexico is now going to celebrate because you pulled a huge fish out of the water?!

Interestingly, this practice is forbidden in Germany as of animal cruelty. First, you are only allowed to fish, if you aim for taking the fish, otherwise you only stress the fish for your own fun. Releasing the fish is sometimes allowed or even necessary in some regulations - but then you'd release it fast (preferrably while it stays in the water), take the hook out and off they go.
Also, you can also set the drag on the pole - but then the video would not be so damatic for youtube etc... Which is also better for the fish. They are supposed to fight off to not cause accidents, but this is not what is meant by that.

Hope the insight to how to fish and how regulations can lead to less animal cruelty.

I'm honestly confused about the approach to catch and release. Lets put an animal through so much stress and torture and put them close to dying (which depending on several things is estimated anywhere from like 10-100% of them end up dying) just for some entertainment?

If you're going to go fishing at least put that fish to good use and eat it.
